Can you give me some examples of non-digital jobs for nomads?

by @workingtraveller 10yr  | 16 comments

I am doing research into what skills are good for getting work anywhere as you travel - other than working on line. So like craftsmen, a hairdresserโ€ฆ people using skills that are not available locally and so having them as a traveller is an advantage to getting work in the places your are planning on visiting. So, any one working their way around the world and not working on your laptop?

I used to work as a spot operator for some show-touring, playing in some nice cities in Europe and China. The schedule was fast but I got plenty of time as the show was only in the evening. The advantage is that flights and hotels are covered, the down side is that your are not location independent as you need to follow the show.

Thereโ€™s quite a bit of work for instructors in diving, sailing, rock-climbing, etc. At least for diving, you need certifications. Cruise ships and resorts hire musicians, cooks, serving staff, โ€ฆ

Lots of travellers teach English or some other language. Here is an overview article:

Iโ€™m a professional speaker. Currently, I have around 80 bookings per year, and the fee is high enough to cover airline cost, at least from the same part of the world. Iโ€™ll be riding around Europe on my motorcycle, and the riding to where the client is, or part the bike at the hotel or airport, go do the seminar, and then fly back and continue riding. Iโ€™ll share experiences on my blog along the way, on http://happyways.com

A friend lived in a hostel where one guy was ex-military (one of those hardcore bits, I know nothing about military) and he charged people to โ€œhang outโ€ with him while he trained. I think the โ€œhang outโ€ bit was absolve himself of any need to get personal trainer certifications and from any responsibility if people got hurt!

Iโ€™ve heard of several:

Tourism careers:

  • Cruise lines
  • Airplane staff
  • Tour guide (great if youโ€™re bilingual)

Teaching

  • TEFL
  • Can teach uni students conversational English
  • Can teach anything anywhere, really.

Other:

  • Chef - Other than the stereotypical sense of being a chef and travelling around. Someone was reportedly doing โ€œpop up restaurantsโ€ of his home cuisine in his airbnb apartments. If you do 3 course menus at โ‚ฌ50/head for 10 people, it quickly adds up and do 3 a week, it will add up.
  • Hairdressing - some people reportedly charge in hostels $5/hair cut etc and it can add up if youโ€™re fast and live cheaply

Think a little outside of the box and you may be able to do it.

I know a stand-up comedian who books comedy gigs in the places he travels! He does have an online presence, but that mainly serves to showcase his portfolio and show potential venues that heโ€™s not a total unknown.

A couple other friends of mine are an acupuncturist and a masseuse. Sometimes itโ€™s not that these skills arenโ€™t available in the destination; itโ€™s just a matter of getting the word out there and/or offering good prices for new clients.

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 5yr 5 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari , Italy by @mitch_dina 5yr 5 years ago  | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

What's the best mobile-data option in New Zealand for nomads?

Is Three's 'Go Roam' package any good for British nomads?

by @alexnapierholland 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Hey, Three in the UK offer a โ€˜Go Roamโ€™ package that - at first glance - looks good for nomads.

It essentially promises data use abroad, up to 12GB,

Iโ€™d link to Threeโ€™s FAQ for Go Roam, but as Iโ€™m a new user I canโ€™t.

Bali/Indonesia and Australia are both included, which are top destinations for me.

Thailand is not, which may be annoying.

I could do with a new iPhone before I leave for Bali again in January and as Iโ€™ve been launching a new business, am a bit short on cash.

Unsure if this is a good solution, or if it makes more sense to sit-it-out on my iPhone 6 until I can buy an iPhone XS Max with cash and stick whatever SIM I want in it.

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Which is the warmest city in Europe with the highest number of tech jobs?

by @omarmohameddev 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

I am currently living in Cologne, Germany, with my wife, but we are looking for to continue our slow-nomadism path towards a warmer city, possibly close to the sea, where I can easily get a new job and offer a set of well-know, tech companies/startups. Any idea?

I was considering Madrid and Valencia, but also Nice looks very attempting even if I am scared that there are not enough tech companies could become hard find/change job in the long term.

Thanks everyone in advance!

Where is the best place to live in London for digital nomads?

in London , United Kingdom by @nicholasdnewell 8yr 8 years ago  | 35 comments

Iโ€™m moving to London for a year and would like to know where Iโ€™ll have the best โ€œaccessโ€ to other digital nomads as well as facilities such as coworking spaces. If possible (I know itโ€™s asking a lot for London), Iโ€™d prefer to live somewhere cheap (a relative term I know, but Iโ€™m looking to spend no more than ยฃ1,000), but still have the aforementioned items. Any help, guidance, or just simple insider advice would be much appreciated! Thank you =)

Bali vs. Chiang Mai for digital nomads?

in Chiang Mai , Thailand by @snu6ew 8yr 8 years ago  | 16 comments

My girlfriend and I started our DN life this March and went straight to Chiang Mai because of itโ€™s ease of living. We love it. CM is great โ€“ we got a scooter for 2700 THB, a nice apartment for 8000 THB all in, we get our laundry done for 50 THB, eat out at nice places every day for less than 100 THB etc. Arriving here needed nearly no preparation โ€“ it just worked out all by itself.

We are still on tight budget and donโ€™t want to give up much of CMโ€™s quality of life but we want to see other places and we are now thinking about what could be our next destination. We are not really willing and able to spend more than what we spend now. Bali seems to be a good place according to what you all wrote.

How does it compare to Chiang Mai or Thailand in general?
CM can get very hot and we often acknowledge that we should have chosen an apartment with a pool here. Can I rent something in Bali for a few months with a pool for less than 250 USD?

Are there any Nomad-houses or similar projects at the moment that make it easy to connect to other people?

We donโ€™t really hang out in co-working spaces, more in cafรฉs. We source products in China and sell them to customers in Europe through e-commerce.

Any tips or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are the Philippines good for solo digital nomads?

in Philippines by @lopesrosanna 8yr 8 years ago  | 16 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™ve been wanting to visit the Philippines for a while. I need a stable connection to make skype calls and get my work done. I have some questions:

  • If Iโ€™d spend a total of 2/ 3 months there, and would stay minimum 3 weeks and max 1.5 months in one place, which would you advise me to visit?
  • Any coworking spaces in those places? How is the Wifi availability in cafeโ€™s/ restaurants?
  • Places to absolutely avoid?
  • Is it safe for a woman alone?
  • Is it easy to meet other nomads there?
  • Is it easy to mingle with locals?
  • What was your average spending per month?
  • Best time to visit?
  • Any major events that I should experience?
  • Howโ€™s the food?
  • Any other Philippines tips?

I know some of these questions are relative, but please give me your own honest opinion and advice.

Thanks!
Rosanna

What's next for remote work and digital nomads?

by @levelsio 8yr 8 years ago  | 21 comments

Weโ€™ve seen A LOT happen over the past 2 years. Digital nomads have gone pretty mainstream and about half of my normal friends in some way or another travel a lot and are starting to work remotely for their companies now. Over half of startups have people working remotely.

The housing problem that we talked about back then? Lots of companies have popped up to try coliving projects and thereโ€™s now countless fixed and temporary retreats around the world.

I tried to add my bit by adding the social grid to the digital nomad scene letting people meet each other on here, organizing meetups and building out this site.

Butโ€ฆwhatโ€™s next? What can we do/organize/build now?

What are good US-based banks for digital nomads?

by @ramblurr 8yr 8 years ago  | 24 comments

For some of us maintaining a US Based Bank is just a necessity. Either we never pick up residency abroad, or have a US based business for which a US based account makes life easy.

Purely online personal banking is a growing trend. Schwab has a great checking account that reimburses ATM fees and has no international fees, Simple is a new online only bank with tons of great features (though not so great for nomads abroad).

Anyone know of similar services for small business online?

Features Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Business accounts (not a human name on the account)
  • Great website experience
  • Photo Check deposit
  • Cheap / below-average transfer and wire fees
  • Cheap fees / minimum balance requirements
I prefer storing my cash in personal accounts or investment accounts
  • Free international use of cards
