Is it possible to be a digital nomad vegan?

by @gregbrand 10yr  | 20 comments

Iโ€™m preparing for my first attempt at being a proper digital nomad. One of the many issues I have is will I be able to find good vegan options on the road?

I mean, Iโ€™m not picky or anything. Itโ€™s just hard sometimes to really get everything vegan, as some waiters are just a bit ignorant and will easily say โ€œno milk, no eggsโ€ but then come back with bunch of parmesan on your egg-y pasta

Any suggestions and experiences?

Not sure why there are a few non-vegans saying itโ€™s very hard? Iโ€™ve been doing it for a year on the road and itโ€™s very EASY (especially in Asia, where thereโ€™s tons of great vegan food readily available from convenience stores).

Not only is it easy, itโ€™s usually the cheapest way to eat. My friend who I was traveling with for several months usually ate vegan with me just because the food was healthier, you got more of it, and it was way cheaper.

HappyCow makes finding vegan places so incredibly simple. One of the best parts of travel for me is taking a look at HappyCow and visiting all the new interesting veg places when I arrive at a new destination.

Also, I just found this blogpost:

This blogger just published a little ebook on vegan travel in cooperation with Happy Cow, which you can sign up for on her website.

Happy travelling!

I have been digital nomading as a vegan for more than a year now and three years before as a vegetarian. Itโ€™s really not rocket science  Use HappyCow.com and do some research before you go. Write down local lingo for vegan food or get the vegan passport: https://www.vegansociety.com/shop/books/vegan-passport

I tend to choose places that cater well for vegans. Bali, Thailand, bigger cities or smaller hippie places (Encinitas/CA, Santa Teresa/Costa Rica, Tulum and Mazunte/Mexicoโ€ฆ)

And in the end: just get an AirBnB, go to fruit/veggie markets and make your own food.

Itโ€™s actually way more fun traveling as a vegan - it adds a bit of a challenge and itโ€™s awesome exploring a place by finding vegan food. I love it and have never starved to death

Have fun!!

Been traveling for 4 years. Vegan for about 14 months and Iโ€™ve had no issues on the road. Requires a bit of creativity and flexibility, but itโ€™s really not bad. Learning some key words/phrases in the local language really helps (no milk, no eggs, no fish sauce, etc.).

Vegetarian is super easy!

Depends on where you go. I dated a vegan in Buenos Aires. She had very limited options for eating out. In fact, I met her at the vegan restaurant.

In Spain there are some decent vegan options.

But yeah - much easier to be a vegetarian. Iโ€™ve been with with several and there was never any trouble with eating out.

Medellin had a surprising amount of vegetarian options. I was impressed.

Sorry for my delayed response, but for what itโ€™s worthโ€ฆ My boyfriend is a vegan in the strictest form. I mean he doesnโ€™t even wear any leather products or use anything but coconut or avocado oil and doesnโ€™t cook in the same pan as I do (Iโ€™m not vegan). He hasnโ€™t had any difficulty in Taiwan, Japan, Canada, India, Spain, UK, Cape Town. Iโ€™m also convinced he would have no issue finding food in Mauritius. Hope that helps and that youโ€™ve been able to eat

I havenโ€™t found it so hard, but then Iโ€™m not expecting nutritious dishes for every meal. Each country usually has at least one dish thatโ€™s vegan. Otherwise travel with snacks, and cook for yourself wherever possible.

Ha, itโ€™s funny  I was just talking to my sister. She is also a vegan. And while I was explaining to her that I am a bit worried how Iโ€™m going to eat out and if I would find any options in Chiang Mai โ€ฆ she starts laughing at me โ€ฆ

She says itโ€™s the biggest โ€œvegan retreatsโ€ area for the westerns. There is lots of 1-month vegan retreats and she tells me lots and lots vegan restaurants as a consequence of this โ€œvegan tourismโ€.

Iโ€™m starting in Madeira island though. But this tells me I wonโ€™t have trouble finding delicious and healthy vegan food

It depends where you go; big cities are always going to be easier. I was vegan for a few years (now Iโ€™m vegetarian) and managed to eat well even in meat-heavy places like Argentina. I recommend you use happycow to find places to eat. For instance, it shows Bangkok has 18 vegan restaurants (and 80+ vegetarian) and many of them are inexpensive. Also, in Thailand you can ask/look for jay food. You may find this video by Mark Wiens useful (check also his guide). As you mentioned itโ€™s โ€œeasyโ€ being vegan in Thailand; lotโ€™s of fruits and vegetables and vegetarian restaurants.

When I was in Bangkok, I used to eat a lot at the food court of the Terminal 21 mall. Delicious vegetaria/vegan food for $1.5!

Well, I will stay optimistic and see this an opportunity to go from โ€œsubstitutes seeking veganโ€ phase into more raw vegan phase.

That is probably more doable in Thailand, I would assume. Lots of fruits and vegetables. Very simple and even more healthy.

Itโ€™s probably easy to find good quality and still pretty cheap vegetables/fruits markets? I am thinking of starting off in Chiang Mai.

Over time, you begin to learn where the little pockets of healthy/vegan food are - itโ€™s just difficult when you first arrive.

Now that I think of it FourSquare.com has made my life super easy for finding places. Give that a download (worked great for me in USA/EU/SEA). Iโ€™ve managed to find some of the most amazing restaurants on my journey with that app.

Probably not going to happen as Pieter mentioned before. Also, I wouldnโ€™t be so quick to call waiters โ€œignorant.โ€ Iโ€™ve worked in food before and you canโ€™t really expect someone making minimum wage to be a food expert and memorize the ingredients of everything on the menu. Also, a lot of people donโ€™t know what vegan is, so donโ€™t expect everyone to just know exactly what you mean, especially when you might be dealing with a language barrier.

The best answer I can give you if you really want to eat vegan would be to buy your own food on the road and cook for yourself. That way you can read all the ingredients on the packaging and truly know if itโ€™s vegan or not.

Yes, that works I think. Although youโ€™re going probably be cooking Western dishes with Western (vegan) ingredients and again thatโ€™s going to be more expensive than staying at home.

If cost is not an issue for you then obviously this doesnโ€™t matter.

Itโ€™s very hard. Veganism is a mostly first-world developed country luxury, most of the rest of the world is still struggling to get ANY food on the table. So they donโ€™t have the luxury to be picky.

Youโ€™re fine being vegetarian, as most of the world has vegetable dishes, but youโ€™re going to run into a lot of trouble trying to be vegan and travel e.g. Asia or South America. Most local places are simply not vegan.

Any place that is vegan will probably be tailored to (relatively) wealthy people in those places, and thus you wonโ€™t be able to save money on food at all. Itโ€™ll probably be more expensive than in EU/US.

In addition, if you wonโ€™t be able to speak the local language itโ€™ll be even harder to ask them about ingredients or make specific requests. Thailand is a good example here, youโ€™re fine with English for ordering what they sell, but their English doesnโ€™t go much further than that usually.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 6yr 6 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks

How do digital nomads pay tax?

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 6yr 6 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

by @rose_davis 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). Iโ€™ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but Iโ€™d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities Iโ€™m considering:

  • Quito, Ecuador
  • Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Cartagena, Columbia
  • Antigua, Guatemala
  • San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Fast/easily accessible internet
  • Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
  • Safe for women
  • Some sort of spiritual community (Iโ€™m also a yoga teacher)
  • Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? Iโ€™m also completely open to other recommendations.

Thanks!
Rose
