What immunizations should I get for India and South East Asia?

in India by @robetus 9yr  | 17 comments

Iโ€™m leaving for India in about a month and then headed to Thailand and probably Indonesia. What immunizations should I get, and which ones did you get for these areas. The CDC says Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most and long list for some travelers. Iโ€™m also considering a Malaria prevention pill. I will be in India for 10 days and Thailand and Indonesia for about a month.

Any information regarding what other nomads have or have experience with would be greatly appreciated.

Typhoid
Iโ€™ve gotten it In past

Ull know when u have it, the ull get to a doc shoot 3 shots each one a day and Gatorade urself and ur done

Hepatitis - we got the bad one vaccinated at school

Malaria - prevention is worse then the disease itself I guess

And bottom line - the more u vaccinate the more the diseases adapt

Think large - and watch wher u put urself and what u put into u

If u have a delicate stomach donโ€™t eat raw

Never drink tap

What else?
Perhaps a rabies and the basic โ€œblood poisoningโ€ vaccine ( sorry no idea how itโ€™s Calle din English, the one u get from rusty iron cuts)

More Is a waste of money and time imho

Does depend on where youโ€™re going. Quite honestly, I wouldnโ€™t eat anything from the restaurants or the street either, especially seafood. Sticking to hotel food. I ate at a perfectly good restaurant while in Delhi, but had a very bad stomach bug, so much that it caused me to have jaundice on my forehead and nearly hospitalised me because of dehydration. Someone I went with had been before, and he simply stayed in his hotel room and ate crisps for the whole trip because he was ill last time.

That sounds depressing as hell. Whatโ€™s the point of travelling if youโ€™re going to sit in your room eating crisps.

I have a pretty weak stomach but I find that good street food is best. You can watch them cook it. up fresh At a restaurant or hotel, you donโ€™t know if the food has been sitting in a warmer for ages.

I got the feeling that itโ€™s the water food is washed with that caused my problem. It seemed to hit me a lot harder than others, so not sure if itโ€™s something to do with me, but Iโ€™m generally pretty healthy. I guess some handle it better than others. I think I would go back and eat the food now, because after the experience I had - nothing can put me down!!!

Get the recommended ones hep and typhoid. Theyโ€™re useful world wide and last a long time after the boosters As someone else pointed out typhoid is a risk from swimming in lakes, waterfalls, pools, etcโ€ฆ Odds are thatโ€™ll come up on a trip through SEA.

Donโ€™t bother with the malaria previcentive unless your going to be specifically placeswhere it is in its endemic and you canโ€™t avoid being bitten (countryside/jungle unprotected by house or net at night). Otherwise plan on just using mosquito repellent when you need it since you donโ€™t want dengue either.

Depends a lot on whether you are going to leave the cities or not. I got some of these because my employer required them, but they required booster shots some time later and I wasnโ€™t working for them any longer. Six months in BKK long after boosters were required and not sick. YMMV.

Regardless of whether you are getting shots or not, drink water from sealed bottles and think twice about drinks with ice in them. If you are not sure, look at what others around you are doing. If thereโ€™s a drink vendor with their shop welded to a moped and nobody is in line, it might be because they arenโ€™t reputable โ€“ and might not be there next week. If you are in the same neighborhoods for any length of time, figuring out who the regulars are goes a long way to staying healthy. Many of those carts have decades of history and have been on TV and in newspapers. Such food vendors focus on sustainability and service when they get popular, not getting a bigger restaurant with higher costs. But also note that some vendors are at the same spot only on certain days of the week. Itโ€™s much harder to figure out without a grasp of the local language.

I know that seems a little OT, but the reality is shots are often hard on the body and a little common sense can avoid the need for many of them. If you plan on swimming in the Ganges or spending weeks in inland Thailand, itโ€™s a different situation than if you are just city hopping, which can also be great!

This is what I got:

  • Yellow fever. DE: Gelbfieber. FR: fiรจvre jaune.
  • Hepatities A. DE: Hepatities A. FR: Hรฉpatite A.
  • Hepatitis B. FR: Hรฉpatite B. DE: Hepatitis B.
  • Rabies. FR: Rage. DE: Tolwut.
  • Polio, stands for Poliomyelitis. DE: Poliomyelitis. FR: Poliomyรฉlite.
  • DTP, stands for Diphterie Tetanos Pertussis. DE: Diphtherie Tetanus Keuchhusten (Pertussis). FR: diphtรฉrie tรฉtanos coqueluche.
  • MMR vaccines, stands for Measles Mumbs Rubella. DE: Masern Mumps Rรถteln. FR: Rougeole Rubรฉole Oreillon.
  • Typhoid

Finally, I wanted to get Meningitis (FR: Mรฉningite, DE: Meningitis) but this is a virus that is not in Asia so it was not recommended by my Doctor.

p.s. I also put the name of the vaccins in French & German as you might need that if you get your vaccins while traveling

I actually looked into the diseases and didnโ€™t realise that Typhoid is bacterial. Bacteria is a lot easier to filter out of water, as opposed to viruses.

For malaria there are 4 different pills I think and one with little or no side effects but you have to take it every day. Iโ€™m not too sure about that though. I probably wonโ€™t, Iโ€™ll be visiting in the lower mosquito season also.

I know that in the US getting a vaccination for Hep A and Typhoid would be as difficult as handing cash over at a clinic, but Iโ€™m in Germany so I have to figure out how it works here. One of my friends here is going to Brazil and she is getting a lot but she also says that I need a vaccine card to get any vaccines. I read that itโ€™s harmless to get a vaccine twice if you already have it so Iโ€™m not why they would need a record. I know what I want. Weโ€™ll see. If anybody has experience with this in Germany and feedback would be appreciated.

After further research I donโ€™t think Iโ€™m going to get the Typhoid vaccine. May just wing it. Megadose on Vitamin C.

Here are some efficacy studies (The injectable is pretty good): http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD001261.pub3/abstract;jsessionid=8CCFAEE4DD77EF12CBBDF621FC261DCB.f01t03

The studies arenโ€™t terrible, what made you change your mind? Iโ€™m going in for vaccination in a couple days. In Germany itโ€™s no problem at all, they just make you pay a couple Euro for a โ€œpassโ€ that shows what vaccines youโ€™ve had.

For anyone who is in Germany just do a search for your cities name and โ€œTropenmedizinโ€. That should give you the correct place to go to for travel vaccinations.

If itโ€™s in the โ€œmost travelersโ€ category, Iโ€™d get it unless I had a concrete reason why it wasnโ€™t necessary. Most CDC-suggested vaccines are fairly inexpensive (my insurance didnโ€™t cover travel vaccinations, and Hep A was like $80?) and protect you from awful diseases.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid are the the ones Iโ€™m getting. I am heading to Bali for two monthes in March and will probably carry on to Thailand after.

Malaria prevention probably isnโ€™t required unless youโ€™re specifically going somewhere where it is known to be rampant.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)
