Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 7yr  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

A very good strategies summary about ovoiding jetlag/flight related stresses: https://twitter.com/flowen_nl/status/1068760499733651456?s=19

The fasting advice (backed by research) was an awesome find which Iโ€™ll try applying during next flight.

Iโ€™ve flown from South Africa (+2 gmt) to Asia (+9 gmt) and back probably about 10 timesโ€ฆ I cannot sleep on planes at all. My flights in Asia tend to arrive at around 5pm their timeโ€ฆ First night Iโ€™d usually fall asleep quite late (although Iโ€™m in bed at like 9pm) due to the jet lag, but I force myself to wake up at like 6am, have a strong cup of coffee and go through the day without sleeping at all. Usually at 9pm Iโ€™m dead and will pass out. Next morning I wake up early again.

Coffee in the morning is ok. But to stay awake, never.

To be a little clearer, if you can arrive at about 7pm at night and by the time you arrive in your hotel room you can go right to sleep at 9, that is the absolute best. When I say day flight, I mean you fly during the day not arrive during the day.

I canโ€™t sleep on planes so I avoid the red eye if at all possible. I am even in Business Class most of the time and I still canโ€™t sleep.

I travel a lot for work. I find that if I focus on arriving in the morning and I power through the first day till about 9pm and crash, I get over jetlag pretty easily.

Also, donโ€™t drink alcohol on the plane, stick to water and try not drinking for the first few days you are there.

That helps me.

I do around 200k miles per year.

This is what keeps me from terrible jetlag.

  1. Change clocks to destination as soon as plane takes off.
  2. Do not sleep until roughly about 10 hours before you are to land. About 1.5hrs until landing you will get your last meal / be woken so keep that in mind.
  3. I use Temazepam on the crazy sectors when needing sleep.
  4. Hydration is key. Avoid any alcohol or coffee and I also have a supply of hydralyte in my carry on.
  5. On landing adapt to the time zone, if itโ€™s daytime you are awake for the day (or as long as humanly possible) and if itโ€™s nighttime you should be super tired and not have slept on the flight so you can jump straight into bed.

@mhclapperton I messed up by having coffee and I wish we would have got more electrolytes for the flight and first few days.

Great tips - thanks for this! Will keep in mind for the next stint through time :airplane:

@mmorris 7yr

We have been traveling for a while and jet lag effects us pretty minimally at this point. I do think that it depends on the person somewhat, and your overall health definitely plays a major role, but here are some tips I can provide from experience:

  1. Once your travel day starts, you are on destination time. If it is the day at your destination, resist the urge to sleep as much as possible. Try and sleep when it is night at your destination, and when you arrive, do not sleep until it is night time. It is much better to be tired when you are traveling vs. tired for the few days after you arrive.

  2. As @ifdattic said, Melatonin is your friend. I do not recommend pharmaceuticals, but thatโ€™s just me. Take it before you go to bed after you have arrived to reset your sleep rhythm. Do not take it during travel.

  3. Drink lots of water, get up and move regularly, avoid any caffeine/uppers.

I definitely made some mistakes along with the already ridiculous flight/travel plans we had.

Recently was dealing with jet lag for the first time, it just sucks. I think there is some articles online suggesting some things to get over it faster, but as far as I remember itโ€™s just basic stuff and probably wonโ€™t help that much (like drink water, etc). I think itโ€™s just something you have to suck up and wait it over.

One thing that could help is Melatonin (sleeping pills could probably also work but they donโ€™t work on me, I would rather use something natural) to put yourself to sleep closer to your schedule in the new timezone. There is also book โ€œPower of whenโ€ which I think gives some suggestions on how to make let lag easier to deal with, you might want to check it out.

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 5yr 5 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 5yr 5 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

How do I ensure that getting refused entry to the UK won't keep me from getting an Australian 462 (work and holiday) visa?

in Australia by @allisonkirschbaum 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

On New Yearโ€™s Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.

I havenโ€™t had any entry issues to any of the several countries Iโ€™ve visited after, but now Iโ€™m applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry wonโ€™t keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as Iโ€™ve never traveled there before, donโ€™t know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?

Many thanks in advance!

Getting started: where to?

by @vforvalerio87 6yr 6 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everybody!

I just joined this community because Iโ€™m currently in a place in life where I can live the digital nomad lifestyle and I feel like I would really be missing out if I didnโ€™t catch this opportunity. I work fully remotely, no fixed hours, I currently live in northern Italy and I basically have no partner or kids.

So, the question isโ€ฆ where to? I would love to hear the advice of more experienced digital nomads!
Laptop and internet is enough for me to work but I need decent internet for conferencing and I really have to put in the hours: some days are more relaxed, others Iโ€™ll have to work all day and night.
I enjoy more temperate climates, so no torrid heat or unbearable humidity, if possible.
I like decent food but Iโ€™m very adaptable in terms of tastes: anything is fine as long as quality is good and sanitary conditions are acceptable.
I absolutely do not enjoy the club life and would just rather go hiking during the weekends and pubs (or breweries) during the evenings. Iโ€™m a social person though and I donโ€™t particularly enjoy places where people are too introverted (been in Seattle for four monthsโ€ฆ the freeze is real); I really look forward to making friends or acquaintances wherever I end up.
I enjoy decent transportation so places where thereโ€™s a viable metro system or Uber actually works would be nice.
I prefer places with a bit more of history and culture (this is one of the reasons why I absolutely loved Portugal, for example).
Iโ€™d like to spend under $3k average per month for rent, food and going out.

For now I was thinking either:

  • Staying close to home for a first experience, so something like Vienna or Berlin
  • South East Asia; Iโ€™ve been to Hong Kong a few times before, now I was thinking either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi, or possibly Thailand
  • South America, especially Colombia. I also have some people I know in Bogota and in Medellin, which I think would be a plus

When? Ideally I would leave anywhere from mid to late March and stay away for 2 or 3 months.

Sorry for the long read, I hope to get some input. Thank you for your time, if we ever meet in person I owe you a beer (or whatever youโ€™d prefer).

Getting a Russian Visa while traveling

in Russia by @shaulsolomon 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

I am an English/American currently in Israel, and heading in a week to Georgia/Armenia for two weeks and then want to head to Russia for a week.
As I am only in Israel for another week, would it be possible to apply for the visa in Israel and ask to receive it in Armenia (my last stop before I want to go to Russia)?
Or perhaps there is another better option that I have available?

Living in Dubai for a month. Tips?

Heya!
I have to be in Dubai by end of the month to finish the formation of my company and residency etc. Iโ€™ve stayed at hotels earlier, but that sounds pretty impractical considering I will be living there nearly for a month.

Anyone got any tips about renting a short-stay apartment for a month? Maybe even a few leads?

What about living in Dubai? I will be working hard, but I donโ€™t want to be bored out of my mind. Places I can hang out, things I can do?

Please share

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

in Sihanoukville , Cambodia by @keybrownhill 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!
