How do you work out and stay fit on the road?

I worked out a few times a week back home, but havenโ€™t been able to figure out how to make it a part of my routine now that Iโ€™m living out of my backpack in hostels. Iโ€™ve always gone to gyms, but Iโ€™d be open to trying bodyweight exercises. I thought that I might be able to do bodyweight exercises in parks/etc, but the past few days in London have been wet and miserable and I canโ€™t find the motivation to go do push ups in wet grass. Any advice?

Make a friend and go for runs in the morning before the city wakes up! I found that training for a race was the only way for me to really clock the kmโ€™s and distance though. If thereโ€™s a city you know youโ€™ll be visiting in a few months see if they have any races and sign up!

For what itโ€™s worth, I own the BodyBoss, and it seems extremely heavy for what it is. I purchased it intending to travel with it, but not so sure itโ€™s the best option. Others who have traveled with it might be able to provide other feedback.

I carry with me the TRX Suspension Trainer (home edition), comes with a mesh bag to easily carry everything in. Itโ€™s great for strength training and has taken a lot of abuse over the year I have had it. I wish I could travel with my old portable pull-up bar but it would taken up too much space, even broken down. The only draw back with TRX is you need a strong anchor point. I have rented a room a few times in SE Asia where the doors are just too cheap and flimsy to act as a proper anchor to hold my body weight.

I do the high interval training course called โ€˜insanityโ€™. Itโ€™s a bit full on, but the point is that you donโ€™t need any gym equipment so itโ€™s perfect if youโ€™re on the move quite a bit and donโ€™t have a regular routine.

Go to reddit bodyweightfitness. There is a recommended routine there. Following it pretty much keeps you in great shape (though of course diet is 70% of physique anyways). I follow it and supplement it with gym passes for proper squats/DLs when I can find them, though alot of gyms in asia only have smith machines. Since leaving a sedentry office lifestyle in August have lost 18kg and in lean strong shape, even with the limited access to quality protein i had from my few months in india. @nickdanforth I feel finding bounce plates at accomodation gyms is pretty close to impossible in asia at least, so was wondering what your lifting routine was?

Yeah bounce plates arenโ€™t too common. My condo gym in Chiang Mai has them, which is nice, but Iโ€™ve just learned to live without on the road.

My routine only utilizes free weights (easy to find in pretty much any gym) and consists of supersets working opposing muscle groups in quick succession.

Over the last few months, Iโ€™ve been making a point to only book accommodation with an on-site gym and Iโ€™ve incorporated a proper lifting routine back into my every day life.

The small bit of extra hassle when booking accommodation has been absolutely worth it for the overall level of fitness I feel that Iโ€™ve achieved.

I use Black Mountain resistance bands, the deluxe editionโ€ฆall you need is a door, they are tough and come with a nylon carry case, fits easily into my rucksack. I usually sign up for yoga classes at a local school as well, so I donโ€™t feel like a hermit when I am in writing mode. I recently discovered running on the beach is an enjoyable experience.

I have been training for 10+ years and I am very skeptical of any training that is shorter than 40 min and itโ€™s not repeated at least 3 times per week. I am also not sure what can an app do for you? Full body exercises wonโ€™t do either because you canโ€™t really do all the fundamentals you need. The best thing is to find a gym. If you canโ€™t find a gym, you can check sandbag training. Running will be good, swimming will be better though. But you need some type of weight exercise.

Finally, check what you eat! I can keep fit training very little nowadays simply because I eat well and I keep a very simple diet.

Walk everywhere. Find a park and go jogging/running. Bonus if you find a park that has workout stations for bodyweight exercises.

I usually run every other day and work out in the days between. Nothing too extreme. 30 will go a long way. Youtube has tons of great videos, I really like this page: https://www.youtube.com/user/passion4profession Alot of good workout ideas that donโ€™t require any equipment.

Iโ€™ve been doing bodyweight exercises following the โ€œrecommended routineโ€ from reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/kb/recommended_routine) three times a week at home and then go for a run on the off daysโ€ฆ
You need exactly zero equipment, itโ€™s free and you can do it anywhere. :slight_smile:

When we โ€œsettleโ€ in a place (usually 2-3 months), I always sign up to a gym. I also travel with resistance bands which are super useful for at-home workouts. I also do a lot of bodyweight & functional training and do yoga everyday with help from YouTube :smile:

Usually, I find the nearest gym to my AirBNB or apartment and just negotiate a short-term contract. I aim for 2 - 3 sessions a week combined with lots of walking. Iโ€™ll also try to find some form of fitness thatโ€™s relevant to the area Iโ€™m staying in (i.e Surfing, martial arts, etc).

For eating I just use Foursquare to find good places to eat (Vegan/healthy).

So far this combo has been working great and Iโ€™ve managed to keep my weight + strength stable for 7 months :slight_smile:

Maybe try some apps that focus on short but intense exercises like HIIT? Lots out there. Thereโ€™s also other apps for more basic guided workouts - I use Quick 4, Seven and Popsugar Active (for workout videos). Iโ€™ve done these in small rooms and it doesnโ€™t require any equipment, just your phone :slight_smile: and I get a serious workout!

I like to have a program with pre-planned daily exercises, doesnโ€™t require any equipment, and can be done indoors. I find anything that deviates from this is hard for me to stick to.

Find a gym. In some places, it is easy to find nice housing that has a gym en suite.

Otherwise, I always bring running shoes. Hit the roads in the morning before the traffic starts - itโ€™s a great way to wake up and to see a new city.

I second the suggestions to find a gym, but I would also add that it would probably be helpful to invest in a workout program from a trainer if you donโ€™t already have one. I found that itโ€™s easier to go to the gym while traveling when I have my workout schedule from my trainer back home, so Iโ€™m going in with a plan. Itโ€™s much easier for me to stay motivated when Iโ€™ve got a set workout. There are also several yoga studios throughout London and that would be a nice alternative to the gym some days, too.

I travel with resistance bands in case I have difficulty finding a good gym, but the best advice is to adapt to your surroundings and try and get outdoors. I did a shoulder press/row/squat circuit in Splitโ€™s Marjan Park with 15kg logs and found a playground with a good dip setup. In Korcula I kayakโ€™d 4 hours for 100kuna (like 13 euros). Another important thing to remember is that most gyms have discounts for morning/afternoon times, so if you set your day up the right way, you can work out cheap with less people hogging the machines.

Hereโ€™s an unusual answer: negotiate gym access. Iโ€™ve discovered that resorts and hotels are often willing to provide you with a sample membership if you offer something of value that promotes them. Find a place that you feel great about, offer to help get the word out, and see what arrangement you might arrive at. :slight_smile:

Pushups, pullups, crunches, dips, lunges, squats. All great exercises that are easy to do in a variety of environments. You can also change them up with different grips, extra weight, extra movements etc.

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How do you network on the road?

Hey everyone, my girlfriend and I have been nomading for about 8 months now and weโ€™ve had a total blast doing it, but something weโ€™ve both struggled with is how to stay in touch with personal/professional networks while abroad, especially since we donโ€™t speak the language in most places we live. When youโ€™re at home or in a single English-speaking city, you can attend one of those awful professionals groups and make 10 business connections in 10 minutes, but when youโ€™re moving around monthly, itโ€™s just harder to keep up personal and professional relationships, let alone build new ones. So, as friends who understand this wonderful but often lonely lifestyle, how do you keep your networks up while on the road?

The paradox of choice, how do you make decisions on the road?

Hey all,

I recently spent 2.5 years as a DN (mostly Europe and SE Asia) but then went through a huge breakup (6 yr relationship) and decided to spend some time back home (Melbourne, AUS). Iโ€™m giving myself a year back here, just to โ€˜come downโ€™ from it all, reconnect with important people in my life, and lick my wounds a bit.

Can I just say, surprise surprise - itโ€™s HAAAARD! Being home is such a slap in the face, even though Iโ€™m earning more money than ever, my business is going great, and doing some other wonderful things/spending time with wonderful people. The breakup, coupled with a complete shift in my reality and routine has been almost too much to bare - I wouldnโ€™t recommend it! NOBODY at home understands the internal existential conflict Iโ€™m experiencing. Itโ€™s been 8 months and not getting any easier.

Hereโ€™s the thing: I know that I want to continue the DN lifestyle, and am very well-equipped to do so, but I canโ€™t stop thinking about why, how and when. Is it the right thing for me anymore? Should I set up a base here again properly, buy an apartment & all that jazz, and just do shorter trips?

This has probably been discussed multiple times, so apologies if Iโ€™m repeating. Here are my main concerns around going back to full time travel:

Being a DN with a long-term partner who was also working a bit seemed like the ultimate lifestyle for me. It was damn amazing. Now that Iโ€™m no longer in a relationship, and am a female nearing 30, I canโ€™t help but feel pressured by society to stay here and remain open to the possibility of eventually meeting someone again. If I want to have a family at any point, I kinda canโ€™t be running all over the world creating fleeting relationship after fleeting relationship and having to deal with the loneliness that inevitably hits when you make beautiful connections and then have to say goodbye over and over. I feel Iโ€™ve been โ€˜brokenโ€™ and donโ€™t have the emotional capacity to handle this anymore. At least last time, I had one solid thing that was always there - my partner.

On top of this, donโ€™t you think the DN thing is just way more purposeful and wonderful when you have someone to share it with? I feel like doing it alone will just remind me over and again of my loss. Perhaps though, as I create new memories, that will ease in time.

Also, because Iโ€™m so flustered and restless at the moment, I canโ€™t decide where I want to go next. Iโ€™m overwhelmed by all the places in the world I want to visit, and places I want to go back to. How do you cope with this overwhelm and making some decisions when youโ€™re alone? Was easy for me when I had someone to plan it out with.

And finally, am I being ridiculous? I know everyone says you should just do what you WANT to do in life, focus on yourself, do what makes you happy, and perhaps love will happen again at some point when youโ€™re ready. But you also donโ€™t get the things you want without a little bit of planning. Perhaps I should just stop thinking about my โ€˜body clockโ€™ and be ok with whatever happens. Easier said than done!

How to sign legal documents on the road?

It can be hard to get access to a good printer and scanner while moving, especially if you have to sign a lot of documents. Now, I could scan my signature and just copy paste a digital image it on the documents, but that doesnโ€™t feel secure and really easy to copy by others.

Anyone have advice for running a service based business from the road?

Hi everyone,

Iโ€™ve been running a web design business for the last 3 years from my hometown in the UK. Iโ€™ll be leaving for Chiang Mai in June and will be travelling across South-East Asia for 6 months.

Wondering if anyone has experience running a service based business on the road? One of my concerns is almost all my clients want to have face-to-face meetings, especially initial meetings to see if we can work together.

Obviously Skype is an option but when Iโ€™ve suggested this in the past people would much rather meet face-to-face.

Another potential stumbling block is being available to answer phone calls, although there seem to be good value telephone answering services available.

My long term goal is to move away from this and focus on building products as it allows for greater flexibility and growth. However, I need to continue the web design business for the foreseeable future as I have no other income streams as of yet.

Does anyone have any advice for running a service based business on the road? . Any advice is much appreciated :slight_smile:

Nomading can be a lonely lifestyle. Which is probably one of the biggest worries for people thinking about solo travel. However, nomading can also be a great opportunity for making new friends from different walks of life.

Where do you make new friends on the road? What kinds of places do you meet them? Any tips for finding like-minded folk?
