Thanks @borowis โฆ yeah, weโre definitely not homeschoolers. Thereโs many ways to put the kids in school - we actually put them in โinternational schoolsโ (private schools) and we typically choose ones following the IB Program now. (Thereโs an awesome one here in Costa Rica called La Paz Community School that some parents have actually moved her just for the school.)
In our case, we more just โmake sure thereโs a good schoolโ or even better โmake sure thereโs a few good choicesโ in an area that we want to move to.
Here in Costa Rica, Iโve talked to one guy that moved here 15 years ago, put his kids in a local โpublicโ school (which let out at noon), then rented a cheap house down the block from the school, hired a tutor, and put his kids โin schoolโ for 3 more hours in English.
Depending on where you decide to go, there will be varying degrees of cost to educate the kids. You can do it for free - cheap, expensive, etc. Thereโs a school here called โTide Academyโ thatโs really a home school program with a couple teachers. Thereโs many of those around the world, too.
Weโre moving to Barcelona nextโฆ after applying and being accepted to a more expensive international school โฆ I was connected to someone who moved there last year from our current area. He said the public schools are good there. Although, my kids are only just learning Spanish โฆ and know zero Catalan โฆ so, I didnโt want to weigh them down too much; but thereโs also kind of โin betweenโ public/private schools - I forget what theyโre called, but like charters in the USA. Theyโre only, like, 150 Euros per month instead of 5x-10x that with a full blown International school in the city.
Anyway, thought Iโd share some of the variables with you as well. The bottom line though is that itโs impossible to know the โbest choiceโ for your child without really exploring ahead of time. And, we figure we canโt screw 'em up too bad in elementary and (now) middle school. ![ ]()
Oh, and yes, hereโs our familyโs blog, Wanderlust Living - my wife does all the writing there. Itโs more of a travel blog than โhow to family nomadโ blog at this point - but weโre likely shifting in that direction.
