Looking for a warm place, possibly near the sea with excellent wifi

by @mariaplslourdes 5yr  | 12 comments

hello  Iโ€™m planning my next trip (from January/February), and Iโ€™m looking for a place where itโ€™s hot, with the sea, and good wifi.
At the moment I live in Paris and work with San Francisco times, so preferably I wouldnโ€™t go to Asia.
Iโ€™m thinking, South Africa or South America, what do you recommend?
Thank you

If you are interested, Oahu is great. you would be up around 5am, but be done at 1pm, all afternoon to surf and explore. hit me up if you like, I have a great place to stay.

Cape Town is my favorite location, but theyโ€™re dealing with rolling blackouts at the moment and the timezone isnโ€™t great for SF based teams. Once their government and Eskom get their sh*t together the timezone challenge might be worth it. Itโ€™s an amazing city - geography, people, beaches, music, art, food. The place has it ALL.

I work remotely for a SF company as well, and have chosen Mazatlan. Itโ€™s in the CST timezone, on the Sea of Cortez, warm climate, friendly locals, and the coworking spaces have 100mb lines which are good enough for me.

Florianรณpolis! It is cheap depending on which part of the island youโ€™re at, hot place during the summer, cool people, a good night life and a safe place overall.

Around US time zones, you could think of the caribbeans (Dominican Republic, Sint Marteen, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands). There are cruise ships that hop on and off those islands if thatโ€™s your thing (largest ones have insanely good wifi those days). Cartagena (Columbia) and surroundings are a nice spot as well.

Along EU time zones you could look into Mauritius in the INdian Ocean or the Canarias in the Atlantic?

Which ones? Thatโ€™s my primary concern if I ever have to take cruise ships. I wonder if you can work reliably from a boat lol

I was able to work very reliably for 2 weeks last year crossing the Atlantic from Barcelona to Miami onboard Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean). I was the only working soul at my tiny bootstrapped startup at the time and was able to do everything from customer support, to bug fixing, sshโ€™ing on a server and deploying to prod in the middle of the ocean :joy:.

Iโ€™d recommend you target the newer & bigger ships, or possibly the recently refurbished ones. Sites like CruiseCritics should give you some hints as to internet speed and quality on a particular ship.

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Cheap Cities in Mexico & South America with Fastest Wifi

in Mexico by @jnomad30 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi Guys,
Iโ€™m planning out my next stops after leaving Medellin, Colombia soon where I can hunker down and get some work done with fast wifi and cheap living. Will be in Mexico first so starting a look there but wondering if coming back down to South America might make more sense?
My main concerns are budget and fast enough wifi for me to work from home. Other considerations are some nomad community (ideally also some English speaking expats as my Spanish is basic) and warm enough weather.
Thanks in advance!

Greece- WIFI- how is it really?

in Greece by @amandamay 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! Iโ€™ve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We plan on renting an apartment after staying in airbnb and would like to work from the place we are staying in. Thanks so much for helping me decide if we can continue on or change plans.

Nomad Family looking for a short term rental in Mumbai

in Mumbai , India by @ricardomolina 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello All,
We are a nomad family starting our journey in Medellin. India / Mumbai to be specific is our next destination.
I am finding it very difficult to find properties in AirBnB within a reasonable budget and makaan and magicbricks is cumbersome.

Anyone has had any experience on best approach to find where to stay?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Looking for something to prop up my Asus MB169B+

by @jbweimar 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

I recently purchased a second monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro 15". I use the Nextstand laptop stand to get my MacBook to eye level. Iโ€™m wondering what second monitor (without base) users are using to get their second monitor at the same level. I know of this company Elevate Stand (.com), but it seems a bit heavy and bulky (although I guess it must be somewhat, if it is to hold a monitor).

I'm looking for a European city with a great connection to the outdoors. Help?

by @justinbosco 7yr 7 years ago  | 23 comments

Iโ€™m in the middle of doing some research for our next destination within Europe and Iโ€™m hoping to get some suggestions from some outdoor enthusiasts whoโ€™ve spent time on the continent.

My favorite cities are Innsbruck, Austria and Bergen, Norway because you can be downtown having a beer one minute and thenโ€ฆ boomโ€ฆ up the mountain in the middle of nowhere 15 minutes later. Iโ€™m looking for a similar place to spend a month or two this winter. Places like these are hard to find because โ€œmid-size european cities with great hiking nearbyโ€ doesnโ€™t return too many relevant results on Google. Great adventure towns are usually in the middle of nowhere, the kind of places youโ€™ll need to rent a car to get to the grocery store, and places with good public transportation are usually concrete jungles. But places like Innsbruck and Bergen manage to combine the best of both worlds.

Has anyone come across similar places theyโ€™d recommend?

Best WiFi on the beach in Playa del Carmen

in Playa del Carmen , Mexico by @clusk 8yr 8 years ago  | 1 comment

Been in Playa for a day working at Nest. Good spot - but I forget Iโ€™m in a tropical locale. Does anyone have positive WiFi experience with a bar, restaurant, cafe on the beach in Playa del Carmen? It doesnโ€™t have to be rocket fast - just not a slow, unreliable connection.

Thanks!

Has anybody encountered a travel gear mfr that intentionally makes crappy-looking gear?

by @octavient 8yr 8 years ago  | 8 comments

Has anybody ever encountered a travel gear manufacturer that makes gear that is solid and durable, but that is intentionally designed to look old and crappy? For international travel, I want good, durable gear, but Iโ€™m uncomfortable walking around with slick, brand-new-looking, expensive-looking gear (especially with my family in tow). Iโ€™m happy to snatch up any good used gear (reduce, reuse, recycle) that weโ€™re lucky enough to encounter, but selection is limited, and durability is often compromised. Seems like thereโ€™d be a decent market for some durable but ragged-looking travel gear. What i have in mind is luggage, backpacks, laptop cases, smartphone cases, camera bags, infant/toddler carriers, etc. Iโ€™m sensitive to the preppy fad of clueless, well-off westerners dressing up like the poor in naive but trendy mockery, but thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m after, here. I just want good gear that doesnโ€™t put a target on my back as we traipse around various parts of the world. Anybody have any thoughts on thisโ€ฆ?

Is it feasible to work in deep north of Canada ( in Inuvik) regarding wifi and the like?

in Canada by @albertocanada 8yr 8 years ago  | 1 comment

I want to volunteer at a Sledge dogs training school in the city of Inuvik ( north of Canada) from June onwards. As a travel blogger, this destination is very interesting, mainly due to the Midnight sun at this time of year. However, wifi availability is a real concern. Of course I donโ€™t expect to find coworking spaces but wifi is an essential work tool for us. Any experiences ?

What alternatives are there for bad WiFi in Latin America?

by @ryanleonard1989 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Hey gang, Iโ€™ve traveled pretty extensively through Central America and was recently in Colombia.

I love Latin America and want to continue to travel/work here, but internet connectivity is a constant issue. Hostel wifi is always hit or miss and when it does work, itโ€™s often slow or thereโ€™s no convenient place to work.

Cafes are even worse most of the time.

Iโ€™ve tried local sim cards with data and sometimes that works well, but skype calls eat the data right up and in many locations, the speeds are slow.

Iโ€™m willing to pay more for more reliable internet, but I havenโ€™t found anythingโ€ฆ

Wondering what most of you fine folks do and if anyone has any suggestions.

Also, what are some alternatives to hostels?

I know you can use AirBnB, but the locals jack the prices up on there (if youโ€™re in an area you can find anything on AirBnB). Apartment rentals can be found pretty inexpensively, but I like to stay moving and usually donโ€™t want to stay somewhere for even a month.

On top of all this, I like to surf and the coastal towns tend to be the worst for wifi.

Iโ€™m a little frustrated and wondering if anyone has any suggestions I havenโ€™t thought of?

Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

by @torhev 8yr 8 years ago  | 14 comments

Hi all,

For Jan through March Iโ€™m looking for a place that as a) friendly people, b) warm climate, c) surfing, and d) reliable internet (either in cafes or a coworking space).

So far, this is my short list:

  • Canggu, Bali (already was there last year, but too busy with work then)
  • Phillippines (I donโ€™t know where yet, but Iโ€™ve read Baler might be nice)
  • Mexico (but havenโ€™t yet researched)
  • Nicaragua (but havenโ€™t yet researched)

If anyone has some good info on this, please share! : )

How is the quality of wifi & 3G in Amed, Bali?

in Amed , Indonesia by @adrienbetweets 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi all!

I am considering going for 1+ month in Amed (to get more into freediving).

I need to be able to make Skype calls & other work-related tasks. I need a speed equivalent to one allowing me to watch Youtube videos.

Ubud is way more connected in comparison, so I donโ€™t expect anything wonderful.

Wondering if anyone has done this before & if yes: what 3G
provider they used, or what cafe/restaurant/hotel had a good/reliable
enough wifi connection.

Note that I went to Amed last year & the 3G connection on the 2 providers I used at the time was terrible. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking for help.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I also posted this question on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/82403/quality-of-wifis-3g-reception-in-amed-bali

How do you stay safe on public WiFi?

by @skatkov 8yr 8 years ago  | 27 comments

Weโ€™ve seen some โ€˜coffee-spot listsโ€™ websites popping in, a lot of them consider wifi signal quality, some of them measure internet speeds. But i didnโ€™t see nobody considering Wifi AP safety.

If we consider co-working spaces, we would think that it should be safe to use internet there. But coffee shop are a different deal, especially while traveling in less touristy places. I would like to encourage community to gather a โ€˜Digital Nomad wifi access point safety checklistโ€™.

Doing work an a road we should consider safety of our computer. Itโ€™s not just a matter of your personal data, usually clients and company could be involved. I really hope everyone uses secure connection at least over the VPN while you guys are working.

There are very easy measures to avoid โ€˜men-in-the-middleโ€™ attacks and other nastyness. Lets list all the checks we can run against Access Point to verify it security at some level.

Iโ€™ll start:
โ€“ Go to access point login screen and verify that itโ€™s impossible to login with default passwords.
โ€“ Donโ€™t use wifi with WEP!

Looking for somewhere with snow

by @jb510 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

We spend a ton of time in the tropics and are craving a little bit of winter. There was a thread about ski towns: What are good ski towns for digital nomads? but Iโ€™m actually wondering about non-ski towns.

  • On the cheaper side
  • Reasonable internet and/or coworking
  • Has good public transit
  • Has snow without being mind numbingly cold

Anywhere on the planet is of interest from Bulgaria to New Zealand, from Harbin to Matroosbergโ€ฆ i donโ€™t really care where on the planet it is, just that itโ€™s not to hard to get to/from.

Canadian resident looking for advice on reducing taxes

by @yesmad 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

My girlfriend and I are Canadian residents that make a full-time income online, though affiliate commissions and ad revenue. As of right now, we have bank accounts in the US and most income is earned in USD.

The thing is that our income taxes are quickly rising to the point that itโ€™s absurd and would be well worth the time and money spent to reduce them somehow.

Can anyone comment on our options here?

Weโ€™ve considered moving around and not staying in any one country long enough to owe taxes anywhere, but that seems very difficult as a Canadian resident:

Reading up on the stipulations for being a โ€œresident for tax purposesโ€ in Canada, they basically want you to sell all of your belongings and cut ties with your family in order to not be a taxed resident. Is this true?

Another option weโ€™re interested in is incorporating in an offshore country that has low or zero corporation taxes. Does anyone have any suggestions here?

Iโ€™ve been looking into setting up a Canadian corporation, but the corporation tax is still upwards of 15%, plus youโ€™re taxed on what you take out of the corporation.

If anyone here has knowledge about any of this Iโ€™d love to hear your advice.
