I'm beginning my Nomadic journey - what advice do you have?

by @jacob_tr 8yr  | 8 comments

Hello Everyone,

On January 8, I set off on my Nomadic Journeys. I have a one way ticket to Iceland booked for a film shoot, and a flight into mainland Europe on the 20th, and from there I have no idea, and I am completely on my own.

What advice do you have? Right now I am feeling everything, from bad to good about it all, really can feel that safety/wool from underneath me get pulled away, I know Iโ€™m jumping out of my shell here.

(To give some background, Iโ€™m starting my nomad journey after having started a successful business, so financially I am set. Itโ€™s the question personally, mentally how do you cope in the beginning of leaving everything and going?)

Hey Jacob, Iโ€™d pack light, research your destinations really well and stay in each place for at least a month at a time. Traveling a little more slowly lets you get to know your destinations and some people in them much better and set down some short-term roots. Plus, a lot of Airbnbs offer great monthly discounts, so staying for 1+ month has let us stay in some great homes that we might not otherwise budget for on a nightly basis.

If youโ€™re starting off in Europe and donโ€™t have a visa for long-term stay, youโ€™ll need to eventually leave the Schengen area. A lot of people go to the Balkans and I really recommend Croatia, but we recently stumbled upon another really awesome place that most people miss. Iโ€™d check out Reunion for your off times. Itโ€™s a French island with an active volcano, awesome hiking and beautiful beaches (but a shark problem). Itโ€™s in the middle of the Indian Ocean but itโ€™s a part of the EU and the coastal communities have great living standards that are on-par with what youโ€™d expect elsewhere in the EU. Canโ€™t recommend it enough.

If our paths ever cross weโ€™d be happy to get together!

Psychologically, the thing that helped me the most was something a friend told me right before I left. If it isnโ€™t fun, you donโ€™t have to do it!

If after a week or a month or whatever, you donโ€™t like it, then you go home and do something different. Thereโ€™ll be about three days of embarrassment while you tell your friends and family โ€œJUST KIDDING!โ€ and a few financial consequences, but thatโ€™s all.

I never went back, and nomadhood has been really easier and more wonderful than I ever imagined. But remembering that I COULD go back smoothed over the moments of panic on my way out.

I started 6 months ago and one of the things Iโ€™ve learned about myself is that travelling slower is better for me. Iโ€™ve been spending a month in different cities and that means organisig a lot of travel and accommodation and co-working. The main thing that made me decide to travel slower though was that just when youโ€™re really starting to get to know a place and people and make some real connections, its time to go again. Iโ€™ve already got commitments on places I need to be for the 1st half of 2017 but from June I will be spending 3 months wherever I go.

Everyone is different, but this maybe something to consider.

The other thing that was invaluable to me once I accepted it is that its ok to not be constantly out doing things and meeting people, its ok to take some time to just relax, its exhausting otherwise.

Good luck on your travels.

One of the things that hit me was just the total feeling of being overwhelmed at the start. On top of the all the business decisions, you have a zillion other tiny decision to make every day - just stuff like you want to cook a meal and you need 4 ingredients but you can only find 3 of them at the supermarket!

It does get easier but to start with, Iโ€™d try to simplify every day decision like what to eat etc as much as possible.

Another thing Iโ€™d not do if I went back to the start is trying to stick to too strict a budget. It wasnโ€™t even like I couldnโ€™t afford things, just that I felt like I had to do things as cheaply as possible. Now, Iโ€™d rather spend a bit more, without going crazy, to have a pleasant place to live and work. It makes me more productive so actually saves me money to spend a bit more.

I can relate, @kathrynoh . Iโ€™m taking my first trip in April and I picked a place I had already been before, actually, because I wanted to feel safe and I also wanted to focus on any changes in gear, workflow, technology, etc so I can keep my business running on top speed. I also picked lodging that was beautiful, because I know Iโ€™m sensitive and respond to my environment. Itโ€™s a little pricier, but I think the peace of mind and joy of waking up in a beautiful spot will be beneficial to whatever Iโ€™m doing that day.

I was exactly in your situation 6 months ago - I bought a one way ticket and left home by myself - I started in Europe to have an easy start and then flew to a third-world country which is a totally different experience. I was scared, nervous, excited, happy, sad, etc. Thereโ€™s not much you can do to be honest - just accept that youโ€™re going to experience many different emotions and be excited to make a big personal growth
Good luck!

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Where do I get good legal advice/support to have a long-term stay in Portugal?

in Lisbon , Portugal by @mzorrilla 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hello, everyone!

My idea is to stay as low as 6 months and as long as a year (maybe, who knows) over Lisbon after doing some analysis from many cities in Europe.

I'm an Argentinian and Chilean (both nationalities) so... no Euro-pass for me (getting my Italian nationality could take 2 years easily). I'm also a remote worker and I have a really good income (I work for a Silicon Valley company) so I can show more than enough resources to stay in the country.

Everything I see online doesn't inspire me much confidence (most sites looks a bit scammy) and this is not a "vacation stay"... I want to be clear my head far away from Argentina right now. If someone has a good website, recommendations, etc I will super appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

What investment options are open to e-resident?

by @64tankman 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

I know from experience that if you have residential status in countries where IG (a broker) serves, you can buy stocks and other assets through this broker. But I wonder what doors to the stock market, asset market or broker can be unlocked with e-residency? Some banks open a terminal for customers to buy assets overseas too, is one of the e-residency friendly bank offering a good portfolio of assets to invest in?

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 5yr 5 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 5yr 5 years ago  | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Where to move for tax purposes as a non-US citizen?

by @mender 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I am a New Zealander looking to travel for a couple of years in different countries. For this purpose I would ideally like to shift my company to a lower tax territory where I will live part time, as I am currently taxed at roughly 33% in New Zealand, however itโ€™s closer to 40% when I add in all the hidden taxes.

With a move I wonโ€™t be living in NZ so Iโ€™ll no longer be obliged to pay any tax after 320 days.

I ideally would wish to be a tax resident of the country I incorporate in. What country is easiest to do this through? A large chunk of my business relies on PayPal which requires your bank account to be from the same country your company is registered. Thus I canโ€™t do anything such as BVI or small islands.

Tbh my best bet looks to be Dubai Free Zones at this point and I can do some travel in europe from there.

Property Ownership - should digital nomads buy properties?

by @sparrow_23 5yr 5 years ago  | 16 comments

I have been a digital nomad for the last couple of years. I have always worked in tech and now run a couple of profitable online businesses that give me a reliable income and allow me to fund a nomadic lifestyle.

I recently exited one of my businesses and I am considering to invest the income from the sale in properties, mainly for 2 reasons:

a) I donโ€™t want to keep wasting my money in renting apartments across the cities I stay

b) I believe in properties as investment and I want to diversify my investment portfolio (mainly stocks)

After years of constant wander from one place to another, now I am the type of digital nomad who sticks to few locations: I mainly rotate across 4 places each year (San Francisco, Medellin, Berlin, Bali). Buying a house in each of those location would be difficult and too expensive. Therefore, I was wondering if there was any sort of service that combines an investment opportunity with the ability to access different properties around the world (even if just for a limited time per year) ?

Imagine living in 4 cities per year and having a house in each place that you can exclusively use for 3 months and at the same time having your investment growing (this depending on the market, of course). Wouldnโ€™t that be great? I believe it could be done via a property fund selling you a share and giving you access to some of their properties for a limited timeframe each year.

Has anyone heard of anything like that?

Thanks!

Ko Lanta or Ko Phangan - which island is better for a digital nomad?

in Ko Lanta , Thailand by @melinda 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™m currently in Penang, Malaysia and I was thinking to head to Thailand next. What are the best islands in Thailand to get some work done? Are there any other differences between the islands?

Greece- WIFI- how is it really?

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! Iโ€™ve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We plan on renting an apartment after staying in airbnb and would like to work from the place we are staying in. Thanks so much for helping me decide if we can continue on or change plans.

Advice on phone plans? 1 year in Europe

by @larsheather 6yr 6 years ago  | 8 comments

Weโ€™re Americans planning to be in Europe for all of 2020 - approx. 90 days in each country, and alternating Schengen and non-Schengen. Our destinations will likely include four of these: Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Romania, and Spain.
Can anyone give us advice on cell phones? We would prefer to keep our current (U.S) numbers if at all possible. We donโ€™t anticipate making many local calls, but will phone the U.S. about once a week. Weโ€™ll use our phones for internet quite often.
Any advice for our situation would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather and Lars

Estonia E-Residency & CFC

in Estonia by @edusantorini 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

So, Iโ€™ve been looking into e-residency and moving my business to Estonia the past few weeks.
Iโ€™m still a tax resident in Germany and therefore fear Iโ€™ll be suspect to CFC laws. I somehow canโ€™t find any reliable info on this and I donโ€™t feel like reading through the whole law, so just wondering if anyone knows how CFC laws in EU countries come into practice. What taxes do I need to pay exactly? As soon as I cash out (dividends), as far as I can see I need to pay 20% income tax in Estonia. Then what? Of course, I would need to pay income tax in Germany. What taxes do I need to pay besides these?
And if I keep the money in Estonia/reinvest it, am I right that I wouldnโ€™t need to pay any taxes at all? Only for the money I cash out of Estonia/the business?

Iโ€™m by the way not doing this to evade taxes, taxes are secondary. I primarily simply want to move my business activities out of Germany + the all-digital concept and the bookkeeping service of agencies like leapIN are interesting.

Re-Registering Self Employment to Another Country

by @hello513 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi!
Iโ€™m doing research about how I can register as a self-employed to another country, and I want to ask for some advice.

I have a Hungarian citizenship. I spent the last 4 and a half years abroad. For two years now I have a registered self-employment in Denmark. During this time I have always had an address there even though I was physically there for only half a year. My address was registered at a friendโ€™s place. I want to get rid of my self-employment there due to the language difficulties and high taxes. And here comes the difficult part.
I donโ€™t want to register self-employment in my home country as Iโ€™m not planning going back and I donโ€™t feel supporting it with my taxes (I know, itโ€™s more personal than practical). I thought about Ireland (where I lived half a year twice), but the biggest problem is the address. I donโ€™t have plans of settling down yet, but if I donโ€™t have an address I canโ€™t have a self-employment. Somewhere I read that itโ€™s an option to get a real address, then changing the business address to a mail forwarding company.

Iโ€™m looking into what opportunities I would have to register self-employment somewhere (not in my home country), and continue nomad style of moving from country to country frequently. Is there anyone who had been in a similar situation?
