Best place in Portugal near cool nomads, good surf, and a great cowork spot

in Portugal by @joelnicholson 5yr  | 9 comments

Hi there, title says it all. Canadian nomad hoping to find the city/town in Portugal with great, consistent surfing, a solid coworking spot, and a fun group of young nomads. Please recommend!

I recommend Madeira (the main town being Funchal). It's open for visitors in spite of the pandemic, with the requirement that they either submit evidence of a recent negative test or else take a free test on arrival (with quarantine for 12 hours tops while they check the result). It's still warm here, and I have found that there are quite a few nomads around (not necessarily members of this site). There is stunning hiking everywhere, and very good Internet. English is very widely spoken, though there are also plenty of opportunities for those who might like to learn Portuguese.

Here you go: nomadlist.com/places-with-many-nomads-near-a-beach-in-portugal

Lisbon and Porto match! There might be a few smaller ones not listed on NL, but they also won't have many nomads

Thanks! Definitely used your search tool before, it's great. Well done on the site as a whole, really unique tools you've built. Surprised to hear that smaller places like Ericeira and Alentejo won't have much of a nomad community.

Ericeira has a lot of permanent residents who work remotely and a few nomads passing through. Summer is more touristy and winter is quieter but with more serious waves. Was there last autumn for 6 weeks and had a great time. Think it'll only grow and grow - loads of coworking and coliving opening up

it's only a small place so there's not loads of neighbourhoods - you're kind of in the centre or not! best food was in very local style restaurants I thought - follow the Portuguese old boys! Adega pub is where everyone seems to go in the evening

I stayed at villadosirmaos.com (they are chilled, great people) which is in Ribamar, 5-10 minutes up the coast from Ericeira. Their friend David has opened a more formal co-living place here - www.sunagohouse.com. You can borrow surf gear at Vila dos Irmaos and David was a surf instructor. I don't know much about other options but there are plenty in town.

One of the big surf shops in a massive modern building has a cafe which is good to work from. You can also work in more local cafes sometimes which are quieter than ones in town. I'd usually surf at Ribeira and there's a big cafe/bar there which also accepts workers

Shout me if you go!

Thanks dude! They might have though but not enough for it to be properly tracked on here (e.g. not members checked in there as much). If there's a significant nomad community it'll start showing up here

Where do I get good legal advice/support to have a long-term stay in Portugal?

in Lisbon , Portugal by @mzorrilla 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hello, everyone!

My idea is to stay as low as 6 months and as long as a year (maybe, who knows) over Lisbon after doing some analysis from many cities in Europe.

I'm an Argentinian and Chilean (both nationalities) so... no Euro-pass for me (getting my Italian nationality could take 2 years easily). I'm also a remote worker and I have a really good income (I work for a Silicon Valley company) so I can show more than enough resources to stay in the country.

Everything I see online doesn't inspire me much confidence (most sites looks a bit scammy) and this is not a "vacation stay"... I want to be clear my head far away from Argentina right now. If someone has a good website, recommendations, etc I will super appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best place for solo UK traveller for surf, sun & working between Oct and Dec??

in Tenerife , Spain by @leojb 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.

Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??

Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.

Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.

Thanks a million. Much love.

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 5yr 5 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

Is there any good and safe coworking space with fast internet in Costa Rica?

in Costa Rica by @sven 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

Everything is in the title.

Iโ€™m working on a big project so I will need fast internet (>15 mbps).
If itโ€™s close to the beach, it would be even better.

Thanks !!

Would you recommend โ€œWork Zoneโ€ http://www.oficinasplaya.com over Nest?
Do you have other coworking spaces there you would recommend?

And where is a good place to stay (i.e. coliving)?

Foreigner owned Coworking business in Malaysia

in Malaysia by @newyam 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.

Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.
Cheers
Yamin

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @adele 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.

Which coworking spaces are open 24/7?

by @yako 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere around the world? Sometimes because of my line of work I need to be awake when everyone is sleeping on the country I am in (but I know I am not the only one!). It would be amazing to share that time at a coworking space with others who like to work at night or who have to be awake. Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere in the world?

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Bring external monitor to SE asia and avoid coworking cost?

by @anderkd 8yr 8 years ago  | 13 comments

Would it be advisable or wacky to lug an external monitor from the US in hopes of avoiding coworking costs by working from Airbnb with decent wifi? Iโ€™m not sold on coworking spaces, and like the solitude of coding away in my own little airbnb space. One screen is limiting to productivity, hence the love of an external monitor. Thoughts?
