Cost of Living in Willemstad

Curaçao is a beautiful island with great natural scenery and very clean, drinkable tap water available even in remote areas. It has modern healthcare with a new hospital, making it more convenient for longer stays or expats. However, getting around the island requires a car, as public transportation is unreliable and most locals own cars. The island is not suited for biking due to narrow roads, lack of sidewalks, and generally unsafe conditions for cyclists.

The cost of living tends to be high since nearly everything has to be imported and little to no agriculture happens locally. Stray dogs are commonly mentioned, and barking at night can be an issue. There are also concerns about the heavy Dutch influence and the disparity in opportunities between locals and expats. While snorkeling is available, the coral reefs are reportedly in decline. Solo travelers may also find it difficult to meet people outside of the prevalent Dutch social circles.

Curaçao is best suited for those who can rent a car and don't mind spending extra for imported goods. It’s a scenic island with solid infrastructure in terms of healthcare and water quality, but with notable downsides in transportation and social integration.
