How can I do a 6 month South America trip on a budget?

by @anon72215238 10yr  | 8 comments

I am bored with SEA and apart from Burma and a possible trip to Cameron Highlands, I am ready to move on to South America while I avoid the Eastern European winter. From October until the end of April. The purpose of the trip is to see the parts of South America that are worth seeing to tick them off the list and potentially never need to visit South America again (last time i left due to budget constraints and wanting to get back to SEA).

In the 2012/2013 during the South American summer, over the period of about 9-10 weeks I went to Bogota, Medellin, Solento, Cali, Quito, Guayaquil, Lima, Cuzco, Lima. I feel like I have seen enough of North-Western part of South America and I would like to restart my trip in Lima and head south and then travel around the bottom of Sth Am to B.A then end the trip in Rio.

This should take around 6-7 months and the weather should be good to see Patagonia, right?

What is the best route for someone who doesnโ€™t like to hang around in places for more than 7 days (each place max.), if I want to stick to a budget of about $1000-$1200 per month? I am aware that buses are slow, long journeys but I am not in a rush for this tripโ€ฆ just avoiding the European winter and escaping the pointlessness of my time in SEA.

Would like tips for which places to go, avoid, internet speeds, problems, which bus company you used.

I do affiliate marketing so easy access to an internet connection is important, but internet speed does not matter too much.

Great thread guysโ€ฆ Thanks for sharing the info! SO + myself are about to pack up shop in London to embark on a indefinite tour of this part of the world. Also hope to kick-start a digital nomad path. Feel relieved to read the average costs cause we have already been budgeting for around $1000pm without having ever stepped foot in SA.

It is hard to talk days and months, cause everyone travels differently. Thatโ€™s why I said a minimum of 3 months.

I would burn out quickly with that kind of speed.

Also some people hate Bolivia, whereas I spent 2 months there and came back for another 3 months.

Imho, just take it as it comes. You can always take a direct bus to B.A. Just keep in mind that flights are usually very expensive in South America and should be avoided.

Some notable exceptions are:

  • Santa Cruz (Bolivia) to Sao Paulo (Brazil)
  • Santiago (Chile) to Buenos Aires (Argentina)
  • Buenos Aires (Argentina) to Sao Paulo (Brazil)

plus some domestic flights, but they are still expensive.

The only inexpensive flights are domestic ones in Brazil (GOL, Azul, TAM)

$1k is definitely doable. I did it on much less, around $700/month. But thatโ€™s an average, you will spend more in Chile.

Argentina used to be on the expensive side, but the peso has collapsed to less than half its value in the past 3 years. No idea about inflation though.

You will have to do a tour through the South West of Bolivia, but itโ€™s only about $70-80 for 3 days, all included. The 4 day tour ending in Tupiza probably more like $100-110.

Also you really shouldnโ€™t miss a tour of Cerro Rico in Potosi ($15 with Big Deal Tours), the death road in La Paz ($35 with El Solario) and if you have the time: paragliding in Cochabamba ($35 with andesXtremo). Just show up a day before for the tours, no need to book ahead.

If youโ€™re into hiking, you can do a guided Huyana Potosi summit from La Paz for around $100, guide and gear all included. Huayna Potosi is one of the easiest and definitely the cheapest 6.000m mountain in the world.

But besides that, you can organize everything by yourself, even Colca Canyon in Arequipa or Cochamo in Chile. In fact DIY is more fun

If you wanna do a whirlwind tour, Iโ€™d say you need a minimum of 3 months from Lima to Bariloche, with all the stops I listed. You will see a lot, but weโ€™re definitely not talking slow travel.

Three months just to get to Bariloche? So another 1-2 months to go to B.A, S.P. and Rio then.

Chile is as expensive as Europe, no comparison at all to Peru, Ecuador or Bolivia. You can still easily travel Chile on $1000 USD a month, but it wonโ€™t be anywhere near the comfort further north.

Probably a good idea to spent more time in Argentina than in Chile but you shouldnโ€™t miss Santiago and Valparaiso.

Also the area around lake Llanquihue at the Northern end of Patagonia is just beautiful and trekking in Cochamo or Fuatelufu will probably satisfy all your Patagonia needs.

Starting out in Lima is a very good idea, since you havenโ€™t been to Bolivia. Iโ€™d say:

  1. Peru: Lima - Arequipa - Puno
  2. Bolivia: Copacabana - La Paz - Sucre - Potosi - Uyuni - Tupiza
  3. Argentina: Salta - Mendoza
  4. Chile: Santiago - Valparaiso - Pucon - Puerto Varas

Puerto Varas is already in Patagonia and a great homebase for Llanquihue lake, Chiloe island and Trekking Cochamo, depending on how much time you have.

Puerto Varas is also starting point of Carretera Austral going to Southern Patagonia, but tbh, I would switch back to Argentina after Puerto Varas + sidetours.

Puerto Varas, Bariloche and Chiloe were more than enough Patagonia for me, so I never got further south than Chiloe (and donโ€™t intend to), but people usually go down the ruta 40 in Argentina:

  1. Argentina: Bariloche - El Bolson - Perito Moreno - El Chalten - El Calafate
  2. Chile: Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine

Ofc you can just head to Buenos Aires after Bariloche if you donโ€™t wanna hit Southern Patagonia.

Internet/Wifi shouldnโ€™t be a problem except maybe for the no manโ€™s land of Uyuni and Tupiza in Bolivia.

Buses in Argentina and Chile are very good, sometimes have Wifi and are very expensive. In Bolivia they are dirt cheap in quality and fare.

Take a lot of Pesos Chilenos, Dollars or Euros to Argentina or it will be expensive, check the dolar blue rate.

Awesome reply, thanks.

Patagonia is the part I am most excited about, along with the Bolivian salt plains. Why did you say that you saw enough? What about Ushuaia?

@timnomad:
Patagonia is great and the Bolivian South West is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

For me hiking in the mountains can get repetitive fast. I did some trekking in Cochamo, some in Bariloche and some in Petrohue. We also biked some days on the island of Chiloe, around Bariloche and around Llanquihue lake. That was enough Patagonia for me, but ofc your mileage may vary.

My gf did both Arco Iris in Cochamo and the 4 day Torres del Paine (W Route) and she preferred Cochamo. So I donโ€™t think going further south is necessarily better and so far nobody had a lot of praise for Ushuaia. Ofc Perito Moreno must be quite a sight, but wasnโ€™t worth spending 2 days on a bus from Bariloche and back for me personally.

Just go south as far as you want, there is no need to plan anything ahead unless you wanna fly.

Btw, you can also take a ferry from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales, which is supposed to be quite beautiful.

Great info. Do you think I could spend only $1000USD per month, including travel and visa costs, within these countries? I probably wonโ€™t spend much time in Chile and if I do I will just stay in hostels. I donโ€™t go to bars or nightclubs, I wonโ€™t drink much (if at all) and I usually donโ€™t pay for organized tours. So $1k p/m is doable?

How long do you think a trip like this would take if I wasnโ€™t hanging around, just seeing what there is to see with a few rests days throw in here and there.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)
