How do you communicate with locals when ordering food?

by @nene 8yr  | 6 comments

Hello everyone,
I spent quite a few months in Asia last year, especially China. I am a foodie so I always want to try small local restaurants. Unfortunately the language barrier made it difficult/impossible quite often, especially when asking for ingredients (I am good with body language and gestures but not everyone and every culture engage).
So, I was wondering: how to do communicate in restaurants when no one speaks English?

Thanks!

  1. Point your finger onto the desired food
  2. Point your index finger up, optionally saying โ€œoneโ€. Here it gets tricky if you want to go for a custom quantity.
  3. Hand over the money
  4. Get your food

Another option is to learn the basics of the local language and youโ€™ll be incredibly rewarded. Some of the best food I had was by accidentally discovering an amazing hole in the wall spot, where sometimes they donโ€™t even have menus to point at.

I usually point or gesture.

Learning โ€œwhat do you recommend?โ€ in the local language is good.

And, seriously, itโ€™s just food. Unless you wind up at some super fancy, high priced place or have food allergies, itโ€™s not really a big deal.

We always carry this little book with pictures to point at. It has all the animals, vegetables, fruits etc. Weโ€™ve never used it though.

Thanks Iena. I was looking at something similarโ€ฆ but you said you never used it? So, how did you manage so far?

We actually never had a situation where we could not explain with hand and feet what weโ€™d like. But itโ€™s good to have it as a backup. For peace of mind.

Thatโ€™s one of the awkward (but also funny) things we digital nomads have to go thru

I tend to:
-ask first if the person attending me speaks English (they might call someone else who does speaks English or that understands a little)
-point at food pictures or point to the actual food (on street food etc)
-do hand gestures asking for the menu  :raised_hands:

When communication seems impossible I just give up and find another place to eat. If youโ€™re staying somewhere for long-term it might be useful to learn the basics of the local language.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Digital work in return for lodgings and food?

by @tuesdaygroup 9yr 9 years ago  | 18 comments

Hi Everyone,

Iโ€™m myself a digital nomad. So this is a nomad 2 nomad question

It seems to be a popular trend for people to live and work on local farms in returns for daily meals and lodgings. (Southern Portugal)

Typically for 1-3 months periods

My Question
Iโ€™m just purely throwing out an idea here. But would any digital nomads be interested in a similar deal ?. Digital work in return for lodgings and food??

Im interested to hear peoples feelings on this one, be it good or bad! I understand this wouldnt be for everyone but a might be appealing to others?

Thanks for reading my question. If any nomads are interested right off the bat feel free to drop me a PM for further details.
