Willemstad, Curaçao, is a culturally rich city known for its colorful architecture and preserved historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its diverse population brings a mix of influences to the island. There are attractions like a high-quality art museum and remnants of an old fortress that are worth visiting. The tap water quality is excellent—safe to drink anywhere, even far from the main city, which makes daily life easier for travelers and residents alike. The climate is warm year-round, and healthcare has recently improved thanks to a new state-of-the-art hospital.
However, the cost of living is high because most goods are imported due to the island’s poor agricultural conditions. Nearly everyone owns a car as public transportation is unreliable and insufficient, making a vehicle a necessity for daily life. The area is not suitable for biking as roads lack shoulders or sidewalks, and traffic can be dangerous. Stray dogs are also common and can be a nuisance, especially at night. While the island offers beauty and good infrastructure in key areas, practical challenges like transport and cost are important to consider.

This island is wonderful ! I was there for a month and I fell in love with Curaçao. Just to rectify : The tap water is incredibly good to drink !! Anywhere you go you can drink tap water, even once I was in Daaibooi Beach which is 30 km away from the main city and I asked the guy at the snack bar to fill my bottle and the water was as nice as downtown !! Amazing !!
If you are a bike rider (bicycle), forget it ! You will get killed, there is no shoulder, neither sidewalks. Some roads looks like Beyrouth at a certain era, but in general they are ok. Stray dogs are everywhere. Every family ther has at least 2 dogs, and at night, you sometimes feel like Kevin Costner in Dances with wolves with all the dogs barking at the moon. Nothing grows there, but cactus do!! I crashed my drone in the 'forest' and I worked very hard to bring it back ! And I agree, if you are not a freak like I am, you will need a car.

Great island. Lived there for 20 years before I start traveling around. Don't forget it's expensive. All is imported, nothing grows there. And one other thing: you need a car. Public transport is bad and all locals have cars.

Just to recommend some changes, there is a new hospital, Curacao Medical Centre ("CMC") state of the art.

Willemstad is a city in Curaçao, located on the west side of the island, overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
The historic centre of Willemstad is one of the largest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A walk around the old city centre with its restored houses and buildings is a must. It is also a city of many cultures, which have brought their influence to the island.
There is an excellent art museum here, including works by Picasso, and the remaining buildings of the old fortress are also worth a visit.
The city was built on the sandy remains of a giant coral reef and reclaimed land, so the sand is still very visible here. Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao and is the largest city on the island. The main industries are oil refining, chemicals, and tourism.
