How do you find the public transport information of your next destination?

by @nunoarruda 7yr  | 11 comments

Probably most of you do as I do, Google it first and then research further, if needed, on official transportation websites, travel guides, blogs, etc.

I travel each month to a new city and I find this task tedious, sometimes thereโ€™s not enough information in English or there might be a handy travel planning app or uber-like app that Iโ€™m not aware of.

I wish there were a โ€œnomad listโ€ website or app for transport information where you would choose a city and be given all the transportation options (Bus? Tram? Subway? etc), how/where to buy tickets/passes and any additional useful information (trip planner, apps, maps, etc).

Do any of you relate to this?

PS: Iโ€™m a developer and I might actually try and create something to โ€œfixโ€ this if a lot of people are experiencing this same โ€œannoyanceโ€.

Try the Mooveit mobile application or their web app. They have an amazing database and real-time updates for the public transport. They support around 80 countries.

I start with Rome 2 Rio. From there, I may hop to the sites that come up on Rome 2 Rio, but often thatโ€™s enough to get me started in a new city. Then Google Maps, if available.

Usually I donโ€™t mind finding out once I am there if itโ€™s not easily available on Google, but if I really need to find out, Iโ€™d usually try to find some FB groups for backpackers / travelers / residents in that city and ask there  (I think building an app would be quite difficult for those countries where you cannot find anything online for already, as the times change all the times or sometimes there are no set times etc)

No  Google Maps on a mobile works just fine in most major cities that have any kind of formalised network of public transportation (with the exception of Vienna), including for connections from a port of entry (the only time I was confused by directions from an airport on arrival was in Shenzhen: it turned out they had just completed a brand-new subway line that ran directly to the airport but they just hadnโ€™t added it yet); if not, thatโ€™s what network maps and support staff are for. And if none of these exist, then just ask somebody.

Yeah getting to the cities from airports can be truly a hassleโ€ฆ sometimes I use transfer services like Suntransfers.com. Iโ€™ve gotten really good deals with such sites, specially when they offer shared mini-van transfers, it takes a bit longer but theyโ€™ll drop you off anywhere in the city centre and itโ€™s way cheaper than a taxi. Theyโ€™re also great for late night transfers to the airport.

My biggest issue is trying to find the best way to get to an airport from the city. Virtually all info online tells you how to get from the airport, but not the other way around! The point is that the cheapest or best way to an airport might be different from an airport.

Otherwise just use google for public transport info.

I think it also varies with how familiar & comfortable you are with the city. When I last landed in Singapore, I ended up getting a taxi because the people at Changi airport couldnโ€™t explain the EZ Link cards to me & were more interested in upselling me on other things. Taxi was faster & more direct. But once I was used to the MRT, catching the train back to the airport was easily the best & cheapest way for me.

(Basically, I now use Google Maps & Uber until Iโ€™m familiar with how a city works.)

How about asking people once youโ€™re there? I remember when I used to try doing research online and itโ€™s such a waste of time. Besides, as an introvert, I find itโ€™s a great excuse to talk to strangers.
People really need to stop depending so much on smartphones.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Public transport in Australia: Best route planning tools?

in Australia by @dunctk 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

Iโ€™m going to Australia for the first time in a week or so. Iโ€™d like to visit places like Byron (from Sydney). But Iโ€™d prefer not to rent a car.

I know Google Maps supports public transit directions in Aus, but based on my experience in London, theyโ€™re often not as useable / accurate as the native planning tools (e.g. National Rail app in the UK).

Can anyone recommend any local apps / sites for planning routes on trains, buses, etc. in Aus?

How do you stay safe on public WiFi?

by @skatkov 8yr 8 years ago  | 27 comments

Weโ€™ve seen some โ€˜coffee-spot listsโ€™ websites popping in, a lot of them consider wifi signal quality, some of them measure internet speeds. But i didnโ€™t see nobody considering Wifi AP safety.

If we consider co-working spaces, we would think that it should be safe to use internet there. But coffee shop are a different deal, especially while traveling in less touristy places. I would like to encourage community to gather a โ€˜Digital Nomad wifi access point safety checklistโ€™.

Doing work an a road we should consider safety of our computer. Itโ€™s not just a matter of your personal data, usually clients and company could be involved. I really hope everyone uses secure connection at least over the VPN while you guys are working.

There are very easy measures to avoid โ€˜men-in-the-middleโ€™ attacks and other nastyness. Lets list all the checks we can run against Access Point to verify it security at some level.

Iโ€™ll start:
โ€“ Go to access point login screen and verify that itโ€™s impossible to login with default passwords.
โ€“ Donโ€™t use wifi with WEP!

Are there any transportation planners in here?

by @rudiments 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Are there any nomads on here working as transportation planners or any type of urban planner? Iโ€™m curious about what kind of work you do on the road.

Iโ€™ve been traveling on my bicycle for the past couple years, doing a few interesting things related to planning while on the road, but not doing any work. It seems like too much of a hassle in my field, although it could be interesting to just take big jobs and move to the location for a few months to focus on the one job.

How to find flights if I don't know my destination?

by @yago1 8yr 8 years ago  | 12 comments

Hi fellow DNโ€™s
Iโ€™m searching for a DN โ€œlast minuteโ€ type website / service out there?
Maybe something similar to travelzoo.com and skyscanner.com or tripalertz.com but with more focus for DNโ€™s ? What I mean is I donโ€™t really care about the location - if I go to Mexico, Canada or Shanghai. If there is a good deal I might be seriously interested.
Maybe there is nothing like this yet in that case it would be something interesting to create.

How do you manage noise when working in public space?

by @littleshiva 8yr 8 years ago  | 15 comments

Iโ€™m an introvert: people distract and exhaust me, and my ideal working environment would be an empty room and silence. Next best is what I have whenever Iโ€™m in my own environment: the space is never empty, but itโ€™s usually silent save for ambient noise. Working from public space involves dealing with noise levels that are, for me, entirely counterproductive. Right now Iโ€™m in a hotel lounge and was settling in to focus on a magazine layout job when all of a sudden they switched the music to something loud, upbeat and with lyrics. I put my earplugs in immediately, but I can still hear that crap, and my concentrationโ€™s shot. What do you all do to manage noise when working from public space, or what are your workarounds?

In my case right now, Iโ€™m here because I need several hours of electricity, not just the two hours max I could get at my off-grid location. My noise workaround is to come to town and recharge my laptop, then go back to the country to work, but for long amounts of time, thatโ€™s not an option for me (yet โ€” but Iโ€™m working on it).

What do we need to provide for you to choose Croatia as your destination?

in Croatia by @mirko 9yr 9 years ago  | 38 comments

Hello everyone! Weโ€™re a few IT professionals from Croatia, having our own companies/startups in various cities (on the coast) but all of us also own and manage properties for tourists (villas, houses, B&Bs, et.). We would like to use those properties and connect them with our passion for IT by making them available for digital nomads out there.

Those are all high quality accommodation so during a high season I think it would be too expensive, but off season (October till April, depending on the place) weโ€™re able to cut prices A LOT because our main motivation is to network with other IT people out there and promote our location.

Obvious advantage (we believe) is that weโ€™re IT people, so Internet connection (mostly 8 Mbit to 120 Mbit cable or DSL) and other technical issues would not be a problem like in other mostly tourist-oriented places. We also have personnel to assist you in any needs you might have (laundry, paperwork, information, etc); we have contracts with surrounding restaurants and probably could get a good price-cuts for your stay; we could rearrange some space to offices or meeting rooms; because weโ€™re in several different cities (like Split and Zadar) we could arrange a โ€œtourโ€ of several cities or you can choose to be static in one of the cities, etc.

But the question remains, does this make sense to you and what do you need to make Croatia your next destination? We would love to try and meet all those requirements if possible and would appreciate any comment.

How much time did you spend researching your first destination?

by @nihilista 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m getting excited compiling a list of places I want to check out and explore. Do you think itโ€™s best to choose a 1st place that seems decent and that Iโ€™m excited about and then just take it from there? If I spent more time researching I could probably put together an itinerary that is more optimal for saving money for flights. Just curious to hear what you all did - did you spend days, weeks, months researching your first destination?

How much time do you spend researching your subsequent locations?
