Costa Rica or other suggestions in SA for a single woman travelling?

in Costa Rica by @ruthk 9yr  | 14 comments

Hi guys,
Iโ€™ve decided I want to take a break from my way of living and go nomad for a few months (at least). I do music so WiFi is not my main concern, all I need is good inspiration and nice people around me.

I am looking for a mid-cheap / safe place, preferably having a nice beach around. Iโ€™d also like to socialize with people from different cultures. Meet and make new friends.
I got sick from living in Europe/US, so Iโ€™d rather be far away from these continents.

My choices have come down do Costa Rica, but Iโ€™m reading some good stuff about Medellin, Mexico, Panama. Iโ€™ve spend quite some time in Asia traveling as well (I love Bali and Koh Lanta), but Iโ€™ve never been to South America, so Iโ€™d rather go in that direction.

What would you suggest?

Buenos Aires is about a 6 hour bus ride from the beach and has a huge city feel. I donโ€™t think thatโ€™d be the right fit for you. Iโ€™m heading to Costa Rica next week and thereโ€™s a new coworking space in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Tamarindo is touristy so the cost of living is a little higher there than other spots in the country.

One of my nomad friends loved her time in Florianรณpolis, Brazil and ended up staying there way longer than sheโ€™d initially planned. It is a vacation spot for Brazilians and doesnโ€™t have the safety problems of Rio.

I am a female who has traveled alone for many years (over a decade). Some of my favorite โ€œsafeโ€ places are:

-Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Varied international residents, nightlife, activities, yoga, beaches and no car needed to get around. Iโ€™ve also heard good things about Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta.

-Costa Rica: CR has gotten more dangerous for everyone (not just women) in recent years. But the country is still quite a gem. My favorite places are Mal Pais/Santa Teresa for a younger, hip, international crown. For nature and solitude, the Osa Peninsula and surrounding area: Puerto Jimenez, Mata Palo area and Pavones (there is a cool place called the Yoga Farm there).

-Puerto Rico: The west and nw coast of the island is very popular with expats; itโ€™s a tight knit, diverse crew that grows every year. Surfers, celebs and health/wellness types are all attracted to PR. Itโ€™s also a good jumping off point for visiting places in the Caribbean.

-Bocas del Toro, Panama: Fun, beautiful, laid back place, especially good option if internet isnโ€™t a priority. Pretty safe and striking distance from Panama City if you need a dose of culture and city life.

-Note on Medellรญn: This is an okay destination for a short term visit, but for a Western woman, there are better places to stay long term.

Places to probably avoid:

  • Honduras: Unsafe
  • El Sal: Unsafe
  • Guatemala: Mixed; beautiful place but better to travel with at least 1 other person
  • Nicaragua: Mixed opinion - Overall Nica is pretty safe but I wouldnโ€™t necessarily recommend it as a great place that stands out necessarily for a Western woman to meet other artists and expats. However, San Juan del Sur is a bit of an anomaly with a diverse population and many tourists, expats and backpackers. That would be one possibility, then pop over to Ometepe and the Corn Islands for something different. If internet isnโ€™t a big issue then that makes it more appealing because it is very affordable. I would recommend checking it out if you spend time in Costa Rica.

I lived/ traveled solo for 3 months in Costa Rica earlier this year, spending most of my time near Puerto Viejo. I liked it, and itโ€™s safe enough as long as youโ€™re not wandering isolated roads at night โ€“ they do have their crime there too, itโ€™s not all serene paradise as the tourist industry makes it out to be. But Costa Rica is not cheap if you want to be in or near a town with services and wifi. They have US prices, basically, in a developing country, though the Caribbean side where I was is a bit cheaper (and cooler, though very humid). Avoid staying in Limรณn or Cahuita for safety reasons, though they both make great day trips.

Medellin is the best option for safety, comfort and city vibe. Lifestyle is amazing because of the current exchange and the city is world class.

I traveled through panama and Central America through the first half of the year and I found it to be too sketchy. you have to stick to beach towns where tourism is better managed otherwise its always Risky. Bocas de Toro is a beautiful spot and puerto viejo in Costa rica is not far from there. same with the pacific beaches in Costa Rica.

But for a longer stay Medellin is one of the best options in the planet, by far. Great Weather, Cheap, Entertaining & world class everything. Nothing beats it for getting work done.

During peak tourist season (winter), you will find travelers from all over the world in Costa Rica. There has been an upshot in burning man culture inspired music festivals throughout the country in the last 5+ years, and a lot of places that were formerly very remote are starting to become a lot more modernized. Check out Puerto Viejo on the east coast, and Dominical on the west coast.

Lived in Sayulita most of last yearโ€ฆ In Tamarindo Costa Rica now through Feb.

Mexico is much less expensiveโ€ฆ And has much more of a music cultureโ€ฆ And better food! Sayulita is quite awesome!

Costa Rica has stronger nature and a very international vibeโ€ฆ I hear French, German, Italian, English and Spanish being spoken every day.

Heya! Iโ€™m also a solo lady traveler and I highly recommend Sayulita, Mexico. Itโ€™s a small town, lots of yoga and surfing and beaches. Itโ€™s affordable. Super sunny. And a huge international community of interesting people from all over the world. It is, hands down, the best place Iโ€™ve been in Latin America.

Iโ€™m currently in Colombia and Iโ€™ve been pretty disappointed so far mostly because of the harassment and cultural perception of women. I know not every female nomad has experienced that (Iโ€™ve talked to several who adore Colombia), but Iโ€™ve found it exhausting and Iโ€™ve heard others say the same.

Cuzco, Peru, is also a super cool town. Really beautiful and interesting. I donโ€™t know much about the community there, as I was there with a giant group many many years ago, but itโ€™s somewhere Iโ€™d look into if I was thinking about South America for the first time.

Good luck!

Iโ€™ve been in Medellin for 2 months and really like it. Very safe place, even for women travelling alone - according to the ones I have talked to and what I have noticed. Also very cheap. The Col peso has been beaten down 30% to 40%, so many things are discounted that much if you exchanging dollars or euros.

Going to Panama end of the month for a week to check it out - also it is a very cheap flight from MDE. Planning on Cartegena in Jan, but from what I have found it - definitely more expensive than Medellin. Santa Marta next door is cheaper and less touristy. Also a trip to Leticia / Amazon river is affordable - round trip flights $200-ish.
One thing - not many people speak Englishโ€ฆso I am taking Spanish lessons. But I have gotten around pretty with with Google Translate on my phone and Uber English at the beginning of my trip. Now I am comfortable jumping in a taxi - they are everywhere, just raise you arm and most trips are $2 or under.

Iโ€™d like to counter that. Thereโ€™s big issues with constant catcalling, harassment in Medellin and the rest of Colombia. Itโ€™s their culture but itโ€™s rough for female travelers. Iโ€™ve heard lots of stories and was just there with my girlfriend and it was pretty much a multiple times per day occurance.

People are really nice though, but somebody needs to kill that macho shit, itโ€™s 2015!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @levelsioisacunt 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 5yr 5 years ago  | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

by @rose_davis 5yr 5 years ago  | 7 comments

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). Iโ€™ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but Iโ€™d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities Iโ€™m considering:

  • Quito, Ecuador
  • Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Cartagena, Columbia
  • Antigua, Guatemala
  • San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Fast/easily accessible internet
  • Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
  • Safe for women
  • Some sort of spiritual community (Iโ€™m also a yoga teacher)
  • Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? Iโ€™m also completely open to other recommendations.

Thanks!
Rose

Here is the itinerary of our trip to Costa Rica; what would you recommend?

in Costa Rica by @nomad4 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi everybody,

for those who read us in the past, we made some changes to our plan for this winter.
We decided for several reasons to postpone our trip to SEA, and decided to leave for a month in Costa Rica instead. Weโ€™ll still be travelling with our 2 kids and will need to work a little as well.

This is our itinerary for the month. 39

For those whoโ€™ve been there, how long do you think we should stay at each place?
We were planning roughly:

  • 1 week in Tamarindo/Nosara
  • 2-3 nights in Monteverde
  • 2-3 night closer to the Arenal volcano
  • 2-3 night in Quepos
  • Uvita for undetermined period of time

Do you think thereโ€™s a place (among the ones we cited or else) we should consider to stay a little longer?

Thanks

What are great outdoor activities in Salt Lake City?

in Salt Lake City , United States by @secondlife 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi,

Considering a trip to Salt Lake City area, with a side trip to Moab, UT. Thinking of renting a Class B RV (Sprinter van size) to test out Van Life.

Looking for any suggestions/input on:

  1. Organizations that might be interested in a presentation on โ€œYour website is more than a Brochureโ€. (Informative, not a sales pitch)
  2. Outdoor activities within 4h (see below)
  3. Best places to meet people interested in Tech and the outdoor activities.

Looking to do some easy to moderate:

  1. Mountain biking
  2. Cross country Skiing
  3. Rock Climbing

Wondering what months I could do each. Iโ€™d love to do a late September trip if itโ€™s not too late.

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas 5yr 5 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?
