Rome is undeniably beautiful and packed with historic landmarks and art, which makes it worthwhile for a short visit. Many found one to two days sufficient to see the main sights. The city’s walkable layout and stunning visuals add to the experience. People are generally friendly, and the food can be very good—though tourists often need to be careful to avoid subpar, overpriced restaurants aimed at visitors.
However, living in Rome presents many challenges. It’s crowded year-round, especially in tourist-heavy areas, and the city struggles with cleanliness. Public transport is unreliable and poorly connected, particularly the metro, which is limited to just three lines. Summer heat can be extreme, and many describe the city as chaotic and expensive—especially relative to the housing quality. Making friends can be difficult beyond casual interactions, and the nightlife and coworking options are lacking for those considering a longer stay.
Rome remains a top destination for sightseeing and short cultural trips, but it may not be ideal for those seeking a longer-term, functional urban lifestyle.

A walking stereotype. Overcrowded, messy, expensive. Literally nothing works. There are more USA people than in Lisbon, which I thought was impossible. Yes, Italians are awesome and food is great.

It´s difficult to make friends here. Generally speaking, lifelong friends are made in school and then there´s family. People are very nice and sociable but forget about making friends. Lots of really bad restaurants (tourist traps) so you have to be careful where you go. I´ve lived here for two years so I have gotten to know some good places. Tons of tourists and overcroweded public transport. Yes, it´s a beautiful city but quite unlivable.

Lived in Rome for 6 months and I would not recommend it. There are few good working cafes or co-working spaces, the city is dirty, nightlife isn't great, rent is expensive for what you get, public transport is terrible and the metro is poorly connected (only 3 lines), drivers are crazy, few start-up related events, extremely hot in summer, etc.
Some of the positives include the historical sights, beautiful walking routes, you can easily visit other parts of Italy, people seem friendly enough, decent-ish expat community.

Rome is probably the most beautiful city in the world, art, history, good food. It is chaotic but people are friendly, definitely to recommend

Rome has tourist fatigue. Servers are curt and it's hard to find a decent restaurant.
