Safety: Parts of SJO seem rundown and sketchy. Nothing terrible happened to me, and I generally felt safe in high-traffic areas. However, as I was leaving the city by bus, I saw two dishevelled-looking men dumping out a purse as if they'd stolen it. Everyone should keep an eye on their belongings while in the city. Cost: Like all of CR, SJO isn't what I'd consider "cheap". I was able to find cheap (albeit shitty) lodging and noted that the grocery stores had more variety and lower prices than in Jacรณ and Quepos. Activities: I'm cheap and tend to do free activities. Luckily, the city did have some free hiking areas, museums, parks with running tracks, workout equipment, basketball courts, etc. You could also spend hours in the central market eating, shopping, and puttering around. Transit: Pretty efficient overall. There are multiple buses to and from the city all day and night. The inner-city buses, in particular, are cheap and (mostly) on time. Internet: Fast and reliable in most places. I only experienced one power outage (lasting 1 hour) in 3 weeks. |

Overwhelmingly popular surf town with dirt roads and WAY TOO many people on them. I car-camped with my dog by the beach. Nobody bothered us. Overall a chill place just way too busy. |

Dog sitting for an American family in Herradura in a gated community. Jacรณ itself isn't pretty but has great waves and some of the more local neighbourhoods have a distinct Tico charm. Driving here is a nightmare - you need 4WD and there's one main road that everybody's on. It's honestly best to bike or have a motorcycle here. Internet is pretty good but the power goes out about once a week. |

Pura vida! I love this area. Lush jungle, excellent surf, environmentally minded, and animals everywhere. Costs are better outside of Manual Antonio. I'm DYING to go back. |

Lots of retired Gringos complaining about Panama but living there full-time for a lower cost-of-living. Lots of rain and cool nights - welcome after days of heat and humidity. Beautiful mountains, but you hear Centro for miles away. No sidewalks outside of Centro. |

Went to an all-inclusive resort for my mom's 70th (The Royal Decameron). It was alright. Very humid during rainy season. Pretty good beach weather considering. |

Stayed with family living in the Berlin's wealthy Zealand neighbourhood. It was swanky, peaceful, and safe. It took me about 30 minutes to get to the city centre. Good internet, good food, good transit. 10/10 would go again. |

Did a work exchange for a small business based in Tsvilde Hegn. It was magical. I was tasked with building an app for a nature-connectedness business. In exchange, I received a rustic cottage nestled in the woods. Internet was OK, the food was great albeit expensive. I love Denmark's bike infrastructure, and was overall happy, but didn't make many friends or acquaintances in the two months I lived there. |
