Would anyone be interested in an accounting app for nomads?

by @andrewkent 11yr  | 16 comments

Taxes and accounting are a huge pain in the ass for me. Iโ€™m currently using a mix of quickbooks, google drive/dropbox, google sheets, and the ScanPro app. Getting all these things to integrate is just a headache.

I would like an accounting app that works for nomads. Would anyone else be interested in something like this? Or, does anyone know of any good accounting apps for nomad types out there?

Some of the features I want:

  • Connect to a bank account to load transactions and classify them (just like quickbooks)

  • Digitize receipts/docs. I canโ€™t haul a bunch documents around, so I want to be able to snap a picture of a receipt/document using a smartphone AND link it to a specific entry in my linked bank transactions. Why the hell does Quickbooks not have this feature?

  • Find tax deductions that nomads can typically claim. Quickbooks does deductions like home office, but nomads donโ€™t have home offices. Would like an app that finds deductions for the perpetual nomad (e.g., certain situations where housing is deductible while youโ€™re abroad, some travel expenses, etc.)

Any other features that people would like?

If no one knows of anything out there (Iโ€™ve googled my brains out, so any suggestions are welcome), please let me know.

I have seen it. Itโ€™s more expensive than quickbooks and I donโ€™t really see any more features or advantages compared to QB. Do you know of any?

So iโ€™m a software engineer, so Iโ€™m generally curious: What deductions can you really claim? Apart from my health insurance premiums I havenโ€™t really claimed anything. Iโ€™d be much less interested in a accounting solution, than a tax solution, I quite frankly have no desire to dabble in international tax law

@andrewkent 11yr

Hey Nam, I totally agree: international tax laws sounds about as fun to me as pulling my toenails out with a pair of vice grips.

As for personal deductions (i.e., outside of general business deductions), I have student loan interest that I can claim, health related expenses (health/dental/vision insurance, glasses/contacts, etc), I have a health savings account (HSA) I contribute to each month, an IRA, I donate to a couple charities each month โ€” thatโ€™s all I can think of right now.

I spoke with a CPA at the end of last year and he told me I can deduct the coffee/food I buy at coffee shops when Iโ€™m working (50% of it, I think) as a business expense. I didnโ€™t believe him at first, but I spoke with an accountant friend of mine and did some research and I guess you can. Thatโ€™s usually at least a few bucks a day for me, so it adds up I suppose.

@bartclaeys 11yr

You can and should deduct anything that is related to your business. So if you work from home, then you deduct part of your rent. If you work from a co-working space, then you deduct this cost. Etc. US tax law is so complex that nobody, even not trained CPAโ€™s know what to do. And as long as you pay taxes and report a profit then you should be fine. Obviously you shouldnโ€™t deduct anything thatโ€™s not related to your business (like dinner with your partner) and you should be really careful deducting stuff if youโ€™re going to report a loss. That triggers a flag.

  • Digital (scanned) receipts are not accepted in most jurisdictions. Only if you received them electronically in the first place.
  • The deductions you mention are not relevant for most people outside the US either. Why not book it all in a company and calculate P/L? This is how most accounting apps are set up for.

Thanks, Manuel.

Iโ€™m a US citizen, so the deductions are relevant for me, so Iโ€™d like an app that does calculate these deductions.

What is P/L? Iโ€™m not an accountantโ€ฆ Profit/Loss? Not sure I follow how this would help reduce my headaches. Can you explain more?

Well, sadly, neither of those services have everything Iโ€™m looking for โ€” it seems to me that some of them are good one or two aspects of accounting for contractors/freelancers, but they fall short on a few others.

Iโ€™m seriously considering building an app tailored to nomads. If anyone is interested (or wants to help?), message me.

Also, quickbooks only estimates self-employment taxes, not income taxes for US tax payers. I would like an app that estimates both.

So, for example, I can deduct my health insurance premiums from my income taxes but not self-employment taxโ€ฆbut I can deduct part of my self-employment taxes on my income tax (gag me with a soup ladle โ€” US tax code needs some serious simplification).

I need an app that will separate the two types of expenses and estimate BOTH types of tax. Again, why doesnโ€™t quickbooks do this?

http://www.freeagent.com/ has a US version (bottom right corner for the selector).

But also, lots of nomads arenโ€™t US citizens, and thatโ€™s an assumption thatโ€™s made on a LOT of sites / apps and it takes a lot of effort and time to find out that it wonโ€™t work for me.

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

What is the best way to approach Taiwan?

in Taiwan by @zoxel 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

We have never been in Taiwan (a couple of travelers) and I am just wondering is possible to find there some quite clean place to hang for a while? How it is better to start? Are there any websiteโ€™s for short and long term rentals? It looks like AirBnB is not that popular there. So it seems that usual tactics - rent hotel or airbnb for short term and then look for long term just driving around might not work. It looks like everything there in Chinese - so if there are any tips how to overcome this - that is more then welcome  Overall just interested in any suggestion - where best to go first? Also is it hard to extend your stay there - we are digital nomads - so working for some company overseas and probably will be extending as a tourist (If we like there).
Sorry for so many questions - but this is really some terra incognita for me

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 6yr 6 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 6yr 6 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 6yr 6 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brandonolin 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari , Italy by @mitch_dina 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.
