I recently started โbanjaraaโ which is the Hindi word for โnomadโ. The idea is to build up the non-profit sector in and outside the country and connect it actively to support each other. We have a lot of pressing challenges in the southeast Asian region and hence the need to evolve is immediate.
I have worked with big as well as grassroot Non-profits in India and worked directly with communities in different parts of India. The idea emerged when I found a lot of need in terms of professionals and educated people working with the smallest Non-profits without demanding a high salary, since they cannot afford it. So I work with a basic stipend (which can also be paid in EMI is required), basic stay and food, in the smallest grassroots Non-profit in the remote parts of the country.
Through โbanjaraaโ I am trying to set the ground high for Non-profits and move them towards social entrepreneurship model slowly. I would be interested to answer your queries etc.
Interesting to see Enspiral mentioned in this threadโฆ I just happened to be reading/ watching this video yesterday which some may find interesting โ a talk at the Harvard Berkman Ctr for Internet and Society.

At around 28:00 in the video he talks about neo-nomadism as one of the features of a society that is trying to transition to a more equitable way of creating and sharing value. Apparently there are around 30 nomads from Mozilla in Chiang Maiโฆ

I have been getting in touch a lot about it and i think terms like @simon_lawrence 's mention about CC are not just an empty hull any more. Did anyone read Yunusโ publications about Social Capitalism? Itโs super cool. Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank, which introduced Microloans to India. Microloans had such a success in mainstream consciousness because they see payback rates near 100% (traditional bank loans see max. 70%, which is why interest rates are so high). The baseline idea of Social Capitalism is essentially that you can leverage systemic traits of capitalism to help less favoured people. In one instance, Yunus actually achieved vast accessibility to mobile phones across India just by turning the business model into a more communal one (hereโs a paper from worldbank about the Village Phone case).
Inspired by these ideas, I started Kaosempire and right now itโs just me. But the idea is to grow it into a network of professionals that want to solve companiesโ strategic challenges by turning them more authentic & sustainable. In that context, I even wrote (and published) a scientific framework for a brand audit to assess a companyโs status quo in terms of sustainability-- With the framework, itโs easier to build a brand strategy into the right direction. Maybe anyone of you is interested to become part of the network? Or has ideas how to spin it further? Or wants to create something cool? All remote?
I work with social entrepreneurs and nonprofits as much as I can. Am always open to meeting them and hearing ideas. Always have a few in the back of my mind too. If anyone is in Europe atm, let me know.
Thanks for this thread, Iโve been really torn about starting my own business and making money after the traveling Iโve done and really question capitalism. Conscious Capitalism is another term Iโve come across. This thread has given me some good guidance and way to explain my thinkingโฆ
Maybe you should fly to NZ and hang with Enspiral, or Toronto and hang at the Center for Social Innovation for a bit. The experience may have some answers for you.
In my mind a social enterprise values the outcomes over the profit. I think thatโs a great thing to aspire to, for your job to be about people rather than just feeding the capitalist machine.
Iโm in a variant of the dilemma that @raphaelszmir mentions. My goal is to be fully nomadic with a bicycle, but I just canโt see how I can make that work without having some semi-regular well paying work. I come from a web background and am moving into accessibility auditing. It has good outcomes for all web users, but also fairly good financial outcomes for the auditor/consultant.
But when I think about the money side of it it just makes me feel dirty and compromised, both for the money side of things and the reliance on capitalist infrastructure.
@Raphael_B - yup exactly what I said. Look under the Modern Definition section:
"Thus far, there has been no consensus on the definition of social entrepreneurship, as so many different sorts of fields and disciplines are associated with social entrepreneurship. "
In my books Space X and maybe Tesla Motors fit into the basket of social enterprise, but again, itโs so fluffy that just about every Silicon Valley type startup these days can sort of fit with the common โmake the world a better placeโ mantra.
I think one of the pivotal tests comes when we see an organisation visibly forsake profit in order to further their mission.
Indeed as @dangermouse117 explained, most people are ethically minded. However they do what they do because it enables them to work and travel. If that means you have to sell something you donโt believe in 100%, or offer freelance services to a random organisation, many would still do it. Itโs very rare that you manage to find people who are very very strong about the cause they work for.

Most digital nomads Iโve met on the circuit are ethically minded, but I canโt say Iโve met many social entrepreneurs, whatever that means.
You can say I am one, but Iโve yet to figure out what the term means, as itโs a pretty loose catch all phrase for something that doesnโt fit in the non-profit, nor the for profit baskets.

There are many social entrepreneurial organisations out there, and many of them have embraced remote work as a way of attracting talent in lieu of money (like me!). Taiwan, New Zealand, and Berlin are three places that hold social entrepreneurial hubs, but there are many more.
Look into Enspiral (NZ), DCent (er, Europe?), the Robin Hood Co-op (London), OuiShare (France), g0v (Taiwan). There are many more.

I would also love to find out if there are many social entrepreneurs in this world. Iโm looking to move in that direction.
Not to be pedantic since I think the point of this thread is to connect with other people interested in affecting positive change while making a living, but the central idea of social entrepreneurship - as I understand it - is that you donโt have to choose between profit and benefit to society; itโs possible to have a profitable business that also empowers disenfranchised communities. Social entrepreneurship is actually generally contrasted with non-profits.

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.
I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.
My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?
I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.
If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.
Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?
I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. My interest in DN lifestyle started when half of our company have been taking 1 month for remote work @ Ko Samui. It was truly cool but we observed quite some communication challenges. Communication seemed just โriskierโ when online.
What were your worst situations caused by misunderstanding while communicating online with your teammates? What do you do to avoid misunderstandings?
Iโm a big believer in co-living but Iโm finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.
As far as I know of, Canadians donโt pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.
But Iโd like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.
Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โtermination for excessive international roamingโ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโs) as follows:

Canโt work in normal cafรฉ because having clientโs laptop for security reasons, canโt use open networks. Working for R&D. Also laptop is so huge it doesnโt fit normal cafe environment because itโs far from discreet.
