Favorite towns in Mexico (and near it)?

in Mexico by @azurio 8yr  | 5 comments

Hey guys!

We love Mexico. Weโ€™re excited to find outstanding towns to live in for 2-12 months at a time. Weโ€™re also open to Central American gems.

We especially appreciate learning about those smaller towns that are lesser known but amazing. Personal favorites!

Here are some of our interests:

  • a paradise vibe: ocean, lush greenery, vibrant arts, and/or old town charm
  • at least 3 Mbps download speed
  • great cost of living
  • considerable expat and retiree crowd
  • not too much of an urban city โ€” though a smaller town outside a city can work
  • a bit touristy is okay

Here are lesser-discussed towns that caught our eye โ€” weโ€™d love impressions of these and more that come to mind:

  • Huatulco
  • Ixtapa
  • Guanajuato
  • And more?

Thanks so much, guys!

Hi there! Iโ€™ve been living in Puerto Vallarta for 9 years now! Beautiful beach city with awesome beach/surfy villages like Punta Mita, Sayulita, and San Pancho less than an hour to the North. Downtown Vallarta has Telmexโ€™s Fiber Internet now and Vallarta CoWork has two 100mb lines - so thereโ€™s definitely access to great internet.

Weโ€™ve been in Guanajuato since January and love it. The city offers the old town charm and arts that you guys are looking for. Download speeds are 3-4 Mbps, but rarely faster and Iโ€™ve yet to see a coworking space in time (Cafe Tal is sufficient).

We are a family of 4 (baby and toddler) and spend about $1500/m - key to keeping costs down is to find a place once youโ€™ve arrived. Youโ€™ll pay $750-1000/m for a 2 bedroom when booked online, verses the $250-400 youโ€™ll pay in person.

The expat crowd here is retirees and a few younger travelers. Most seem to be in their 50s or 60s, liberal, and here for the weather and arts. (Cervantino is a huge festival in Oct) GTO is a college town, so the local population is quite young and well educated. Safety has never been a concern, day or night, and the tourist crowds are really concentrated down in the centro squares. Many of the tourists are other Mexicans, nothing close to the crowds youโ€™ll get in SMA.

I tried coworking in Merida, not the typical type of place for coworking but is worth trying , it is safe, clean and very cultural. The centre gets many tourists and after two weeks I had tried most top restaurants but I loved it.

Expat crowd is very active with French & German meet-ups. Easy to explore nearby cities which are lovely.

It was amazing, mostly beacause I stayed in a an airbnb with pool and two rooms for myself for 50 euro/ night.

PS. I am Mexican.

I lived in Ajijic 8 months. I just left a few weeks ago. I loved it there. The absence of young expats was nice. The retired expats have their own vibe and everyone is friendly. Plus, itโ€™s 30 minutes from Guadalajara intl airport on the biggest lake in Mexico at 5,000 feet elevation, surrounded by mountains. I may end up settling there. The food isnโ€™t great though. I had expectations of good Mexican food being in Mexico but it was a bunch of western food, not much of it healthy, more just standard American diet type food. Lots of Italian restaurants. Internet is fine.

Are restaurants, cafes and malls working in Mexico City taking into account COVID situation?

in Mexico by @thateverdmitriy 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Where are the nomads in Mexico City?

in Mexico City , Mexico by @shellyfish 5yr 5 years ago  | 9 comments

I just landed as a n00b digital nomad in Mexico City, and I am wonderingโ€ฆ Where are all the international digital nomads hiding around here? I have been to several coworking spaces (Selina etc.) only to find A LOT of local Mexican workers and businesses. Donโ€™t get me wrong, that is all fine, but I was hoping to meet some international nomads! Any advice?

Cheap Cities in Mexico & South America with Fastest Wifi

in Mexico by @jnomad30 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi Guys,
Iโ€™m planning out my next stops after leaving Medellin, Colombia soon where I can hunker down and get some work done with fast wifi and cheap living. Will be in Mexico first so starting a look there but wondering if coming back down to South America might make more sense?
My main concerns are budget and fast enough wifi for me to work from home. Other considerations are some nomad community (ideally also some English speaking expats as my Spanish is basic) and warm enough weather.
Thanks in advance!

Suggestions for home base for 10 months in Mexico or Panama next year?

in Mexico by @we_are_escaping 6yr 6 years ago  | 14 comments

Weโ€™re researching places to use as a home base next year, and are leaning towards Mexico or Panama for 10 months (with 1 week โ€œvacationsโ€ to explore surrounding countries)

But, I want to settle some place where the infrastructure is good enough for fast, reliable internet - fast enough to run live webinars without worrying that Iโ€™ll be S.O.L due to internet issues when itโ€™s time to go live.

And ideally, Iโ€™d like to be on the coastโ€ฆ I like to have ocean/beach access without the need for a drive.

And not in a malaria zone (just saying, since Panama in particular has many areas that Iโ€™d rule out simply due to the need for malaria prevention meds)โ€ฆ itโ€™s one thing to take that stuff for a few weeks long trip, but I donโ€™t want to take it for months on end.

Thoughts?

Thanks for reading all

Best European Ski Towns?

by @matthewhallcom 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

Looking to spend around 6 weeks somewhere in Europe this winter skiing and working. Donโ€™t need a big tech community but care more about it being affordable and having at least half decent skiing.

So far I have heard good things about Les Deux Alpes, France and Bansko, Bulgaria.

Project Fi (and AT&T Roaming) in Canada

in Canada by @danicatalina 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

Going on 3-6 month #vanlife trip throughout the USA and Canada, and setting up my data connectivity to be able to work on the road. Without going into depth (unless you ask), Iโ€™m trying to figure out options for cell service as a US citizen in Canada, and looking for everyoneโ€™s input:
(1) Project Fi: any experience or feedback on how Fi works in Canada? Iโ€™ll be almost exclusively in British Columbia.
(2) US Carriers: any feedback on AT&T or Verizon?

Thanks, all!

Mexico City, Medellin or Buenos Aires?

in Buenos Aires , Argentina by @rayhanv 7yr 7 years ago  | 7 comments

So Iโ€™m taking the plunge and will be going nomad in less than 3 months from now!

My situation is that I just started a semi-remote contract with a startup that has a good chance to go fully remote in 3 months time if all goes well.
I will be heading over to Chang Mai at some point, but have decided to do a month or two in South America first, just so that the time difference isnโ€™t so crazy while dealing with the team back home (skype/ hangout meetings in the morning etc)

The current cities on my radar are Mexico City, Medellin and Buenos Ares.
Basically, I am looking for a place that is has a relatively low cost of living, is safe for expats, has good internet and doesnโ€™t have too much of a language barrier.

If anyone has lived in any of those cities ( or other nomad friendly spots in SA/CA), would love to get your thoughts on which place would be ideal for a 1-2 month stay based on my situation.
Thanks!

Quaint small towns/villages in Italy and/or France

in Italy by @theunisk 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Any recommendations for a few weeks stay in a small, quiet town or village somewhere in Italy/France during summer ? Open to any setting, by the seaside, in the mountains or the countryside - Iโ€™d like to get a feel for local life (outside the cities) in a charming place.
Having hiking routes available nearby would be a bonus, but not required.
Internet speed will not be very important, so that does not need to be taken into consideration.
Iโ€™ll likely be doing both Italy and France, so suggestions for both would be great.

Which USA towns to experience rural South?

by @srg_b 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Iโ€™m going on a rock festival to Louisiana in October. From there Iโ€™d like to visit maybe 3 places and be gone by new year. What Iโ€™m looking for are dreamy rural towns ~50k in size that havenโ€™t changed much and will allow me to briefly experience how it is living in the South/SE USA. Another thing is since Iโ€™m coming in Fall, what will the weather be? Where Iโ€™m coming from, November is all rain, clouds, winds and 10 degrees (so the crappiest weather possible). Are my filters yielding any results? Thanks!

If luggage space (and weight) was not a problem, what items will you travel with that you can't carry now?

by @carlosaave 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

I know that when you become a digital nomad you have to become somehow a minimalist. But if luggage space and weight were not problems. I would like to know what items would you miss traveling with. I certainly would carry. A guitar, a set of good knives, a pair of Hiking shoes, (they are sooo bulky), a good camping tent.

What about you?
