If you should learn any skill which one would it be?

by @martabcn 10yr  | 28 comments

Hello!

Iโ€™m Marta from Barcelona. Iโ€™ve studied advertising but Iโ€™ve been working all these years in costumer service and tourism. Iโ€™m very curious person and I have knowledge a little bit of everything but I donโ€™t have a special skill developed.
I have been looking for a job in costumer service remotely but spanish spoken countries to work in that way is not very common yet.

I would like to work remotely and I would like to focus in one/two specific skills (SOcial media, wordpress, seoโ€ฆ?).

Any advice from your own experience?

Anyone that have been started from zero?

Thank you!

If to select the most important skill - that would be always one extending my communication possibilities. So I would select one more human language I guess. English and German, that is what I already have in my skills set (in addition to my mother tongue Russian) and I would add Chinese, Spanish and French. Communication covers 50% of deal, the rest 50% are related to professional skills like software development (in my case).

If I could master any one skill it would be selling.

Being an entrepreneur means you have to learn many skills, but you wont succeed if you canโ€™t get sales. Sales is a vital component of all businesses and many companies would kill to have a hero salesman on-board.

Not to mention, itโ€™s the perfect location independent gig. The web is full of affiliate and partnership programs for independent sellers. Many have high and even recurring commissions.

Iโ€™m in marketing, and marketing is great but itโ€™s only the first step in the process. Itโ€™s all about closing the deal and getting that contract that makes the real difference and puts money in your pocket.

Just my thoughts.

Hi Marta,

I would recommend getting the free Inbound Marketing Certification from Hubspot:

It covers a solid foundation for making money with social media and digital marketing practices. I started by building my first ecommerce website with no experience, just a burning desire to make it a reality. You can easily get experience remotely on Elance and Odesk.

Cheers,
Kyle

If youโ€™re learning just - - - a skill, youโ€™re in trouble.

Multi-disciplinary thinkers and practitioners will rule the future.

Not those with siloed thinking or skills.

Whatever skill you push on, at a bare minimum think in terms of the trifecta. Though, youโ€™ll need much more (domain wise) to stay competitive.

Craft (engineering, design, copywriting, etc.,) + Business + Psychology.

Thatโ€™s the minimum for participation and earning competitively in your craft/ skill. You have to be able to tee up your craft to understanding of context (business and user) motivations in context - and quantify how your craft shapes those situations.

Otherwise, youโ€™re just pixel, code and copy janitors in the background.

โ€œOtherwise, youโ€™re just pixel, code and copy janitors in the background.โ€ some people are ok with that and thatโ€™s a good thing because the world needs people who are the ones who implement the ideas just as much as it needs the ones who come up with them.

Fair enough.

Works for short term. Not sure about long term.

You donโ€™t leave yourself much room for defensibility/ competitiveness or risk mitigation should competition pick up, market values drop or the market landscape changes.

Change is inevitable, imo

Thank you guysโ€ฆvery useful information and valid points of view.
Now days I work in digital marketing from a communications and content side, but technically I am in a very low level.
So in order to level up, what language do you guys think I could start with? Considering and being realistic, that I wonโ€™t pick it up all in one go.

Cheers!!

All these answers are great. Another skill that you will need regardless of which specific field you choose is being able to write copy that sells. Whatever you choose to do (if you are freelancing or building your own business anyway) you will have to convince people to give you money. If I had to choose any one skill that would have the most leverage, I would go with sales (and psychology and all that goes with it. โ€œInfluenceโ€ by Cialdini is a great book for this). You may even have a headstart in this through your advertising and service experience.
Good luck in your endeavors!

Hi Marta!
If you donโ€™t have technical skills the best way to start from zero is create a Wordpress blog and share your passion. Write about anything you really like and built a community around it. Then, find their needs and create a product that can provide value to your community.
Other options are already mentioned: copywriting, social media, advertising campaignsโ€ฆ actually, there are plenty of options out there to become a digital nomad and travel the world. You just need to find the one itโ€™s for you.
Iโ€™m in Barcelona so let me know if you need help.
Cheers.

@shayna I read the link, very interesting. Yes, maybe copywriting it would be easier for me or social media. However Iโ€™m very interesting in wordpress!
@wanderingdev Thank you so much, I was reading about Ruby and I found it Codeacademy and the courses are in spanish, so itโ€™s great! I will check the other two that you have been told. Also I foudn www.railsgirls.com the do workshops aroudn the world to teach Ruby!

Well, I also though that run Google or facebook advertising campaings will be a good idea, but I guess is not such well paid like copywriting or development.

Thank you for the info!

If you have a background in advertising, you might find it easier to get into copywriting (writing to persuade people to buy a product or service) - this is used on sales pages, in e-mails, etc. and businesses are willing to invest in getting text produced that will win them more customers.

This skill would require you to be more of a freelancer, seeking out your own clients - but hereโ€™s a story of how a non-native English speaker went from zero to 28K in six months offering copywriting services. She was very proactive in contacting potential clients and offering a high-quality service: http://www.thepersuasionrevolution.com/nonnative-english-speaker-no-online-connections-went-zero-20k-4-months-ztl-review/ (she also talks about a course she took; I donโ€™t think itโ€™s necessary to take the course, but you can learn from the principles of what she actually did to get the clients and build her copywriting business).

Iโ€™ve had a degree in Web Development and MSc in Business IT. But I did linux/mobile development, then i went freelance/nomad i took the road of web development.

Selling yourself properly and working with client was a totally new thing for me. Before that I was a geek who never seen client in eyes. It was very scary for me and very fulfilling experience.

Hello everyone,
I read carefully all your answers and, as Iโ€™m also a student and a future digital nomad, I wanted to know which programmation languages are the best to learn in order to create websites such as nomadlist and nomadforumโ€ฆ Because, I learned HTML and CSS by myself but I do not know other languages. Can you help me with that ? In particular @wanderingdev
I already find great pdf online course on : PHP and Symphony, Mysql and javascript. Is it enough if I learn that ? How much time will it take to me ?

Thank you very much to everyone,
Have a really nice day

I would not recommend PHP though some use it. Javascript can be good, especially paired with your HTML/CSS skills, especially if you can become really good at Angular or one of the new releases like Meteor. Look at Python and Ruby/Rails as those tend to be very high in demand. Code School, Codecademy & Treehouse are good resources.

Iโ€™ve been pretty good with web development, but didnโ€™t really start from zero. I used to work for a local company for 1 year then realised it was too boring in the office everyday so I quit and worked remotely for a Polish company for almost 2 years as a customer support working in their forum and ticket system, and I started my nomad life since that. Now Iโ€™m a freelancer working for some regular clients to fuel my living & travelling while trying to build a startup.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!
