What questions should one ask themself before embarking into the nomadic lifestyle?
& what would your answer be to said question?
what questions to ask are pretty personal but Iโd say make sure to read the bad stuff too. there is a lot of โliving the dreamโ crap out there that completely glosses over some of the pain points of being a nomad. some of how painful it is depends on how you work. are you a FTE just working remotely or are you a freelancer who depends on new projects constantly coming in so you can put food on the table. The latter is much harder as a nomad IMO.
As far as questions, there are practical and psychological.
What will you do when all of your cards are denied in a country and you have no cash?
what will you do when your laptop is stolen so you canโt work?
What will you do when your project falls through and suddenly you have no income this month?
What will you do when you have to do a video call and your internet goes out?
or
What will you do to make friends/have relationships when youโre constantly moving?
How will you handle being lonely, as we all inevitably are sometimes?
How will you handle being homesick?
People make it look like an easy life. Sometimes it is. Sometimes itโs really not. Make sure you research the really not because thatโs the stuff that will throw a wrench in your works.
@wanderingdev These are some very great points you bring to the table. Thankโs again for also sharing in your input. You bring to light some important, and very real, questions to the table.
One question, this is personal and itโs fine if you donโt answer, but Iโm curious: are you happy as a nomad? It seems you always bring up the topic of loneliness. Sorry, looks like itโll actually be two questions - as a nomad, are you escaping from something, searching for something, or are you just passionate about travelling?
Iโm happy as a nomad, bit occasional loneliness is part of the deal and that fact is frequently ignored. People like to talk about all the good stuff. I prefer to talk about the real stuff. Everyone is probably both escaping and searching to some extent, if theyโre honest about it. But I also just love to travel.
Iโve been working for my company for over six years and made the move to remote work last July. The company is based in FL but I live in NYC. Iโve mostly been working from coffee shops and hotel lounges but I must admit, itโs gotten quite lonely sometimes and I occasionally miss having an office environment.
@wanderingdev, Iโve decided to make it a goal to work strictly from co-working spaces as I transition to a nomadic lifestyle. Whatโs your experience with them overall? (If thatโs a fair question to ask.) Do you see/interact with the same people for days/weeks?
I planned to do this originally when moving to NYC, however, the cost for a shared desk is roughly $600/mo so I never committed to it.
I donโt work from coworking spaces as a nomad so I canโt comment. Iโm thinking about adding it in occasionally though for the social aspect. When I worked in the US, my company had offices in a coworking space and I got to know some of the other people but generally they kept to themselves. But it depends a lot on the space I think.
I think itโs always good to check out local co-working spaces. Some are super social and make it real easy to get connected and make friends, which is incredible on the road. Others, not so much. Really just depends on the culture of the space.
Iโd recommend checking each space out for a day or two before jumping into a longer (and more expensive) commitment.

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!
Winter is coming and Iโm feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.
I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?
How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

On January 8, I set off on my Nomadic Journeys. I have a one way ticket to Iceland booked for a film shoot, and a flight into mainland Europe on the 20th, and from there I have no idea, and I am completely on my own.
What advice do you have? Right now I am feeling everything, from bad to good about it all, really can feel that safety/wool from underneath me get pulled away, I know Iโm jumping out of my shell here.
(To give some background, Iโm starting my nomad journey after having started a successful business, so financially I am set. Itโs the question personally, mentally how do you cope in the beginning of leaving everything and going?)
I am curious if anyone here is traveling while also working on their electronic music productions. I know there are a few โrealโ musicians here (respek!), but I am even more interested in finding my digital brethren.
If youโre out there, how do you manage to do it? Granted, it has become a lot more feasible in the past 5 years or so, but not entirely problem-free.
Do you have a more comprehensive set up at your home base that complements your mobile studio or are you 100% mobile? Do you have a MIDI controller in your backpack/suitcase at all times? What about the monitors? While weโre on the topic, would you maybe care to share your setup (DAW, interfaces, controllers, peripherals)?
Hereโs my situation right now: MacBook Pro with Ableton Live, AKG headphones, a simple/tiny m-audio MIDI controller, an Apogee MiC for recording samples & voice. So far, nothing for the digital interface (apart from the built-in one) or monitors.

Now, looking from a broader perspective, do you think we should travel into countries which are going to use the tax money (which we will contribute to) to finance military campaigns with heavy human rights violations and consequences against civilian lives? Isnโt that like crowdfunding war crime campaigns? How do other people observe such cases? Originally, I am from the Netherlands. Since january 2016, I have been working remotely all around the world. But even though I havenโt been in the Netherlands this year, I am still paying taxes there. Iโm still registered as a citizen.
I have to unregister in the Netherlands as a citizen. But if I donโt register somewhere else, or have a freelance status or company somewhere else, I would still have to pay 50%+ taxes. This is, of course, not fun at all.
So I decided to move my business elsewhere. Either get freelancer status in another country, or create a business there to send invoices from. Which brings me to my question:
What is the best country tax-wise for a Dutch freelancer?
As of now, I found two solutions:
Wether residency in an other country is required for the Dutch tax authority to not tax your world income, seems to be a grey area. However, if I unregister in Holland and send invoices from a company in a whole other country, it should be fine.
I have little or no experience. People with know-how: would you be so kind to comment on these options?
Are there alternatives I should consider?
I donโt really like to hire an agency. Iโd rather just fly to a country, fill out paperwork, incorporate there and from then on invoice from that company. If itโs too bureaucratic, I wouldnโt mind hiring a local lawyer or accountant to do it for me.
Do you know a country where there is no or a low income tax and this process is relatively easy and suitable for Dutch freelancers?
