Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 4yr  | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Goa is okay but I'd reconsider that destination as it's not a popular nomad destination at all and probably for a reason. Especially for the first few destinations you go, it's probably easier to go to places that are already established as nomad hubs. Then once you get the hang of it, visit more unique places.

Re: type of spaces, it depends on your budget too. Hostels can be really cheap, Airbnbs lesser so, and coliving spaces are the most expensive but usually offer workspaces too!

Hi, great thoughts, thanks.

We've already booked our destination for the first place so not much we can do now haha, unless the pandemic suggests otherwise.

Where would you recommend in SE Asia for nomads? Is there a list anywhere?

Do you think co-living spaces are worth it once you take into account the workspaces? I suppose you'll save a lot by not paying for coffee everywhere! And I assume you're more likely to get internet that works?

The only downfall we saw was the cooking facilities didn't look that great, but I suppose eating out more is a great way to meet people (as per our other thread!).

Thanks.

My setup is pretty elaborate even while travelling. I have travel routers, secondary monitors etc.. Setting up in a co-working space is rather annoying for me. Also when I get into a flow and want to be up until 2-3am its pretty hard from a co-working space.

A lot of the co-living spaces I have looked at were either out of the way or over priced.

Thanks Jonathan, that's really helpful - thanks for your insights on co-living spaces. It sounds you have a pretty sweet set up - what work is it that you do? Also which travel routers would you recommend? Thank you!

> Do you think co-living spaces are worth it once you take into account the workspaces?

Nope, I think more worthwhile to stay in a hotel or Airbnb and then work from cafes or coworkings. Having everything in one spot (like a coliving) sounds nice but also means you won't be going out a lot and won't be meeting ppl a lot.

> Where would you recommend in SE Asia for nomads? Is there a list anywhere?

Haha yes, that's essentially the ranking of Nomad List: nomadlist.com

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

What are the best coworking spaces in Playa del Carmen, Mexico?

in Playa del Carmen , Mexico by @simone_scarduzio 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Would you recommend โ€œWork Zoneโ€ http://www.oficinasplaya.com over Nest?
Do you have other coworking spaces there you would recommend?

And where is a good place to stay (i.e. coliving)?

Recommendations for a portable speaker system suitable for a DJ monitor while travelling? Preferring size over loudness

by @jackbarham 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Iโ€™ve got myself a DDJ 400 DJ controller, and the compact size makes it ideal to throw into my suitcase while I go travelling next year.

It made me wonder if there was a decent portable speaker system thatโ€™s loud (and clear) enough for light bedroom DJing I could pack alongside the 400 to practice new tracks and record mixes.

I currently have a Bose Soundlink Mini II which was surprisingly good for the job. Although I feel itโ€™ll probably damage if I keep pumping at full pelt, and itโ€™s not quite loud enough for what I wanted but not far off at all.

I ordered a pair of iLoud Micro Monitors, and although seriously impressed with the sound quality, I ended up returning them for KRK Rokit 5 G3โ€™s as they were too heavy for permanent (Digital Nomad) travelling so thought Iโ€™d get some solid DJ speakers in the meantime.

Which coworking spaces are open 24/7?

by @yako 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere around the world? Sometimes because of my line of work I need to be awake when everyone is sleeping on the country I am in (but I know I am not the only one!). It would be amazing to share that time at a coworking space with others who like to work at night or who have to be awake. Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere in the world?

Best Co-living / Co-working in Hawaii?

by @roconnor661 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi nomads, Iโ€™m in Hawaii for a couple months and wondered what the best co-working or co-living spaces were on the islands and why? Preferably near surf spots and also easy to meet some other DNs.

Search/review site for Co-Working spaces around the world?

by @gnefkow 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Hostelworld for hostels,
Nomadlist for general locations,
Yelp for food (among other things)
Trip Advisor for activitiesโ€ฆ

Is there a website where a community of people can rate and review co-working spaces around the world? Iโ€™m in a nice place right now, and about to start on toward the next destination, Iโ€™d love to review the coworking space Iโ€™m currently sitting in and start planning for the next stop.

I know that there are some threads around here about it, but Iโ€™d love to search โ€œTaipeiโ€ and see a list of them with reviews from actual nomads (rather than the hap-hazard websites the coworking spaces make about themselves).

Any nomads up for skiing and a co-living experiment in Canada?

in Canada by @vladepap 8yr 8 years ago  | 31 comments

Hi guys,
Iโ€™ve been traveling for awhile now and lately Iโ€™ve been dreaming of heading back to Canada for the 2016/17 winter season (Dec-Mar?). Namely of spending a ski season in Nelson, BC, a mountain town I lived in a few years ago.

Nelson, BC is known for the most amazing powder. The small resort at Whitewater is very accessible (about 20 minutes outside of town) and in close proximity to slack and backcountry skiing. Nelson is also located near the Powder Highway and is accessible to a lot of other well known powder spots.

Have you ever dreamed of being a โ€œski bumโ€ for a season? Of skiing in the morning and working in the afternoon? Of attempting a co living experiment with other working, professional type nomads who share your passion and lifestyle?

What I know about co living I have learned from research around co working and it seems like the next logical step (to me). Have you heard of 20Mission in San Francisco? Or one of the other co living proposals in this forum? The experiment part is to see who would commit and what amazing projects and ideas might come out of such a space. In my experience, when I travel, there is something missing out of the places I stay. Either I get lonely or distracted by holiday makers and other travellers. I sometimes struggle to find a work space where I feel productive as well as engaged and would like to explore this as a solution. Work AND ski everyday? Be creative and productive where I live? Sounds pretty close to living the dream to me.

Some extras about Nelson:
Think white winter. Silence, snow covered trees and streets. Fireplace.
There are hot springs close by.
This is no ordinary small town, thereโ€™s a very diverse population.
This town is an organic, clean living mecca, or the opposite if thatโ€™s what you seek.
There are many opportunities to engage in the community, be it volunteering, participating in clubs or groups.

Thinking about it, I would put down three requirements;
Desire to ski
Working nomad
Long(ish) term stay (eg: a month?)

The idea is to rent a house with a group of committed individuals and see what happens. Will a type of community be fostered and emerge? How can we co-create it?

If I have piqued your interested and you want to join me, learn more or keep in touch, let me know. This post is meant to give me an idea of whether there is any interest in this idea.

Any coworking spaces in Colombo, Sri Lanka

in Colombo , Sri Lanka by @borowiis 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi there!

Iโ€™m staying in Weligama on the coast for a month in a rented house, but I need to spend one day in Colombo because my flight is at night. So, do you know any good place to hang out and work? Maybe a nice coffee shop or a coworking place? I also have my family with me, so if they have some cool attraction nearby (say, park or playground) to spend time at that would add points.

I was only passing through Colombo on my way to the South and it looked to me like a hectic place, so if anyone has firsthand experience that would be awesome.

Kind regards,
Borys

Are there any coworking spaces on Thailand's islands? Ideally on Ko Samui or Ko Phangan?

in Ko Samui , Thailand by @rich 9yr 9 years ago  | 9 comments

Hi to all Nomads living on Ko Samui or Ko Phangan!

Are there any good coworking spaces on the islands of Thailand? (I only found one in Ko Lanta, but nothing on the Eastern islands like Ko Samui or Ko Phangan where I would like to stay.)
If not, what are the best internet cafes to work comfortably and quietly?
How fast and how reliable is the internet connection?

Thanks so much!
