I'm looking for some honest opinions: Are Italians welcoming to Asians?

I completely understand the frustration caused by rude and disrespectful Asian tourists. However, after reading about the backlash against tourists and nomads from Spain, and other asian travelersโ€™ experience in Italy I want more data. Maybe itโ€™s just certain cities in Italy?

I'm curious about why the situation is different in Italy. My partner loves Italy, and we want to move to different cities to experience the culture
filippobo 3mo
Itโ€™s hard to tell, but generally italians are not so open to foreigners in general (asian tourists actually are among the most polite though). Obviously it depends on the city: the situation is much better in large cities like Milan and Turin, and worse in small towns.
Feel free to ask if you have more questions!

Avoid the swamped tourist shitholes like Florence, Venice, Rome and focus on business cities or midsize and smaller towns that need tourists and you will be fine. Wife is Korean and never has an issue with that stuff in Italy. I'd second Turin as an Italy recommendation plus all the little towns in the Langhe: Alba, Asti, etc. Learn a little Italian too (at least enough to order an espresso or a bottle of wine)...goes a long way and is a fun language to speak :)

Hey fellow nomads! Iโ€™m new hereโ€”anyone currently in Turin or Milan?
nataly 2mo
Hii Iโ€™m thinking of going to Florence next month for a few days. Has anyone stayed at the social hub?
nonno84 2mo
If you can get a car and do a road trip in the middle of Italy in Spring, better staying in small towns. Apart from a few diheads, that you can find everywhere, people will be welcoming if you act like a respectful person interested in knowing the place and the people. I'm from a 2000 inhabitants village in the middle of Marche and most of the time when a foreigner passes nearby or even more stops at the bar, I swear, you people are just curious and surprised. And most of them would love to communicate, but they cannot.

I never saw hate towards Asians by Italians . Asians are well respected also because they have many businesses here like China markets and sushi restaurants, almost all cities have at least a big china market. Asians are hard workers and they never cause a problem to our country, then I think yours is a unnecessary concern my friend.
Hey Nataly, nice to meet you. Are you passing just by Florence or also other cities?
nataly 2mo
Just Florence! Well this time around just Florence for some thrift shopping ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Are you in Florence or traveling around?
I am btw Milan and Turin
You will live Florence
Btw depending by the days you are staying
You can take advantage and visit also Bologna, Roma, Milan
They are just few hour by fast train
love
nataly 2mo
Yesss I've been there before and one of my favorites besides Sicily.
Ciao a tutti! I'm a newbie digital nomad, born and raised in Sweden but with Italian roots (hence my name). I want to connect with my roots and looking to travel Italy more in the upcoming years. I'm very flexible on exact destination, but happy to meet up with other digital nomads, entrepreneurs or startup founders. To co-work, enjoy off-time, hike, etc. I'm also looking into brushing up my Italian. If anyone's game to connect during 2025 or onward, let's get in touch. / Dante
I am in italy from Oktober 4th close to Volterra/Toskana. And I am looking for a place to stay longer. I wonder if there is a nomad community or any recommended City

If you pass in the area of Jesi/Ancona ping me. You can find me also in all the hospitality platforms (Couchsurfing, BeWelcome, Trustroots and so on)
Awesome, I'll reach out when I'm in the area. โœŒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š Grazie Mille

Hello everyone! someone in Turin?
Heyy iโ€™ll be in venice between 30-31 and 1 april. Who is up? :)
Hey there folks
Going to the north of Italy
Wanting to rent a car but Iโ€™m not in my home country and I cannot process the international license
I just have my national driver license

I will be able to rent a car?
Thx!
nonno84 15d
The agency usually wants to see your driver's license, but they never asked me for the international one even if I have it. I remember once I also asked them "do you need to make a copy of this one too" and they answered that the Italian one was enough. I suppose that they don't care, but then the police are another thing. True also that compared to other countries there isn't a lot of police on the streets and if you drive fine and the car is ok they rarely stop you
Heyyy Mauro thx for the response
I forgot to mention Iโ€™m from Argentina

So I was actually asking if foreigners rent a car without the international one?

All the info you shared is super beneficial anyways so thank youuuu
nonno84 15d
If you already have an idea of where you want to get it, maybe you can contact an agency there just to be sure and have a solution. And if you've never driven a car here, be aware that it can be stressful, and I wouldn't drive a rental car in cities like Palermo or Napoli without at least a coverage for scratches (in Palermo and Tunisia it saved me)
I will go to trento do you recommend a local agency instead of hertz?

Thank you for that advice on the south but my focus is drive around the Dolomites!
nonno84 15d
Over there driving is not really a problem
Oh really ? This are really awesome news !!!
I think I might have to negotiate with agencies from what Grok told me hehe

You say there is not too much police stopping you here right ? Is that what you mean?
nonno84 15d
Police tend to focus on trucks and vans
Thx for the info
Appreciate it!
nthnjns 14d
I've never been asked in 10 yrs of driving there (US) or my wife (SK). My advice for driving in Italy: get the smallest car possible. They'll try to give you an upgrade to the big car for free but don't mess with that. Smaller cars are much easier to park and maneuver on the tiny one way streets in the small towns...last time they gave me a big Mercedes for free I ripped the side view mirror off...
nthnjns 14d
Trentino is nice for a drive. There is a cool loop around the mountain you can do that ends at Lago di Garda, which I would recommend.
nthnjns 14d
Also easy drive from Trentino

Panda, Y, Punto, 500, or equivalent, no more. With my 15 yo Punto one year ago I almost got stuck between two buildings in a little street close to Iseo suggested by Gmaps, walls full of scratches and black signs ๐Ÿ˜…
nthnjns 13d
Totally. 500 or Pandas are the best.
