BED BUGS. How the hell do you get rid of them?

by @thom801 10yr  | 4 comments

Hey yโ€™all. My girlfriend and I are in Austria and we have bed bugs. We stayed at a hostel and when they moved us to a new room it was crawling with them and my girlfriend got bit about 60 times. We tried our best to nuke our stuff in a dryer and get rid of them but seems like we still have them. Does not bother me but my gf is super allergic and it is destroying her.

From all the research I have done the best solution is a product called Diatomaceous Earth (DE) which is a powder that contains tiny sharp crystals which compromise the exoskeleton of insects and kills them very effectively and is non toxic. From all reviews I have read, this is the ultimate tool against bed bugs. I am trying right now to buy some but it is pretty hard to get some ordered quickly.

Link to a DE product in Europe: http://www.diatomretail.co.uk/collections/diatompest

Wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and what types of things can be done to treat it and avoid being infested in the future. Thank you!

You need to focus on treating your backpacks. theyโ€™re probably in there.

I created an account specifically to respond to this so youโ€™re welcome.

Hereโ€™s what you do: You wash and dry on high heat (the highest possible and two cycles) all of your clothing. You can also stash it in the freezer for 24 hours. Do that with your shoes etc as well. You can also dry clean things but then you risk giving them bedbugs if theyโ€™re not careful/aware. Books and things that canโ€™t be cleaned or frozen should be wiped down with rubbing alcohol. Everything needs to be treated and then stored in airtight bags so you arenโ€™t just chasing them around your things. Keep doing this until theyโ€™re gone. One little bug can wreak havoc so you need to kill them all.

Diatomaceous Earth is glorious. Dump it everywhere. Itโ€™s non-toxic to humans and pets so go to town with it. Itโ€™s even good as a preventative measure.

I had about 2 bugs in my apartment a long time ago (my neighbor was an asshole and they spread through the building) so I feel your girlfriends pain.

Treat all your things and move housing. You can get rid of them.

I assume youโ€™ve moved out of that hostel. Even if you have moved, you might have brought some of the bugs with you.

Iโ€™d try going to a pharmacy, go to one in the touristy part of town if you are worried that they donโ€™t speak English. And getting a surface spray then doing the whole room.

Iโ€™ve never encountered them but my sister did and Iโ€™ve never, every put my suitcase on the bed again.

Good luck getting rid of them.

Oh man! Iโ€™ve had them and theyโ€™re terrible. I actually couldnโ€™t find a solution back then (it was years ago), so I ended up nuking everything in the dryer and getting rid of stuff that wasnโ€™t nukable. It was a major purge.

So I canโ€™t speak to getting rid of them very well, but I can talk about avoiding them! If a room has them, the most likely place theyโ€™ll be is under the seams along the side of the mattress. Contrary to popular belief, they are visible. So checking the seams of the mattress is usually a good indicator if the room is infested. Also, never put suitcases on the bed, especially before youโ€™ve checked.

So sorry you guys are in that situation. Iโ€™m also allergic and was miserable (thus the wild purging of anything that might have them).

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Moving to Florida for tax reasons: DMV question

by @ileitch 9yr 9 years ago  | 15 comments

Hey all, this is a bit of Hail Marry, hopefully someone knows the answer!

So Iโ€™m โ€œmovingโ€ to Florida from CA because FL has no income tax. Iโ€™m using one those websites that provide a physical address and scan all your mail for you. For CA to be satisfied from a Tax perspective that I am in fact a resident of FL, I need to transfer my driverโ€™s license.

The downside is that my new address is out in the middle of nowhere, and Iโ€™d really rather not have to visit the county unless absolutely necessary.

So, does anyone know if itโ€™s necessary to transfer my license at a DMV in the same county as my new address, or can I do it from any county in FL?

Oh the joys of being a nomadโ€ฆ

Where to stay and work in Florida

by @nspessot 9yr 9 years ago  | 0 comments

I am planning going to Florida during May, 2016, it would be for one or two months, because of my VISA. I was looking for some space to stay and work, but they arenโ€™t cheap as I thought, so any advice about places is very welcome, or if someone is planning a short trip to FL and want to join we can talk. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone convinced a SO to begin traveling with them?

by @dhamm 10yr 10 years ago  | 5 comments

I have a girlfriend who is considering traveling with me and was trying to figure out what she could do that is also remote to contribute. Iโ€™m wondering if anyone here has had the same experience or just some ideas about what a SO with no technical skills could do to work remotely?

How is Merida, Mexico as a digital nomad destination?

in Merida , Mexico by @rusticbohemian 10yr 10 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey guys.

Iโ€™m thinking of heading to Merida for 2-4 months to see if I like it, and would love to hear from people who live there or have visited for significant periods of time.

How much would it cost to get an apartment with internet per month? Nothing fancy, but not a disgusting place either.

How is the internet speed?

How is public transportation? Can you get around easily by bike, including to grocery stores?

Is a car required? I could drive down from Texas, I suppose.

How do you like living there?

Hi guys, Iโ€™m Collis, cofounder and CEO of Envato. We have a team of 250, ninety of whom work remote in all parts of the globe.

Our sites are also home to thousands of creative freelancers making a living selling on our marketplaces. That community has earned over $250,000,000!

When we started Envato, my wife Cyan and I wanted to travel the world with a business - so we started this one. We did manage it for a year working from HK, Canada, Florida, Paris and Singapore before returning home.

Iโ€™m joined by Jarel who has worked with Envato since 2009 from around the US, our headquarters in Australia, as well as stints in Eastern Europe and Thailand.
