Fortaleza is a budget-friendly destination with good food and beautiful beaches, especially around tourist-oriented zones like Meireles and Praia do Futuro. Central areas are generally considered safe for residents and visitors, even for those with luxury possessions, though petty crime like theft can occur and should be guarded against in public places. Experiences outside the main neighborhoods can vary; the city has a reputation for danger in outlying areas, which are best avoided by tourists.
The city has a warm climate year-round, with daytime temperatures around 32°C and cooler nights. This heat affects daily routines, with most activity happening early in the morning or after sunset. Beach clubs and shopping malls are common daytime escapes. While Fortaleza offers a calmer, more affordable lifestyle compared to other Brazilian cities, it lacks the cultural variety and visual impact of destinations like Rio or Salvador.
In terms of tourism, Fortaleza can feel small with limited nearby attractions. Long travel times to notable spots like Jericoacoara make extended plans necessary. Despite these downsides, many long-term visitors enjoy the laid-back vibe and low living costs, making it a practical location for retirees or remote workers looking for beachside living on a budget.

4y living here. I love this city. Walking by beira mar beach on sunset is my favorite activity. It was recently renewed, gigantic walking paths with several bars. The landscape is not as dramatic as rio, also less interesting, smaller, but I love how much more chill it is, for close to half the price.
A bit too hot for most (but better than all other northeast capitals, all year round 32C during the day, 27 at night), so just like Thailand during the day you do beach club or shopping mall or work, then go outside by sunset. I love crocobeach beach club; many will prefer orbita blue for the trendy/party vibes. If you like good service while on the beach, Fortaleza wins versus rio.
Despite having 4mil habitants and touristy, it feels small. Not enough novelty for more than a few days. Also not many things to do nearby: cumbuco is a kite surf hotspot 45min away; jericoacoara is amazing, but 5h away.
As a male (and brazillian), in 4y I can't remember a single situation where I felt danger - so much that I felt ok to buy a luxury car. Of course I live in the main area (Meireles), but I do go daily to Fatima, Praia do Futuro, Iracema, Aldeota, Cocó and never felt not safe. Check travellers youtube videos. I'd be careful using macbooks outside; a couple times I did on the pool area on crocobeach though, and I see a lot of people doing it on cafes. Most of the violence happens on far suburbs 20km away, where drug gangs fight for territory. A lot of beggers though. There's a review here talking about rats and bad health, that's nonsense. Also beira mar and praia do futuro water color is a nice green, no odors, just beautiful. Just check on youtube.
All in all, it's a beautiful cheap place to spend some time. Way better than other northeast capitals, although Salvador is more interesting. A shame it is a bit far (rio, sao paulo, 3h flight), and jericoacoara, despite maybe cooler than pipa, is very far (5h by car).

Does not worth it, way too dangerous and not so beautiful. My grandpa lives there and I went to visit him on my vacation and it was terrible, very dangerous, beaches in downtown are super polluted, I couldn't find a reason to indicate it.

You gotta be kidding me.. i lived in Fortaleza for 5 years. Safety is almost non existent, only in 1-2 limited neighborhoods. There are not so many things to do in the city and you can only walk around beiramar beach, otherwise you have to take an uber because you feel unsafe while walking. You see nobody on the streets but beggers. The hospitals are the worst public ones usually don't have a doctor, and private ones has long queues besides expensive price you pay, the city is dirty, the main beach was infested with rats just last month. It's kinda cheap but the quality of life is bad and not worth living there. It's only a good spot for a week if you enjoy beach imo.
