I was just on an EVA Air flight from San Francisco to Taipei a few days ago, and had a pretty usable connection for about 80% of the 14h flying time. Well-worth the price of the 1-day pass.
Hi Karl, i had it once on a KLM flight from AMS to GRU. It was awesome. Was facetiming without much problems. As it was paid, probably few people were using it and thats why it was working good.
FaceTiming from the airplane?! Wow! 
Also, I am starting to blog about my digital nomad travels, and I found something out about Nippon Airlines flight NH 816: while over mainland China (and maybe some of its waters?), in-flight wifi is unavailable. It was surprising!

To follow up with my original question: China Airlines 777-200ER flight was great for wifi over the Pacific, from LAX to Taipei. Not good enough for voice (as I kind of guessed), but it was on the whole flight, and I was able to push git commits, chat with my team, and check email just like a regular workday.
My flights from Taipei to Sydney and Auckland had no internet, though, so be aware of that (it wasnโt a 777-200ER, either).
Iโve had very good experience with Lufthansaโs wifi - thatโs actually one of the reason I always try to book with them when crossing the Atlantic. Itโs usually very reliable (stays on the whole flight), reasonably priced (I think around $20 for the whole flight), and reasonably fast. There is a slight lag due to the fact that it has to go through satellite connection, and I havenโt tried voice (I think itโs against their ToS).
I highly recommend them.
I just returned from Beijing, China and flew on United. I had Wifi on the entire flight both going and on the return from Beijing. It stayed connected the entire time and I was able to text chat without a problem (connected via VPN). As for voice I donโt think this would be possible.
Iโve used Iberiaโs in-flight internet a few times now. Itโs expensive ($40 for 50MB), slow, cuts out a lot and probably unsuitable for voice. Last week I tried it and it wouldnโt work for half the flight. YMMV!
Air China definitely wonโt have wifi.
I work on planes all the time, but I have to plan for it; I generally will identify some dev task which I can do without looking stuff up and complete entirely in my local environment. Keeping in touch with your team is an unreliable luxury though, and doing a call is not going to happen.
From my experience, the performance is less about the airline and more about external issues like weather, etc.
When an aircraft reaches to its cruise altitude (36,000 - 38,000 ft), most cumulonimbi are under it, so weather canโt be an excuse here. Itโs probably because there are too many people connecting to the same network which is not originally fast so it makes it slow and unreliable.
Even if itโs fast, I donโt understand why OP wanted to work in a flight, I thought only Obama and Kim Jong Ul did that. I would spend that time to sleep or read a book instead. I would not want to let the next guy see what I chat with my team/client, nor annoy them with phone calls.
I was told that it has something to do with certain types of electro-magnetic interference, etc, but I certainly donโt know it first hand. Thanks for the clarification and insight.
Winter is coming and Iโm feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.
I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.
Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโm open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.
We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?
I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.
As far as I know of, Canadians donโt pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.
But Iโd like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.
Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โtermination for excessive international roamingโ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโs) as follows:
โThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ

Iโm planning out my next stops after leaving Medellin, Colombia soon where I can hunker down and get some work done with fast wifi and cheap living. Will be in Mexico first so starting a look there but wondering if coming back down to South America might make more sense?
My main concerns are budget and fast enough wifi for me to work from home. Other considerations are some nomad community (ideally also some English speaking expats as my Spanish is basic) and warm enough weather.

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! Iโve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.
Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.
Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโm not planning to go full erm, โtax optimisationโ, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.
Iโve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโm a EU citizen), but I donโt want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?
