Best way to send and receive money abroad beside Paypal?

by @dearezkitha 9yr  | 15 comments

Hi guys

According to you what is the best way to send and receive money abroad beside paypal?
What are the fees?
What are the pros and cons?

Bitcoin.

Have you heard of bitwage? They are pretty much the fastest (same day) and cheapest way, but they are quite limited in where they payout unless you want bitcoin. They also donโ€™t require the sending party to sign up, so itโ€™s pretty easy on your clients.

There are hidden fees when using Bitwage.

  • FX rate is based on BTC rate. E.g. USD => EUR is calculate using USD/BTC => BTC/EUR. When transferring from USD to EUR I usually end up with a 0.3 - 3% fee.
  • Receive Wire Transfer: 10 USD. Waived when paying $10/m subscription
  • Receive money in bank account with FX conversion: 1% on top of BTC-calculated rate. Waived wieht subscription

Otherwise Iโ€™ve found their service to be pretty great

If you have access (or are able to open) bank accounts in both countries, bitcoin is an excellent option, probably the cheapest out there, although it may require a bit more management than the other option.
Transferwise and other services like it would be my next choice.

@dea_rezkitha

I have been using Bitcoins for a while & so far if you want to do real time transaction, you will have no problem.
This is the model that one need to follow

Buy it > Transfer it
On receivers end:

Receive it > Sell it > Transfer the fund to bank account

Great saving. I have been trying to persuade my affiliate marketing managers to start paying me using Bitcoins. It saves a lot!

@theunis How about the volatility of bitcoin rate - will that affect you personally. I have opened my bitcoin account but havenโ€™t convinced any of my clients to use it because it is fairly new concept for them. Just want to know your thoughts or experience on that?

@theunisk 8yr

Volatility is definitely a problem - I keep some money in BTC and simply accept the volatility it is subjected to (so far the overall trend has been positive, which will hopefully continue, but who knows). However, the strategy I mentioned above is not subject to this. I purchase BTC in the US and immediately sell in my home country, so the price does not change.
That being said, this has recently been dealt a blow since I used Circle to purchase the BTC, and they have stopped buying/selling BTC. There is another US company called Coinbase that does this, but I have been unable to verify with them. So I am now stuck with either following the transferwise route, or doing a wire transfer to a BTC exchange such as bitstamp.

Hi @dea_rezkitha

Last year a looked for many options to receive payment form my clients abroad and by far the best (for me at least) is Payoneer.

You pay 30USD annually for the account, and they send you a credit card wich you use to get your money at an ATM, and they charge 3.15USD per transaction. You can also use the credit card to buy stuff directly or internet, instead of withdrawing the money.

[admin: paragraph deleted. Violation of community guidelines]

As I see it, moving money internationally has its costs, and you have to look not only for price but also for accessibility and reliability.

Hi @chelocoach, Do Payoneer has any limit transaction. I found this very annoying from Paypal that like to froze the account if you received big amount of money. And can people send money to your Payoneer account?

Hi @dea_rezkitha I think itโ€™s only payments, not for sending money.
Once I got my transfer frozen until I sent the proper documentation, and then they released the money after some days. This may happen if you get an unusual payment. They will ask you what they should expect about the payments you receive and you should have no problems if the payments are congruent to that.
Iโ€™m not clear about the money limits, I have a few thousands US (less than 4k) on this platform and no problem by now.

As mentioned, Transferwise is pretty great (0.5%). You should also look into Revolut, especially if you mostly have income in EUR, GBP and USD (near 0% for wide range of currencies, but payments tend to be slower than TW).

Can you use Revolut to receive payments from clients? Iโ€™ve been topping it up with my Payoneer, but Iโ€™m getting hit with transfer fees because Payoneer acts as a credit card. Still better than withdrawing direct from Payoneer and getting hit with their conversion rate.

Not really. But you shouldnโ€™t be hit with CC fees when topping up Revolut with the Payoneer card, as itโ€™s a prepaid or debit card. Have you tried contacting Revolut support? Apparently they might classify cards incorrectly sometimes, but they have the power to manually override it if they have made a mistake. But note that if youโ€™re topping up with USD youโ€™ll get fees anyway, but those arenโ€™t CC fees.

I personally use Leupay to receive money from clients (mostly in EUR), and then add it to Revolut from there.

@ifdattic 9yr

You could look into Transferwise, I personally use it for clients to pay my invoices. The payments are relatively quick, with notifications, and fees are relatively small. The only issue (as youโ€™re traveling probably less of an issue) is that the conversion has to happen, so you need to send in one currency, and receive in a different currency.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How to get post abroad for UK Expats??

by @davda1546 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi guys, wonder if you can help. I'm from the UK, and my husband and I are looking to go across Europe this coming year.

What's the best solution you've found re having all your post sent to you? I've found a site online that will set up a street address in the UK for you and scan in post to your email address, just wondering if you've found any other ways?

We've set up paperless statements, which has helped but with things like mortgages, official docs etc - how have you got around it?

Thanks so much!

How to arrange prescription medication abroad (for example Thailand / SEA)

in Thailand by @dezeisvastnogvrij 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Normally, when I go abroad for a longer period of time, I try to take as much medication with me from my home country as I can for that period. Which so far has worked well for me.

But if Iโ€™m going to be a full-time nomad that wonโ€™t work anymore. Mainly because Iโ€™ll then unregister from my country. Which has some downsides like not being able to have my current health insurance anymore. Other health insurance companies wonโ€™t cover existing conditions, so Iโ€™ll have to buy my medication โ€œover the counterโ€.

But since I need some medication which in The Netherlands (and I assume other countries) is only available on a doctors prescription. I was curious how people here arrange that (if there are any in the same boat as me).

The main medication I think would be hardest for me (and most expensive) to get is Epoetin-Alpha (Aranesp) injections.

Since thereโ€™s not really a โ€˜world wide standarizedโ€™ doctor prescription form, how do you get the medication abroad? Do you have a checkup there again at a local clinic before you can get the medication? (That would probably add to the cost too).

Iโ€™m a U.S. accountant who works with Americans who live abroad, ask me anything!

by @olwagner 7yr 7 years ago  | 100 comments

Hi everyone,

If you have a U.S. tax question or would like some U.S. tax insight on your business/structure, ask away!

I have been preparing tax returns for US citizens abroad since 2012. I can answer any question in US tax with an international flavor. I operate 1040abroad.com and I have maintained a blog at taxsamurai.com

I look forward to answering all your questions. And if you are in Ho Chi Minh City in December, letโ€™s meet !!!

April in Spain. Where to go besides Canary Islands

in Spain by @rynesweeney 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

So I head to Barcelona in a week for the next 4. I am reading some stuff online. I want to wing it and ask around when I get to Barce. But what I see online I may just spend the open three weeks I have in the Canary islands. The year round surfing and reasonable cost of living sounds great especially spending the first three months of 2018 on the beaches in Central America.

I fly out of Madrid the second week of May. I dont want to spend more than a couple days in Madrid. I had a week there last year. So if anybody could shed some insight based on their experiences that would be most bodacious.

For those who are still reading here are some interests of mine:

  • Hiking and outdoors activities in general.
  • Surfing/beaches
  • Food (this should be higher on this list actually).
  • Smaller and lesser known cities are ideal.

Thanks for any and all the help peoples.

See you in the forum, Ryne

How do you get paid abroad without paying tons of fees?

by @waterlooalex 9yr 9 years ago  | 18 comments

What method do you use to get paid by your employer abroad? Iโ€™ve used wire transfers and PayPal, but come to realize there are lots of fees some more obvious than others.

For example, with PayPal, often there is an international transfer fee of 3.4% or more, then on top of that PayPal takes a 2.5% spread on the currency exchange rate.

Heads up! Opening Charles Schwab account abroad

by @ahawkins 9yr 9 years ago  | 13 comments

I recently opened a Charles Schwab checking account because Iโ€™m sick of paying ATM fees abroad (been about 5 years now so it adds up). I did this online while I was in India. Everything went off fine opening the account online until a week or so later when I received a letter saying my account needed to be verified. No problem I thought, call the people up and answer a few questions. Wrong! Since I opened my account from a non-US IP, my SSN had been flagged. This requires in person verification! There is no way around this now. I asked if I VPNโ€™d with a US IP and tried to open a new account would it work. The CSR said no, my SSN is now flagged and the only way for me to get an account at Charles Schwab is to go branch and verify my identify in person.

So this is word of warning for any US people opening bank accounts while abroad. I suggest you VPN to get a US IP when opening any account. Probably with a less well known VPN as well.

Good luck out there!

I gave up my job/place/stuff and am abroad. What should I do next?

by @mainlydana 10yr 10 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi, all

Forgive me, as am not one for brevity. Like so many, Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot about being a digital nomad, and find myself in a good position to go for it (better position than most who are considering it, I think), but am still not sureโ€ฆ how/where to start.

Background: In July 2013 I left my home country for long-term travel for the first time. I found out, though I was already 35 at the time, that I was still eligible for a working holiday visa for a handful of countries. I was accepted to New Zealand. So, I quit my job, gave up my apartment, sold or gave away what I could, and have some stuff stored with family. I spent three months in SE Asia then 13 months in New Zealand. Though my background is communications, in NZ I worked in tourism/hospitality which was a fun and refreshingโ€”if low-payingโ€”change of scenery.

Now Iโ€™m in Cambodia working in communications for an NGO for six months. I only receive a small monthly stipend but Iโ€™d always been curious about NGO work and with the low cost of living here plus some savings built up I thought, why not?

Not content to watch my nest egg slowly drain, Iโ€™ve been looking into some freelance work on the side, mostly in writing which seems to be the most common freelance work available based on my background/experience. I also thought now would be an ideal testing ground for freelance work due to my savings plus low overhead

My NGO gig ends in June and Iโ€™d love to stay in Cambodia longer, but not overly keen on the 9-to-5 and would love an alternative (either as a telecommuting employee, freelancing, or a mix of both). Even though I made the hardest choice in 2013 with quitting my job and all that and Iโ€™m now based somewhere where I can live off a low income for awhile, I donโ€™t know how or where to start.

Due to the โ€œsabbaticalโ€ (ie. travel then time in NZ) and in my last few jobs not doing much writing outside of social media content, my writing portfolio is quite dated, which is not helping prove my writing abilities. Also, being in-house so long, I donโ€™t have many contacts that could become potential clients. I actually prefer editing, but the consensus out there seems to be that if the writing is good, then an editor is not needed so thereโ€™s less editing work as far as I can tell.

Oh, I should add my comms experience has been in the not-for-profit sector predominantly, so no experience writing marketing- or sales-type copy designed to sell products or services (though certainly willing to try). And one last thing: Iโ€™m not an overly confident person, so selling myself does not come easy which is certainly not helping in trying to get work. Some days I feel defeated and that this concept of being a digital nomad is just not attainable for someone like me.

If you read all that, thanks! Tips / advice / suggestions / thoughts / slap upside the head?
