Does anyone know of great beaches in Eastern Europe outside of Schengen?

Looking for a place besides Croatia in Eastern Europe to go to the beachโ€ฆ any ideas? Looking for a place that is exciting and fun and not too sleepy.

I LOVED Sarajevo. I ended up doubling the time I planned to stay there and I canโ€™t wait to go back. I could see living there for a while, easily.

I second @wanderingdev. Albanis is a good shout, everyone raves about them. Iโ€™m planning to go this year and a friend of mine stayed in Sarandรซ for a month or so and loved it.

Montenegro is good too, and has a nice mix of old town charm and party (if you want that).

Have fun in Sarajevo. Itโ€™s my most favourite city in the world.

If you get a chance, take a walk up to the White Fortress about an hour before sunset and climb out onto the ledge. Once ramadan starts tomorrow, youโ€™ll hear the canon fire at sunset. Itโ€™s a fabulous view!

Albania. I didnโ€™t get to the beach but everyone raves about them. apparently theyโ€™re some of the cleanest given the low tourism and itโ€™s dead cheap.

Montenegro, Bulgaria and Romania. Bulgaria and Romania are outside Schengen, even though they are in the EU.

@diananoel 10yr

Iโ€™m originally from Constanta which is a beach side city in Romania. This is what I can tell you about Romania and Bulgaria, as far as beach resorts go:
Romania
Pros:

  • very exciting, especially if you go to Constanta;
  • a lot of fun activities to take part in;
  • decent waterpark for an eastern european country;
  • a lot of stuff to see around the city (ex: roman ruins and other historical landmarks);
  • itโ€™s close to the Danube Delta (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/588) which is a UNESCO heritage site so you can visit that as well;
  • most young people speak english; if you know french you can probably get help from older people as well;
  • romanians get really excited when foreign tourists ask for their help and will go out of their way to assist you; thereโ€™s a strong chance you make some new friends; try asking some local college students if they would be willing to show you the sites or act a guide for a day or more - some will be glad they get a chance to exercise their foreign language skills and say yes.

Cons:

  • very expensive taking into account the quality of the services being offered
  • probably going to encounter a lot of beggars or people how will try to scam you in some way (donโ€™t give out money to anyone, theyโ€™ll stick to you like the plague afterwards)
  • loud and crowded during the summer
  • you will need to rent a car since the public transport will get really annoying fast + the taxi drivers will try to scam you if you donโ€™t get a local guide to help you out :slight_smile: if you get a hotel room in mamaia, you can get to most places on foot;
  • I know this will sound very racist but donโ€™t trust gypsies or anyone who looks kinda ragged. Some will have good intentions, sure, but most will not. Better to be safe than sorry. You might wake up to find your wallet missing or your phone.
  • donโ€™t buy food from street vendors (people who walk around selling corn on the cob or apples or whatever), stick to things that look like a legitimate business.
  • donโ€™t drink the tap water - the water purification system, in Constanta at least, uses a lot of chloride. Romanians are used to this but I had some friend from other countries that left with very upset stomachs because they did not listen to this warning.

Iโ€™ve never really been to a beach resort in Bulgaria but this is what people who have vacationed there told me:
Bulgaria
Pros:

  • Great quality/price ratio
  • Great service
  • Heard itโ€™s very clean
  • Stuff to visit
    Cons:
  • Apparently cars get stolen a lot, or at least thatโ€™s what every single person Iโ€™ve ever mentioned vacationing in Bulgaria has told me.
  • Same gypsy problem
  • Not great english speakers ( this may just be because they donโ€™t seem to like romanians and just pretend not to understand)
  • Great for relaxation, but not for partying
  • Need to stick to the areas intented for tourists as the rest is somewhat impoverished

Hope this helps!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

How to ship bikes from US to Europe?

by @ld 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,
Iโ€™m preparing to travel again to Europe, but this time I want to bring our bikes. 2 road bikes. Iโ€™ll be traveling from USA to the Milan or Rome airport.

Iโ€™d appreciate hearing your thoughts, experience and tips on traveling with a bike. I plan on being fairly stationary with our location and staying in one spot for 2-3 months, then (hopefully train) to another spot for 3 months, etc. So itโ€™s the initial international flight Iโ€™m most concerned about. But realistically, I think a regional flight will be inevitable with the bikes, too.

I know a bike box will be huge and we will have to break down the bike, thankfully our bikes are fairly light weight. Iโ€™m expecting it to be a huge painโ€ฆbut I think the reward of having a good bike to roam around with will be invaluable. Especially since we will be staying in rural areas and donโ€™t want to rent a car.

General range of cost?

Anyone bring their bike and glad they did? โ€ฆWish they didnโ€™t?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 5yr 5 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 5yr 5 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

SIM to use in Eastern Europe

by @itinerantdev 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Over the next few weeks Iโ€™m visiting:

  • Prague 4 days
  • Bratislava 12 days
  • Berlin 7 days
  • Budapest 60 days

I am British and was assuming I would use my giff gaff sim as that has free EU roaming.

But I have been in Mexico for six weeks and giff gaff emailed and said if I didnโ€™t use my sim in the UK soon they would start charging their normal expensive roaming rates.

Soโ€ฆ Can anyone recommend a pre-pay data only sim/package I can use in all of these countries? Ideally which I can pick up in Prague?

What's the best warm destinations in Europe in the winter?

by @jammingsloth 6yr 6 years ago  | 33 comments

Planning ahead for the winter. Iโ€™ll be in Spain in the Fall and want to go someplace warm for the winter in or near Europe, but not Schengen. Was first thinking Cape Town, but the internet is slow and it is very far. Was also thinking:
Israel - but airbnb listings are very pricey.
Morocco?
Turkey - maybe a little chilly.

Any other suggestions?

Staying outside major cities?

by @malaclypse 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

My question is about the actual experience of staying outside of major cities, as well as where/how (on this site or elsewhere) to search to find questions and discussions about the same.

Sometimes I like being in the big city, but sometimes I like being away from it. For many people with โ€œregular jobsโ€ you have little choice but to be in a big metro area since thatโ€™s where the jobs are; for me, part of the appeal of considering DN is sometimes being able to work someplace quiet, remote, secluded and beautiful- rather than a concrete jungle.

Iโ€™m curious whoโ€™s actually done stuff like this. Because while it sounds great, I could also imagine all sorts of unpredictable problems that might not be an issue when one is way off the beaten path that wouldnโ€™t come up if one were in a big metro area.

Advice on phone plans? 1 year in Europe

by @larsheather 6yr 6 years ago  | 8 comments

Weโ€™re Americans planning to be in Europe for all of 2020 - approx. 90 days in each country, and alternating Schengen and non-Schengen. Our destinations will likely include four of these: Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Romania, and Spain.
Can anyone give us advice on cell phones? We would prefer to keep our current (U.S) numbers if at all possible. We donโ€™t anticipate making many local calls, but will phone the U.S. about once a week. Weโ€™ll use our phones for internet quite often.
Any advice for our situation would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather and Lars

Nomad in Europe and buying a car

by @toob 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Weโ€™re nomadโ€™ing around Europe, living in places for a few months at a time. It would be super convenient to own a car for this, but we havenโ€™t found a good option to buy and keep one without being a steady registered resident in any country. Every time we move weโ€™d have to basically change number plates et cetera.

Does anyone have any experience with this and has helpful advice?

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 6yr 6 years ago  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Andorra as a break from the schengen?

Nomads who bounce around Europe: Has anyone tried to use Andorra as their non-schengen time? Iโ€™ve read that you donโ€™t get a stamp at the border, so Iโ€™m guessing if you wanted to do this youโ€™d need to go to a govt office for a stamp? Is this even possible?
