Driving from Italy to Croatia..how to handle passport?

in Croatia by @ld 4yr  | 3 comments

Hello, we are US citizens that have been able to stay in Italy past our standard visa stay due to covid. Now we must leave. We want to drive to Croatia as our โ€œout of EUโ€ stay. But Iโ€™m now wondering what considerations I need to take care of for my visa. I wonโ€™t go through an airport and get my passport stamped. But I assume I need to get my passport stamped as a way to prove Iโ€™m out of the EU.

Anyone else travel in and out of Schengen zone via car? Or know what I should do to properly handle the visa situation? I get unclear answers online. Hmm.

Appreciate your help!

I don't have the answer to your question, but have you verified to be sure that as a US citizen you are allowed to enter Croatia? I believe that their border is open for the citizens of a select few countries.

right, I'm working on getting more info on that..if possible. It'll be tricky because I'm not coming from the USA, I've been in Europe for 6 months, but still I have a US passport.

Hey @ld,

My girlfriend has an american passport : I can confirm that you will be able to cross the border in Croatia with an american passport. It's better if you have some proof that you were not in the US recently.

Croatia has a website dedicated for tourism in the current Covid situation. I cannot post link as i am a new member but you should be able to find it easily. You can even email the border police if you have any questions.

Regarding the question of getting your passport stamped : Croatia is NOT in Shengen as you understood. So my understanding is that you will have to cross the border by car and they will stamp it there. Probably worth to send an email to the border police to check that part !

Best/quickest way from Italy to Croatia?

in Croatia by @ld 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,

We are in Umbria until August 31. We've been here since March, but crisis-level visa extensions are over. After that we have to leave the EU. We would like to stay out of the USA (our home) due to it's covid crisis, at the same time we want to be responsible about travel. Ideally we would not travel at all, rather stay hidden in the countryside of Umbria forever until covid is more under control globally, but here we are!

So we must leave the Schengen zone. We should avoid USA. We should avoid long air travel.

We were thinking Croatia.

Do you recommend a route to Croatia? We are open to long train rides. Ideally not long ferry rides. Is there a ferry route under 4 hours? I read about it...I don't see it. If not, the other option is to make our way north and up over to Croatia via train.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and insights!

Thanks.

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari , Italy by @mitch_dina 5yr 5 years ago  | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

Best things to do in Vicenza, Italy?

in Italy by @greysonxcole 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hey everyone!

Iโ€™ll be spending a few weeks (11/25 - 12/15) in Vicenza, Italy and want to know if you have any recommendations on things to do/see while there. Iโ€™m open to traveling to nearby countries and cities as my schedule will be pretty open. I love being outdoors - hiking, swimming, etc., but realize December isnโ€™t the most ideal time for those types of things.

What are your favorite things to do around here?

Thanks,
Greyson

What are wise ways to handle health insurance, as a USA person

by @azurio 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi! Iโ€™m still struggling to figure out how to handle health insurance.

What handy guides have you found to help figure out USA health care?

Iโ€™m struggling with:

  • When itโ€™s okay/wise to go without coverage while abroad, these days.
  • What other type of insurance I want while traveling, and whether it needs to be a supplement to USA insurance or if it can be a replacement.
  • Etc.

Above all, I think I want out. I wonder about success stories in moving to some other system/location, and the method youโ€™d recommend: additional citizenship, a special visa, etc.

I have searched this topic and struggled with it, so summaries and clarity are super helpful. I appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks so much!

Quaint small towns/villages in Italy and/or France

in Italy by @theunisk 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Any recommendations for a few weeks stay in a small, quiet town or village somewhere in Italy/France during summer ? Open to any setting, by the seaside, in the mountains or the countryside - Iโ€™d like to get a feel for local life (outside the cities) in a charming place.
Having hiking routes available nearby would be a bonus, but not required.
Internet speed will not be very important, so that does not need to be taken into consideration.
Iโ€™ll likely be doing both Italy and France, so suggestions for both would be great.

Does the 90 day Schengen rule apply inside of Croatia?

in Croatia by @larry_oz 8yr 8 years ago  | 11 comments

Hi all, need some help with schengen fuzzinessโ€ฆ Iโ€™m a US citizen.

Does any know if the 90 day rule applies inside of Croatia. Iโ€™m seeing that Croatia isnโ€™t part of schengen but adopts the same visa aquis. This isnโ€™t clear to me.

If someone has a definitive answer please let me know as Iโ€™m approaching the 90 day rule in my travel plans and I want to hit Croatia and not have it count.

Thanks in advance.

How is Croatia as a destination for digital nomads?

Iโ€™m thinking of spending August-October in Europe; Berlin was a strong contender, but Iโ€™m hearing good stuff about Zagreb. Anyone have any experiences (good or bad) to share?

Staying in Italy for a few months - internet?

in Italy by @ld 8yr 8 years ago  | 8 comments

Hello,

My boyfriend and I would like to spend a few months in Italy - nowhere major like Milan, maybe Tuscany region or more south. Iโ€™ve been there before, but not in a work capacity. We need decent internet both where we stay (maybe airbnb) and are hoping to find some cafes or work spots around.

I donโ€™t see too much on here about Italy. And it certainly doesnโ€™t make any list of โ€˜best places for digital nomadsโ€™ - so Iโ€™m curious about that. Is it a bad spot for people like us that survive off of the internet? Is it not reliable?

I appreciate any insights from your experiences!

How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

by @leerosen 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

Any thoughts on how to deal with continuity when switching dentists all the time? Dentist #1 says โ€œweโ€™ll keep an eye on #12 and #14โ€, but then you go to Dentist #2 and they donโ€™t have the records (nor do I understand all the gibberish being spoken by the dentist). Do you keep your records and take them with you?

Also, what about x-rays. Some dentists want to take some for each โ€œnew patientโ€. Seems like having x-rays all the time canโ€™t be good. Do you ask for copies or what? Iโ€™ve been dentist hopping for about 18 months now and am beginning to wonder how to keep my 54-year-old teeth in the best shape.

Any advice from those doing this long term?

Nomads in Split, would anyone like to have a meet up this month?

in Split , Croatia by @hannahvictorius 8yr 8 years ago  | 34 comments

Iโ€™ve chatted to a few of you on the threads these past few days, and now I want to meet you all!

How about next Wednesday 23rd Sept? Iโ€™m happy to arrange it and was thinking To Je To would be a good place. Let me know if another date would be better.

Whoโ€™s in? If we can get more than 10 I might be able to make it an official Nomad List meet up.

How do I handle the PayPal limit lift?

by @matthieudrula 9yr 9 years ago  | 15 comments

Hi,
I have been using Paypal since Iโ€™m nomading and contracting. However now it asks to confirm my identity.
I created my account when I was in the UK, now slow traveling, my account is bound to the UK and Iโ€™m feel like Iโ€™m *****ed since they ask for information about my previous UK address.
They are talking about limit lifts. Anyone using paypal has a nomad with no home address?

How to handle problems with US Address Verification

by @simplgy 9yr 9 years ago  | 10 comments

Iโ€™ve been a Traveling Mailbox member for about a year. My last yearโ€™s tax return, all financial institutions, vehicle registration, and driverโ€™s license all reflect this address.

It looks like an apartment address: 75 N Woodward Ave #####, Tallahassee FL.

In the last few weeks, Iโ€™ve been having problems.

  1. I requested a voter registration renewal in Florida and it was denied on the grounds that I am using a business address
  2. My bank (Ally) contacted me, saying that my address was a โ€œmaildropโ€ location, and needed to be a physical domicile.

My theory is that this Traveling Mailbox location has been flagged as a maildrop in whatever database these agencies use and will continue to be a problem, so Iโ€™m looking for a new strategy.

Questions:

  • What am I supposed to do? I donโ€™t have or want a permanent home.
  • If these agencies object to my address, will the IRS or the California tax board? (audits? residency challenges?)

Some ideas:

  • Use a โ€œnext of kinโ€ address for legal reasons, and traveling mailbox as a mailing address. My bank allowed this. I think this means I need to declare residency in the state of my next-of-kin, which is not preferred.
  • Find a smaller mail services provider that is less likely to be flagged as a business/maildrop location (They may be flagged later and Iโ€™ll have to change addresses. Iโ€™ll miss the digital scanned mail feature. Also, is any mail service legal to use as a residence now?)

@nickdanforth, you had this same problem in Apr 2015, any solutions work well for you?

@nomadicme, sounds like youโ€™ve had the same problem, too.

What can we do about this, folks? Seems like as full-time travellers we should be able to pick any state in the US to be our residence, but banning certain types of addresses is really making it difficult.

Anyone want to sail Croatia with cool people this summer?

in Croatia by @zingaro 9yr 9 years ago  | 11 comments

Ahoy, Digital Nomads!

Have you thought about what to do this summer? How does this sound: a week aboard one of 6 beautiful Bavaria 47 Cruisers navigating the Croatian coast in June and July. Weโ€™re looking for friendly, relaxing, adventure-loving crew from different cultures to join us: non-profit! If thatโ€™s not the perfect way for digital nomads to recharge their batteries, I donโ€™t know what is.

Take a look at naleiayachting.com and feel free to get in touch and ask me any questions. I would love to get to know some of you and discuss this fascinating lifestyle.

Who said sailing the med was only for the rich and famous?
