Are there any marketing nomads here?

by @neutron 11yr  | 12 comments

Just interested. A lot of the remote jobs seem to be for developers, so can understand that it would be development heavy. Would be interested to find out if there are any marketer nomads, and what they do to find work etc

Looks like Iโ€™m about 10 days late to the party, but I read the topic and thought it was an interesting thread.

Iโ€™m also a marketing guy, doing digital strategy for companies, but mostly I specialize in paid search. I have a mix of local clients from when I was in living in San Diego and referrals. Right now all the clients are US based, but Iโ€™m trying to change that. For me specifically, because itโ€™s paid search and at any second they could call and have some โ€œemergencyโ€ I try to work hours close to US east or west coast depending where I am traveling. So that seems to be the biggest downside so far. (If I was smart like these guys I would be in the same timezone enjoying the beach in Mexico)

Completely agree with the strategy @Miles mentioned.

Personally I get all of my work from referrals / word of mouth. I was trying on Elance to diversify a little and found the same problems mentioned above, unrealistically low wages / competition from a unskilled โ€œexpertsโ€.

Iโ€™m exactly on the same situation as yours. Iโ€™m a Digital Marketing Specialist looking for remote jobs but most companies are looking for marketers who accept U$200 per month for a full time job.

I suggest you to check out odesk.com. There are heaps of marketing jobs over there but there are also lots of people applying for it. Itโ€™s not easy but Iโ€™m sure you can find something.

@Chase_Buckner, Mexico sounds good. Iโ€™m may be heading to there in October for a surf trip. It would be good to meet up with you and check out your coworking space. Are you near Puerto?

Hey @vellosothiago! Sayulita is about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. You can easily grab a bus from the airport that will drop you at the edge of town. Let me know if you come up and Iโ€™ll pick you up where the bus drops you!

Where do you live now? Give me a shout on skype sometime. Love to chat more about what youโ€™re up to: chase.buckner99

@Chase_Buckner I am surprised we never metโ€ฆ My wife and I lived in the north end of Sayulita for most of last year and I believe I met your partner with Sayulita Office at The Public Houseโ€ฆ Also became good friends with John C. who is based out of the Office.

Hey @Miles ! Sorry our paths didnโ€™t cross before you left. I think youโ€™re referring to Dan & Brad of Sayulita Wifi though, who originally set up the office space. I took the office over in June so they could focus on getting more homes set up with Sayulita Wifi. The office has since been renamed Sayulita CoWork and weโ€™ve been making some changes here and there to make it more of a true co-work environment.

John C. is still here and doing well. Do you guys have any plans to come back?

Hi guys, Iโ€™m a marketer (VP of Ops for a digital agency called CustomerBloom) based in Sayulita, Mexico. Our company is technically based in New Jersey (USA), but several of our team members are remote. Weโ€™re currently about 20 people in staff and are always looking for talented people - especially those who live abroad in countries with a lower cost of living than the US.

We also have an offshoot of our agency called AgencyBloom that white-labels our services to other marketers who may not cover the full-spectrum of services.

As a side business, I have a coworking space here in Sayulita called Sayulita CoWork, where we have a 60mb up/down of fiber internet, so itโ€™s pretty ideal for those who want to surf in Mexico but still work. If youโ€™re ever thinking of checking out Mexico, definitely give me a shout!

Iโ€™m curious as to whether I could be helpful to Marketing Agencies such as the one you work for, as a freelance animator most of my work is direct to client or through production companies.
Iโ€™m keen to start working more with full service marketing agencies to expand your offering to clients, do you already work with motion designers or do your clients ever ask for explainers, animated Instagram or promo videos?

Let me know if thatโ€™s something youโ€™re interested in, if not, Iโ€™ll definitely give you a shout when I head to Mexico for a surf!

@miles 11yr

I have been a full time from wherever marketer for over 5 years now and gave up on a rental house a couple years ago and have been full time traveling with my wife, since.

I have a team of developers on oDesk who do odd jobs for me when people ask for help, or when it gets a bit too technical for me, but I do most of the wordpress work / leadpages work for our funnels.

Our top priority are our funnels because they are our assetsโ€ฆ Most of the income comes from sales of our info-products, apps (our content, team in India develops these), Kindle books, etc. Some revenue comes from promoting affiliate products that are complementary to our niches and the lowest priority is doing work for small businessesโ€ฆ Designing/implementing funnels, some coachingโ€ฆ I outsource everything and am essentially an idea-guy/project manager, really.

When I was first getting started, tho, it was 100% oppositeโ€ฆ I survived on gigs from small/local businesses (Wordpress and SEO mostly) while learning how to build email lists and convert traffic.

All of my client work has been word of mouthโ€ฆ Or from in-person networking I would go to WordPress meetup groups or other interesting groupsโ€ฆ Every small business owner needs a reliable web person/internet marketing expert!

Iโ€™ve never bid on jobs on a market place like odesk/upwork.

I was always willing to get on the phone with the people I meet whether they are a local business owner, friends/family/friends of friends for free coaching/consulting sessions to help them โ€˜get itโ€™ and if they did it themselves, great, if they hired me, great.

And by โ€˜get itโ€™ I mean the basics of content marketing/SEO with Wordpress

It positioned me as a helpful and knowledgeable person for a number of business owners and since I outsourced everything, the work was always done very fast for a fraction of what US based designers would charge.

My name/info still gets passed around from the jobs I did 4 and 5 years agoโ€ฆ And generally when people ask โ€˜What do you doโ€™ and I get into it, most people know someone who need internet marketing help.

Hey Neutron,

I am a marketer. There are more Developers I guess, as it is probably sometimes a bit easier to sit wherever you want. And because demand of developers is high. So a lot of people are glad to just find someone they can afford and who is still good.

But there are also a lot of marketers who are doing nomad lifestyle.
I actually just started with it, so I can not really give you my experiences.
But I managed to work 100% remote as a marketer and business development guy.

What exactly do you do?

Best,
Gerrit

I guess you could call me a marketer/developer. Iโ€™ve been a marketer for over 15 years, but taught myself development in my spare time. Iโ€™m currently setting up a bunch of startups and going nomad. Iโ€™ll probably be looking for some work here and there and just really trying to gauge where best to spend my efforts looking for some contract work. Contracts seem quite hard at times (especially on sites like freelancer.com), because clients often want the moon on a stick (โ€œbuild me facebook for $5โ€, or "get me on the first page of Google and then I might pay you $5). The jobs on remote.io/angel.co seem a bit better, but again they are very low paid it seems (marketing director - $20-$30kโ€ฆ). Seems like probably the best thing to do is work on my own startups, because the money just isnt worth it.

Y, Iโ€™ve struggled with making money doing marketing work as well - on the one hand folks donโ€™t know what to make of you if you showcase too many skills (โ€œthe confused mind always finds it easier to just automatically say noโ€โ€ฆ
On the other if you specialize, (I have experience writing business valuations and selling businesses,) it may not be something that many are looking for.
Lately Iโ€™ve started getting some work through Fiverr - because of the way thatโ€™s set up, itโ€™s almost like Iโ€™m paid for getting leads. In other words, folks start with $5, and this leads to other conversations / โ€œcustom offersโ€โ€ฆ plus, I can have multiple listings for different skills.

If anyone is interested in partnering up, Iโ€™d love to refer work outside my current core skills - basic graphic design, video editing, writing. (I can set up Wordpress sites but Iโ€™m NOT a designer, as you can see from my sites!)

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 6yr 6 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

Issues with not being a tax resident anywhere?

by @lightworker 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Anyone with knowledge regarding complications of not being a tax resident anywhere in the world? Iโ€™m aware that primary health care, bank account opening and incorperation can be problematic but are there other practical or legal factors I should be aware of?

And what about paying myself salary from a self-owned OECD company? I would like to know if I risk potentieal issues with the tax authorities in the jurisdiction of the company, especially regarding withholding tax.

Appreciate your input!

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 6yr 6 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 6yr 6 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Where are the nomads in Mexico City?

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 6yr 6 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brandonolin 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

Are there any nomads from India?

in India by @ankitdas123 6yr 6 years ago  | 56 comments

I have seen a lot of posts from different people across the world, but not even a single post from someone in India, who has been a nomad, either living within the country or traveling to another one.

Would definitely love to hear stories from such people. We are a couple traveling as social nomads who are trying to bridge the gap between the rural and urban societies in India. We have started out very humble and do not have much resources, so looking out for help from the community.

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari , Italy by @mitch_dina 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

Best way to connect with "local" nomads using Nomadlist?

by @migueltic 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi, Iโ€™ve seen that Nomad List offers different options that could work for connecting with other nomads that are in the same place as me (forum, Slack, user maps, matches and maybe even more options I havenโ€™t seen), but Iโ€™m not sure what is the best/recommended way to use all these options.

Should I use all of them? Start with a message in the forum and/or Slack?

Sending private messages to a lot of people feels a little bit โ€œaggressiveโ€. And matches are not based on current location if I understood it correctly.

By the way, I just arrived at Budapest

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?

Property Ownership - should digital nomads buy properties?

by @sparrow_23 6yr 6 years ago  | 16 comments

I have been a digital nomad for the last couple of years. I have always worked in tech and now run a couple of profitable online businesses that give me a reliable income and allow me to fund a nomadic lifestyle.

I recently exited one of my businesses and I am considering to invest the income from the sale in properties, mainly for 2 reasons:

a) I donโ€™t want to keep wasting my money in renting apartments across the cities I stay

b) I believe in properties as investment and I want to diversify my investment portfolio (mainly stocks)

After years of constant wander from one place to another, now I am the type of digital nomad who sticks to few locations: I mainly rotate across 4 places each year (San Francisco, Medellin, Berlin, Bali). Buying a house in each of those location would be difficult and too expensive. Therefore, I was wondering if there was any sort of service that combines an investment opportunity with the ability to access different properties around the world (even if just for a limited time per year) ?

Imagine living in 4 cities per year and having a house in each place that you can exclusively use for 3 months and at the same time having your investment growing (this depending on the market, of course). Wouldnโ€™t that be great? I believe it could be done via a property fund selling you a share and giving you access to some of their properties for a limited timeframe each year.

Has anyone heard of anything like that?

Thanks!
