Is Cyprus a part of Schengen?

As a US citizen, does Cyprus count towards my 3 months in Schengen? Iโ€™ve read that the South is part of Greece, the North part of Turkey, but that Cyprus is not considered Schengen. The whole thing confuses me, would love any insight.

Anyone spent time there? Recommendations? Internet?
