Finding a place in London for a month on the east side?

in London , United Kingdom by @autumnflame 8yr  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m planning to stay in London for about a month in August-September, to coincide with an industry workshop thatโ€™s happening there at the beginning of September, and would really love to find a spot in or near the Brick Lane/Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area. AirBnB seems pricy, but Iโ€™m unsure of how easy it is to get a place via SpareRoom.

Factors/Questions

  • Budget: hoping to stay under ยฃ700, willing to go up to ยฃ800 for a perfect place right near Brick Lane
  • Looking for a furnished private room in a flatshare; Iโ€™m pretty okay with a closet with a bed, so long as itโ€™s a clean, cozy closet.
  • Solo lady, so nowhere too dodgy. (My tolerance is about โ€œNew York at night in the hipster areasโ€-level. Mexico City in the historical district at night was a bit much for me.)
  • Anyone know how easy it is to get a space in SpareRoom without actually being in the city? Or am I better served getting a hostel for a few days and accommodation-hunting then? I worry about not finding a space if I put it off until Iโ€™m there, as evidenced by my thinking about this six months beforehand. :stuck_out_tongue:
  • On that note, is that a time around when it might be harder to find accommodation, like university term starting or something?
  • Is it easy enough to find a place from mid-month to mid-month, or is it mostly going to be whole months? (I guess this wouldnโ€™t be as much of a concern if itโ€™s a week-to-week.)
  • Is it easy to get a space without a local bank account? DNing and all. Cash wouldnโ€™t be an issue.
  • How is the cafe-working culture in London? Is free decent wifi and outlets a common thing in coffee shops? Iโ€™m not super-thrilled with the idea of coworking spaces; the prices feel a bit high for me, and I actually kinda like working with a bustle around me, so long as thereโ€™s power and internet. Iโ€™ll probably look into it if it turns out there arenโ€™t really a lot of cafes equipped to do that sort of thing though.
  • โ€ฆ are there any questions I should be asking or issues I should be considering?

I realize itโ€™s a lot of questions, but anything helps! Thanks!

@jacobjay 8yr

I used to live here and go back very now and then definitely one of my fave areas. But the regular monthly rentals for sublets are at least ยฃ800 around here these days as itโ€™s tech-central (or Silicon Roundabout as we call it, after Old Street roundabout) with everyone working there pushing eastwards looking for better rents, youโ€™re more likely to get a better deal out towards (but not in) Stratford (trace along the canal looking for neighbourhoods). Whilst commuting will add to your costs itโ€™s still not much different than most coffees, and frankly anywhere along the canals are a delight to walk/cycle.

You may however find a summer sublet, take a ganders at GumTree, Craigslist and itโ€™s not entirely unheard of to see people on Couchsurfing list places (if thereโ€™s a London flats group) I like to find sublets this way, but FB is indeed the obvious choice. (Potentially you might qualify in LondonStartupFlatsโ€ฆ)

An alternative to these is The Collective, which is organised coliving (like WeLive) and just about within your budget yet includes a coworking space etc!

The pressure on cafรฉs from laptop is enormous, if you rotate a few hours amongst a bunch you might get by, although power sockets are not common. There are endless awesome coffeeshops (such as The Department of Coffee and Social Affairs, Timberyard, Store Street Espresso, edgier little places like The Old Shoreditch Station โ€ฆ check out FourSquare of course, and thereโ€™s also a bunch of WiFi/coffee apps), you really neednโ€™t ever set foot in a chain.

Google Campus is a proper coworking space and is free, if you get there first thing after they open youโ€™re pretty much guaranteed a space. Otherwise only if youโ€™re luckyโ€ฆ

London is not dodgy, youโ€™ll be fine anywhere north of the river. (And is one of the safest places to push your tolerance a bit  )

If youโ€™re flexible on timings and willing to wait a bit longer, youโ€™ll find mid-month short lets but otherwise itโ€™ll almost entirely be month-to-month, however always ask the person leaving or going away might want some flexibility too. Late September onwards will be difficult (new semester) if you move your dates forward a bit it should easy getting rooms when students are away over summer. Personally Iโ€™d want to see the place, but some street view and a skype walkaround should pass muster.

A private sublet wonโ€™t be a problem without a bank account just use TransferWise or whatnot to settle up, but make sure youโ€™ll get your deposit back similarly or as cash. Forget agencies.

Since the last time I was there it seemed everyone was using contact payments, I didnโ€™t once need cash. (Thus a bankcard with contactless is desirable, else a smartphone/ApplePay; works on transport too.)

Hmm, the Collective sounds interesting, but it seems like they only have 9-month lets (or a short-term 3-month one thatโ€™s completely sold out). Not sure if I qualify for Google Campus, being neither a startup (nor employed by one) nor an entrepreneur - but Iโ€™ll dig around and see.

The rest sounds like itโ€™s eminently manageable, otherwise! Thank you for the help!

Hey, seems like you definitely found the coolest spot to hang out in London. AirBnB is definitely overpriced in that city, even with the monthly discounts. If you canโ€™t find anything on SpareRoom since your stay is only going to be about a month long Iโ€™d suggest checking out Facebook groups for flatshares. I think you might find what youโ€™re looking for over there. Just type in โ€œLondon flatsharesโ€, โ€œLondon roommatesโ€ or whatever on the FB search box and you should be able to find something good. Also, I think youโ€™d be fine without a UK bank account especially if youโ€™re looking six months out in advance.

As for coffeeshops, the Whitechapel area is loaded with them! All of London City really. My go-to spot was this place called Javaโ€™U right by Brick Laneโ€ฆ always seemed to be a really workable space whenever I camped out there. And East London just has that vibe. :sunglasses: But, another thing I would do was head out to more bougie parts like Camden and Kensington to work out of Costaโ€™s chains. All in all, I think you could totally do the coffeeshop thing over coworking spaces if your set on it.

Anyways, best of luck and hope you enjoy your time there! Londontown is really like no other. Btw, really digginโ€™ the artwork :v:

Ah, thank you for all the info! Iโ€™ll take a gander at FB groups as well, that hadnโ€™t occurred to me. If I can find a spot near Brick Lane, Javaโ€™U looks pretty great as a working spot.

Thanks for the compliment on the art, too! Looking forward to my time in London, fell in love with the city a few years ago and always wanted to come back.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

I've got where 8 days to get from Tallinn to London - where should I visit?

in Tallinn , Estonia by @kaizenpreneur 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Iโ€™m heading to Tallinn next month to pick up my e-residency. Iโ€™ve built some time into my schedule, giving me 8 days or so to get from Tallinn to London for a meeting.

Looking for ideas on what route to take / places to visit or if there any good DN locations on-route.

One of my current ideas is to travel to Stockholm and take the train down to Copenhagen and then potentially the train down to Hamburg before train/fly to London.

But Iโ€™m open to suggestions and happy to fly or train it.

Thanks in advanceโ€ฆ

Worried about English fluency when finding a job in Ireland?

in Ireland by @gonzalezveroni94 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi Nomads!

Iโ€™m Veronica, a spanish graduate of computer science. I moved to Dublin to get a job and I have an interview next week. I have a good fluency for now but I am worried I will not be able to speak to my co-workers about specific topics because I am not a native speaker. I can talk about general things but I worry my english is not good enough to talk about what I am trained in.

Does anyone else face this problem when moving to new countries? If so, how did you overcome this? Thanks!!

Where is the best place to live in London for digital nomads?

in London , United Kingdom by @nicholasdnewell 8yr 8 years ago  | 35 comments

Iโ€™m moving to London for a year and would like to know where Iโ€™ll have the best โ€œaccessโ€ to other digital nomads as well as facilities such as coworking spaces. If possible (I know itโ€™s asking a lot for London), Iโ€™d prefer to live somewhere cheap (a relative term I know, but Iโ€™m looking to spend no more than ยฃ1,000), but still have the aforementioned items. Any help, guidance, or just simple insider advice would be much appreciated! Thank you =)

Anyone know of a room to rent in London from 24/09?

in London , United Kingdom by @zosiaswidlicka 9yr 9 years ago  | 0 comments

Hello, my boyfriend and I are looking for a room or flat to rent in London for a month starting 24th September. South East would be ideal but weโ€™re not too picky. AirBnB results are a bit uninspiring/pricey and Spare Room is full of rubbish so if any nomads are looking to fill their room weโ€™ll gladly sublet off you! Not looking to spend more than ยฃ900/month tops. Thanks!
