Rome is an undeniably beautiful city with incredible historical landmarks and architecture. Many people appreciate the rich cultural atmosphere, enjoyable walking routes, and the general friendliness of locals. The food scene is a strong point too, though it's important to avoid tourist traps to find quality dining. Rome also offers convenient travel options to other parts of Italy, making it a good hub for exploring the country.
However, living in Rome presents significant challenges. The city is frequently described as overcrowded and chaotic, with inefficient and poorly connected public transport that often struggles to manage the volume of people. Rent is high relative to the quality of housing, and the city can feel dirty and poorly maintained. The coworking scene is underdeveloped, which can be limiting for remote workers, and the summer heat can be extreme. Making deeper personal connections may also be difficult, as many locals form tight social circles early in life. Overall, while Rome excels as a tourist destination, long-term living comes with trade-offs that may not suit everyone.

A walking stereotype. Overcrowded, messy, expensive. Literally nothing works. There are more USA people than in Lisbon, which I thought was impossible. Yes, Italians are awesome and food is great.

It´s difficult to make friends here. Generally speaking, lifelong friends are made in school and then there´s family. People are very nice and sociable but forget about making friends. Lots of really bad restaurants (tourist traps) so you have to be careful where you go. I´ve lived here for two years so I have gotten to know some good places. Tons of tourists and overcroweded public transport. Yes, it´s a beautiful city but quite unlivable.

Lived in Rome for 6 months and I would not recommend it. There are few good working cafes or co-working spaces, the city is dirty, nightlife isn't great, rent is expensive for what you get, public transport is terrible and the metro is poorly connected (only 3 lines), drivers are crazy, few start-up related events, extremely hot in summer, etc.
Some of the positives include the historical sights, beautiful walking routes, you can easily visit other parts of Italy, people seem friendly enough, decent-ish expat community.

Rome is probably the most beautiful city in the world, art, history, good food. It is chaotic but people are friendly, definitely to recommend

Rome has tourist fatigue. Servers are curt and it's hard to find a decent restaurant.
