Hi! I'm Lukas Sommer, I travel the world bartering my skills for experiences! AMA

by @goodthngs 10yr  | 5 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m Lukas, a professional web developer, designer, part-time photographer and and a wannabe writer. Iโ€™m travelling the world bartering my skills for experiences with my project Good Things Everywhere. I started to travel over one year ago and offer my skills for a room for the night, travel expenses or anything good really.

In the past I spent a few years building crazy websites for the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, worked for advertising, run a non-profit music project, wrote blogs, played music and people danced to it.

Iโ€™m travelling since late 2013 and my journey has led me working for projects from Berlin where I used to live and work to Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Portugal, Holland and Iโ€™m now to Brazil. I barter with mostly sustainable businesses, charity, eco-tourism and community projects that very often need an online specialist and donโ€™t have the funding to pay for an agency or professional.

I traded work for a recycling network in New Zealand, for a volunteer organisation in Thailand, for a University in the Netherlands and now Iโ€™m at a sustainable eco village in Brazil, among many others. Iโ€™ve been having the best time, using very little money and living beyond the tourist path.

I publish photos on Instagram, stories on Maptia, write on Medium or you can talk to me on Twitter.

Marina from Nomadlist.io already asked me a few questions in an interview on the blog. Feel free to ask me anything.

Hey Lukas,

I would love to hear how these projects would run on a day-to-day basis. I come from an agency background (since then moved to product development).

How do you handle scope? Scope creep? How have you agreed on whatโ€™s fair in return for what length of stay?

Have you ever run into a situation where what youโ€™ve done didnโ€™t meet the expectations of whoever was providing accommodation / board?

Have you ever run into administrative burdens (country youโ€™re in assumes because you work, you have to pay taxes, for example, even though no money has changed hands).

Best,
Gabor

Hey @javorszky  Good question!
Often it gets pretty chaotic! Like right now Iโ€™m in a simultaneous content, concept, design and development phaseโ€ฆ pretty much doing everything at the same time because thereโ€™s little time and although planned a few weeks in advance everything always changes when someone wants a new website and starts to be aware of the possibilities. Itโ€™s always a new challengeโ€ฆ every type of organisation being used to different (or no) processes. I learned to be very patient and unorthodox, compared to projects phases that Iโ€™m used to from the pastโ€ฆ

When I started I just agreed on room and board in advance, more recently I always try to get my travel expenses sorted too. Other than that it prefer not to come with a big list of thing I want, but deliver a first week worth of work, giving my best. Iโ€™ve realised that this is sometimes what people need to understand that Iโ€™m not just travelling and chilling, but really want to build cool stuff or make a difference. Depending on the amount I work Iโ€™ll usually get lots of unexpected generosity, like travel expenses, but without agreeing on it. That has happened oftenโ€ฆ

I never had anyone unhappy with my work but it has happened that I didnโ€™t manage to fully finish something that I started. Iโ€™ve always tried to finish afterwards, which is a pain when youโ€™re somewhere elseโ€ฆ easier to extend your stay if you can (therefore easier to plan with a few weeks between projects).

Regarding administrative burdens I havenโ€™t had problems but wellโ€ฆ many countries do consider bartering working, but itโ€™s a hassle to get work visas and all that, if youโ€™re around for a few weeks only. Depends on the length of my stay I guessโ€ฆ

Hi Lukas,

Iโ€™ve read the interview on the Nomadlist blog, and your story was very inspiring.
You mentioned that actually finding new opportunities is not hard at all, and I would like to hear more how you have got all those interesting opportunities along with your own itinerary and vision.

My last year was hectic, I worked for a while for a co-working space in AUS, and got some event coordinating projects here and there while I contributed articles for a media company in Korea. But all things happened by accident, those were not something I could predict or plan at all, and I was not the one who could control and manage things along with my own itenerary :frowning:

Before people send you all kinds of invitations, how did you find projects what you wanted to get involved with? And which skills would be essential for that?

Thanks in advance  and looking forward to hearing your next journey!

Hey @youjindo!
When I started my journey in Australia my first projects came through contacts in Berlin, then through friends I made and a few recommendations. At the time I had no idea how it would actually workโ€ฆ but luckily I had a few first connections to get started. In the beginning I just googled and contacted everything from charities to surf schools, but often with very little success. Then I was lucky enough to get featured by GOOD with an article and what followed was a ton of emails with invites from all over the world. My mind was blown at the time and it looked like the concept of bartering work for charity and non-profit really hit a sweet spot, when you have access to the right network. It felt like the world suddenly opened its doors. I kept getting a lot of invites from then on and I could more or less choose, and plan an itinerary around these placements. However, one thing I didnโ€™t want was to always plan everything, since I actually like some things to happen by accident. For example, when I arrived in Phuket in Thailand earlier last year I read through my Lonely Planet ebook and stumbled over Openmind Projects, a volunteer organisation in Nong Khai. I wrote them an email and a few weeks later was sitting in their office on the border to Laosโ€ฆ these spontaneous opportunities are very welcome and too much planning wonโ€™t make them possible. So generally I can say that I just keep eyes and ears open for projects I like and then I reach outโ€ฆ after the initial trouble in a majority of times I got a positive answer (or at least an answer). I also got many invites from just normal people who loved the concept, not to work but just to hang out.

Regarding skills I think you just need to be good a communicating that youโ€™re not coming to waste anyoneโ€™s time and sometimes I even did like an assessment of a web project or suggested things that I could be working on. And when there is no project straight ahead I take it easy and visit a new placeโ€ฆ or do freelance work that occasionally pops up and that I survive from too.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

in Guatemala by @chasindreams 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Ukraine Residency

I have a slightly above average US income which I can work remotely from paired with a $1000 a month income stream and more than enough to purchase a middle end Flat in Ukraine. Does anyone with knowledge of this process have any advice to acquire a reliable way to stay in the country?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 4yr 4 years ago  | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.
