Recommendations for a portable speaker system suitable for a DJ monitor while travelling? Preferring size over loudness

by @jackbarham 6yr  | 0 comments

Iโ€™ve got myself a DDJ 400 DJ controller, and the compact size makes it ideal to throw into my suitcase while I go travelling next year.

It made me wonder if there was a decent portable speaker system thatโ€™s loud (and clear) enough for light bedroom DJing I could pack alongside the 400 to practice new tracks and record mixes.

I currently have a Bose Soundlink Mini II which was surprisingly good for the job. Although I feel itโ€™ll probably damage if I keep pumping at full pelt, and itโ€™s not quite loud enough for what I wanted but not far off at all.

I ordered a pair of iLoud Micro Monitors, and although seriously impressed with the sound quality, I ended up returning them for KRK Rokit 5 G3โ€™s as they were too heavy for permanent (Digital Nomad) travelling so thought Iโ€™d get some solid DJ speakers in the meantime.

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.

How do you find people to meet whilst travelling?

by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

We are going travelling but we won't know anyone out there, what's your best advice for meeting people and socialising abroad? We've thought about the obvious things like Meetup etc, is there anything else you can suggest from your experience?

Can I bring my computer monitor on an airplane and through customs?

by @rfs45 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

Hello dearest nomads,
My girlfriend and I are heading to Argentina for three months, we both work remotely and want to bring our monitors with us.
Does anyone have experience regarding if this will trigger concerns with customs, either for taxes (less important) or lack of work permit (more important).
We both work for my own company which is based in US.
Thanks in advance!

Which places in South East Asia are suitable for kids?

by @nomad4 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everybody,

weโ€™re a family of 4 from Canada (Quebec province) leaving to Thailand on December 1st.
Our plan is to take things slowly and live in a peaceful environment while working a little and doing homeschooling to our 6-year-old son (plus escaping Canadian-cold winter )

This is roughly what our plan would look like:

  • arriving in Bangkok, staying there for about a week (air bnb probably)
  • moving to Chiang Mai then Krabi (most likely Ao Nang, Ao Tha Lane, Railay) or Koh Pha Ngan (North part) or Koh Chang (2-3 months)
  • then Indonesia (Bali/Gili islands) (1,5 months)
  • And Malaysia (Batu Ferengi, Penang) to finish (1 month)

Weโ€™re not city dwellers, and love being surrounded by nature.
Knowing that, what would be the best places for a family who want something quiet, walkable and with reliable Internet service?

Thanks!
Magali and Guillaume

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Is it absurd to travel with an extra monitor in my carry on?

by @joshuaballard 7yr 7 years ago  | 15 comments

Hi all, Iโ€™m about to make my maiden voyage into the digital nomad lifestyle. 2 cities coming up (chiang mai and Cebu)

I work online and can not stand working without at least 2 monitors (preferably more haha)

Is it insane to pack a monitor whilst I travel?

thanks in advance

edit: sorry about the duplicate, I found this thread How do you work without multiple monitors? I can only carry a MBP 15" and ended up ordering an ASUS MB168B+ after reading through.

This forum is certainly helpful!

Bring external monitor to SE asia and avoid coworking cost?

by @anderkd 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Would it be advisable or wacky to lug an external monitor from the US in hopes of avoiding coworking costs by working from Airbnb with decent wifi? Iโ€™m not sold on coworking spaces, and like the solitude of coding away in my own little airbnb space. One screen is limiting to productivity, hence the love of an external monitor. Thoughts?

How can I monitor my data usage when I have limited amounts of mobile data?

by @littleshiva 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

I use a mobile internet stick that gives me 1 gigabyte of bandwidth in a 24-hour period. If I use it all up in half that time (easy with print jobs) I have to either wait it out or use another stick. What are some of the things I can do to keep bandwidth from being used without my knowledge? (macbook pro / Yosemite) I looked in the activity monitor and safari seemed to be using a lot so I keep it off now when Iโ€™m not using it, and I paused synching on dropbox and creative cloud until Iโ€™m hooked up to wifi. Any other tricks?

How do you deal with getting data on your mobile while travelling?

by @nomads_and_drifters 8yr 8 years ago  | 15 comments

Hi,
I wondered how everybody deals with getting data on their phone in each country they travel. Is there a way around it? It is always such a pain having to buy and activate sim cards everywhere. I have tried the company โ€œworldsimโ€ and had an international sim for a while, but they where terrible and ended up to be super expensive.

How do you work without multiple monitors? I can only carry a MBP 15"

by @tschentscher 8yr 8 years ago  | 39 comments

Hi Nomads!

Starting January 2016 Iโ€™m going to be starting a year as a Digital Nomad.
The last 5 years Iโ€™ve never worked with less than 2 monitors in front of me.
Sure, Iโ€™ve done some cafรฉ and hotel-room work. But all my biggest project has all been done in front of a stationary setup.

I do webdesign and development and have created a working habbit with several monitors on a large desk. Funny enough this is my biggest concern getting closer to January.

How do i teach myself to work from a 15" screen?
Do you find working from a 15" screen enough or do you have some kind of magical folding screen in your backpack?

If you have any ideas for me keeping a dual-monitor setup (The laptop being the first monitor) Iโ€™m all ears!

Regards! And thank you for this delightful Forum!

Portable external laptop battery for MacBook Pro?

by @pezmc 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi all,

Iโ€™ve been doing some research on external batteries for the MacBook having seen a HyperJuice in someoneโ€™s desk shot. There was also a thread on this about a year ago: Whatโ€™s the best portable battery charger for a MacBook?

My findings so far are that itโ€™s very important which laptop you have. A MacBook โ€˜Newโ€™ (USB-C) seems to have the most options, followed by a MacBook Air which has a low power requirement, the MacBook Pro 13" which has a medium power requirement and the MacBook Pro 15" which has a very high power requirement and very limited options.

Iโ€™ve found the below, have any of you used/tried them? Do you know of any alternatives? Personally Iโ€™m looking for something that works well with the MacBook Pro 15" but share anything as others may find it useful!

  • HyperJuice - comes in sizes 60/100/150/222WH - requires a modification to your MacBook charger as they canโ€™t use the patented MagSafe2 adapter.
  • BatteryBox - 60 Wh - uses a custom compatible charger that works with the Air/Pro/MacBook
  • ChugPlug - 65 Wh - MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13" only, small battery capacity
  • Xiaomi power bank - ~80 Wh - MacBook USB-C only

Costa Rica or other suggestions in SA for a single woman travelling?

in Costa Rica by @ruthk 9yr 9 years ago  | 14 comments

Hi guys,
Iโ€™ve decided I want to take a break from my way of living and go nomad for a few months (at least). I do music so WiFi is not my main concern, all I need is good inspiration and nice people around me.

I am looking for a mid-cheap / safe place, preferably having a nice beach around. Iโ€™d also like to socialize with people from different cultures. Meet and make new friends.
I got sick from living in Europe/US, so Iโ€™d rather be far away from these continents.

My choices have come down do Costa Rica, but Iโ€™m reading some good stuff about Medellin, Mexico, Panama. Iโ€™ve spend quite some time in Asia traveling as well (I love Bali and Koh Lanta), but Iโ€™ve never been to South America, so Iโ€™d rather go in that direction.

What would you suggest?

Do you read paper magazines while you're travelling?

by @gaelm 9yr 9 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™ve always thought that is important to balance a very digital lifestyle with some analogic source of informations, like magazines, books, newspapers, but in a nomadic lifestyle it could be difficult to find same media in every country. How do you feel about that? Do you read something specific and cross-crountry?

What is the best portable printer?

by @matthiasezeitler 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Any recommendations for a portable printer that is light and can print A4 sized pages?
At times I have bought cheap โ€œthrow awayโ€ printers when I stayed longer at a location, but I havent really found a good solution that I can just keep in my luggage.

Any recommendations?

How do you manage your time while freelancing and travelling?

by @ray 9yr 9 years ago  | 8 comments

Hi everyone,

Iโ€™m currently new to freelancing and Iโ€™m working on two projects at the moment. However, Iโ€™m not travelling yet as Iโ€™m still saving and building up a portfolio but at the moment I canโ€™t see how I could do this while travelling as it seems to take up all my time.

I know this is down to bad time management, but at the moment Iโ€™m spending about 12 hours a day working on clients websites. How do you current freelance web developers manage your freelancing work and have time to enjoy yourself while travelling?

Is there any tools or techniques that I can use to manage my time better?

Can I adjust my US taxes for the foreign income exclusion?

by @wanderingdev 9yr 9 years ago  | 7 comments

I am a US citizen working for a US company living abroad. I plan to qualify for the foreign income exclusion this year and Iโ€™m wondering if it would be ok to adjust my taxes now so I have less withheld and get paid more now. I could use an extra $1200 cash a month instead of paying it to taxes and having to wait to get it back next year. Does anyone else do this? Thanks!

How do you protect your tech gear from theft while travelling?

by @alejandrow 10yr 10 years ago  | 6 comments

So, Iโ€™m about to become a digital nomad later this year. Right now Iโ€™m in the preparation mode and looking for useful information that will help me to achieve living like a digital nomad without having to deal with beginner problemsโ€ฆ

I have traveled before, so I have some experiences, but not long term travelling in poor countries. Just been living abroad in several countries in Europe for 3-6 months in the same place. I will visit both South East Asia and South America, so I would like to have some helpful tips about security and how to avoid theft.

So basically, if youโ€™d like to share your experiences: How do you protect your tech gear from theft while travelling?

Should I get a loan to get my startup up and running while travelling?

by @traveller99 10yr 10 years ago  | 4 comments

I am thinking about becoming a digital nomad. I already have a startup in my mind thatโ€™s ready to be build. I will make this website by myself, it should take me roughly about 2 to 3 months to complete everything. From that point on it will be a matter of time before it will generate a income. Before my website will make a steady income i would need money to survive. I do have some savings but it is not enough to keep me on my feet for half a year or longer. Is it wise to take a loan as a Digital Nomad to make the startup allot easier?
