Do you have a strategy for finding what to do in the city?

by @ifdattic 9yr  | 12 comments

Anyone want to share their strategy/tips for finding out what to do when you arrive at new location, and/or finding about ongoing events (for example when staying for longer term)?

As a former bartender in Chicago and a traveler I usually go to a nicer bar where I am. I go about 2 hours before they get busy - enough time for the night bartender to come on and get set up and then I sit close to the register which they will always come back to a start up a conversation. I tip very well and before I know it I have a mini itinerary of all the off the beaten track places to check out.

i tend to google coworking and coliving spaces in the city iโ€™m going to, then go hang out there and see what comes of it. that usually exposes me to social enterprise/collaborative communities type lenses on that city.

Do you use the same strategy when youโ€™re visiting the city for the short time (say couple of days)? Donโ€™t have experience with co-working spaces, but from recent looking about them found that a lot of them donโ€™t go for shorter periods than a month, and even then might now have availability.

Google

Blogs can be good, especially if you find some decent ones written by expats or other digital nomads, rather than travel blogs who spend a couple of days in a spot and then do a โ€œ10 Best Things to do in Xโ€ type post. If you can find a few good, local foodie bloggers then all the better. Expats are hit and miss - some are better at showing whatโ€™s available in a place than the locals because they are looking at things with fresh eyes. Others are more about how to transplant their lifestyle.

Other than Meetup (which Iโ€™ve never used), hunt around for local specific event sites.

Wikivoyage, a worldwide travel guide wiki run by the same foundation as Wikipedia, is sometimes quite useful. Coverage is spotty, though; some areas are very good, others not.

going to coworking spaces has served me well in this regard: the people there tend to be local, the backgrounds and interests are super mixed (not just others that do the exact same thing youโ€™re doing) and thus you get exposure to all sorts of ongoing events and happenings

in addition to this meetup.com, the city channels on #nomads and couchsurfing are good places to look around

I prefer to ride the public transportation system and get an overview of main areas (e.g., Bangkok Skytrain), and then visit museums related to my interests (e.g., Deutsche Technical Museum in Munich) and ask questions of locals and museum guides or while having coffee. In that way I have both a broad sense of the city and more specific information filtered by interests and people interested in learning.

I like to sit down at a bar/cafe in the university area of a town and talk to people. Most of the best things Iโ€™ve found to do in cities are by word-of-mouth recommendations.

Lost is the art of striking up a conversation and getting information from locals and possibly making friends. A lot of travelers dont really learn this skill nowadays.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Where are the nomads in Mexico City?

in Mexico City , Mexico by @shellyfish 5yr 5 years ago  | 9 comments

I just landed as a n00b digital nomad in Mexico City, and I am wonderingโ€ฆ Where are all the international digital nomads hiding around here? I have been to several coworking spaces (Selina etc.) only to find A LOT of local Mexican workers and businesses. Donโ€™t get me wrong, that is all fine, but I was hoping to meet some international nomads! Any advice?

What are great outdoor activities in Salt Lake City?

in Salt Lake City , United States by @secondlife 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi,

Considering a trip to Salt Lake City area, with a side trip to Moab, UT. Thinking of renting a Class B RV (Sprinter van size) to test out Van Life.

Looking for any suggestions/input on:

  1. Organizations that might be interested in a presentation on โ€œYour website is more than a Brochureโ€. (Informative, not a sales pitch)
  2. Outdoor activities within 4h (see below)
  3. Best places to meet people interested in Tech and the outdoor activities.

Looking to do some easy to moderate:

  1. Mountain biking
  2. Cross country Skiing
  3. Rock Climbing

Wondering what months I could do each. Iโ€™d love to do a late September trip if itโ€™s not too late.

Hey everyone, any recommendations for a dentist in a Mexico city? Particularly in Roma/La Condesa neighborhoods.
Also, should I buy any dental insurance or just pay cash?

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Worried about English fluency when finding a job in Ireland?

in Ireland by @gonzalezveroni94 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi Nomads!

Iโ€™m Veronica, a spanish graduate of computer science. I moved to Dublin to get a job and I have an interview next week. I have a good fluency for now but I am worried I will not be able to speak to my co-workers about specific topics because I am not a native speaker. I can talk about general things but I worry my english is not good enough to talk about what I am trained in.

Does anyone else face this problem when moving to new countries? If so, how did you overcome this? Thanks!!

Finding a place in London for a month on the east side?

in London , United Kingdom by @autumnflame 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m planning to stay in London for about a month in August-September, to coincide with an industry workshop thatโ€™s happening there at the beginning of September, and would really love to find a spot in or near the Brick Lane/Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area. AirBnB seems pricy, but Iโ€™m unsure of how easy it is to get a place via SpareRoom.

Factors/Questions

  • Budget: hoping to stay under ยฃ700, willing to go up to ยฃ800 for a perfect place right near Brick Lane
  • Looking for a furnished private room in a flatshare; Iโ€™m pretty okay with a closet with a bed, so long as itโ€™s a clean, cozy closet.
  • Solo lady, so nowhere too dodgy. (My tolerance is about โ€œNew York at night in the hipster areasโ€-level. Mexico City in the historical district at night was a bit much for me.)
  • Anyone know how easy it is to get a space in SpareRoom without actually being in the city? Or am I better served getting a hostel for a few days and accommodation-hunting then? I worry about not finding a space if I put it off until Iโ€™m there, as evidenced by my thinking about this six months beforehand. :stuck_out_tongue:
  • On that note, is that a time around when it might be harder to find accommodation, like university term starting or something?
  • Is it easy enough to find a place from mid-month to mid-month, or is it mostly going to be whole months? (I guess this wouldnโ€™t be as much of a concern if itโ€™s a week-to-week.)
  • Is it easy to get a space without a local bank account? DNing and all. Cash wouldnโ€™t be an issue.
  • How is the cafe-working culture in London? Is free decent wifi and outlets a common thing in coffee shops? Iโ€™m not super-thrilled with the idea of coworking spaces; the prices feel a bit high for me, and I actually kinda like working with a bustle around me, so long as thereโ€™s power and internet. Iโ€™ll probably look into it if it turns out there arenโ€™t really a lot of cafes equipped to do that sort of thing though.
  • โ€ฆ are there any questions I should be asking or issues I should be considering?

I realize itโ€™s a lot of questions, but anything helps! Thanks!

Help me to come up with a better strategy to choose where to go next

by @nunoarruda 9yr 9 years ago  | 9 comments

Iโ€™m a digital nomad with a goal of visiting as many different cities as possible.

I travel each month to a different city (with good weather) in a different country and I never repeat the same country in the same year for diversity (except when visiting home).

I choose where to go next by pinpointing the top cities from the nomadlist.com (which is constantly updated according to the weather, if Iโ€™m not mistaken) in a personal Google Map, I then see whatโ€™s the nearest country according to my current location and I plan everything 1 or 2 months ahead.

In December I always go home (Portugal) to spend time with my family and then in January I start all again.

Sometimes in order to get to the โ€œnearestโ€ pinpointed country I have to take 2/3 flights which can be expensive and time consuming. This is when I think I might not be making the best move.

Do you guys have any advice that might improve my strategy?
