Cost of Living in Antananarivo

I worked for about a week in Tana and backpacked around Madagascar without working for a while after that. I can highly recommend visiting Madagascar if you're an intrepid traveler, but it's not comfortable for a nomad lifestyle. You can make it work - I got decent enough 4G with a cheap local mobile plan, and there are a few decent Airbnbs, guesthouses, restaurants and cafes that are all quite cheap by Western standards. But Tana is not a particularly nice place - poverty is high even for the region, petty crime is not uncommon, and infrastructure is very poor (even well-off locals I met couldn't get running water in their homes because the local utility is dysfunctional). On top of that, there's not much to do (a few great museums, and a bit of nightlife) and it's hard to meet people if you don't speak French (even then, most locals only speak Malagasy). It's a shame because there's a lot of history and culture here to explore, and if spruced up it could be really nice given the beautiful old homes and scenic hilly landscape. I'd say do Madagascar as a backpacking trip - or better yet, a road trip - and hit Tana on your way in / out of the national parks and beaches, but I wouldn't want to attempt nomading here.
