Would travel bloggers be interested in monetising their knowledge by becoming online travel agents/guides?

by @raj_varan 11yr  | 7 comments

Hi Guys

I am thinking of developing a startup that acts as a platform for Travel Bloggers who are on the road to act as travel agents and book flights for people and give bespoke advice on where they have travelled.

This could be a good way for people in the nomadic lifestyle to monetise their travel experiences.

However I am not a travel blogger so was wondering what nomadic bloggers thought of dedicating sometime each day to be online and take peoples queries about travel and book in flights and hotels.

The platform you are looking to build is called Plansify and was created by travel Blogger Earl from Wandering Earl. And no, it doesnโ€™t seem to bring in many clients, at least for meโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m a travel blogger and although I donโ€™t do this myself I know of many other bloggers who are already running tours in their destinations of choice and marketing them through their blog. To be honest I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s a market for this as they donโ€™t need you. They have their audience and thatโ€™s who signs up for the tours. Thereโ€™s no need for you to get involved as they know their route, their readers and what they want to show.

This product already exists in various forms and isnโ€™t very lucrative.

I do this kind of work on the side and it is tedious and lengthy work with little return. Travellers are more clued-in and do their own bookings and the people who use travel agents arenโ€™t the type who would rather use traditional agents in brick and mortar stores. If youโ€™d like to make money in this industry, focus on corporate travel and flashpackers.

I agree on it being a viable option in some capacity. I just canโ€™t envision that travel bloggers who need an extra income stream would be the right people to advise on corporate travel and flash packing. If you wanted to associate the blog/brand name with the service, it might be the wrong angle.

Perfect, thanks.

Iโ€™m not sure thereโ€™s a market for this. A lot of famous travel bloggers have started doing guided tours and selling ebook travel guides. Most readers donโ€™t want to spend a lot of money on custom-fit packages, the most popular blogs stress that travelling is cheaper than living at home.

Travel bloggers often work 40+ hours a week. The extra time needed to be travel agents may negate the amount you could charge for this service.
Just my opinion. I could be completely wrong.

What's the best place to incorporate an online business?

by @octave 7yr 7 years ago  | 63 comments

I have an commerce website. We get around 1000 orders per month and this is going to get quite a bit bigger in next few years.

I am British. I live in Thailand.
Im not allowed to majority own a Thai business and small foreign entrepreneurs are not really welcome. So i need an offshore company.

I need PayPal and an ecommerce internet merchant account. Also looking at alternatives like worldpay. 2checkout etc

Does PayPal need me to be a resident to the country i register my account to? Are there complications being a non resident to get other payment solutions?

Apparently in Hong Kong you need 2 years trading history to get an Internet Mechant Account and they generally turn their noses up at those with less than $1m(us) a year turn over. Singapore seems a bit easier.

I really want to avoid paperwork and book keeping. I hate it.

So i was looking at Seychelles, Panama, BVI, Belize.

Does anyone have experience with payment providers in these countries?

Most nomads i see donโ€™t really have a high volume of small monthly transactions which i do. Im going around in circles and donโ€™t know where to start.

Ill also need a bank account for business and a personal bank account to pay my salary into

Pacific islands with decent internet speed to work online

by @paxai 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Any digital nomads that have lived for an extended period of time on a pacific island? I am planning on moving with my girlfriend for a 6 month period to a pacific island, and planning to live of copywriting and some other online work.

Have been looking at islands like Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands ++. Main problem is that many places seem to have expensive/bad internet speeds and access.

I dontยดt need superfast internet, but it has to be good enough for me to surf, send e-mails, download pictures, update webpages and so on. Either good internet cafes or the possibility to rent appartments with internet that doesnt suck or blow our budget.

Any recommendations for the perfect pacific island for working online?

Internet Speed (Teaching English Online)

by @teacher 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi guys.

Iโ€™ll be travelling to Peru soon to volunteer and thinking to teach online in Cusco. Iโ€™m wondering what the best set-up would be for speeds high enough to teach via video-platform online. Iโ€™m open to getting a SIM Card with a data package, getting a dedicated internet provider for a private apartment or using an ethernet cable to increase speed.

Thank you,
Seda

Anyone interested in giving an interview about your nomad lifestyle?

by @gigigriffis 9yr 9 years ago  | 20 comments

Hey guys,

Iโ€™m doing a series of nomad interviews to demonstrate how different we all do this nomad thing. Iโ€™ve just published one on How Fast Do Nomads Travel? (http://gigigriffis.com/how-fast-do-digital-nomads-travel/) and Iโ€™ve got a few coming up on Do Digital Nomads Have Home Bases?, What Are Digital Nomad Work Schedules Like?, How Do Nomads Choose Where to Go Next? Etc.

Iโ€™m looking for people who would be interested in answering some questions and sharing their personal nomadic perspectives. So if thatโ€™s you, let me know.

Also, itโ€™s really important to me to show some diversity, so Iโ€™m particularly interested in interviewing POC and nomads who are from unusual backgrounds (for example: 40+ nomads, retired nomads, nomads with kids, LGBT nomads, etc.).

What's the best location to incorporate an online business?

by @dmftaras 9yr 9 years ago  | 14 comments

Hey nomads,

Iโ€™m looking for the best location to incorporate my online business (offshore programming and so on).

The main requirements:

  • Low cost incorporation/yearly fee
  • Preferred with no audits (or other kind of paperwork)
  • With no local office/secretary/director needed
  • With low or 0% taxes
  • Easy to get paid from US/EU
  • Easy to send payments worldwide ( I can use Transferwise/Stripe or something like that, i donโ€™t care )
  • With corporate credit/debit cards

Iโ€™m only one owner of the company (not EU/US resident).
Iโ€™ve checked jurisdictions like BVI/Belize/Nevis and iโ€™m interested in it. It would be appreciated if you could give me some kind of advice, if you have experience with one of these jurisdictions.

My budget for incorporation < $1500

Thanks!

Anybody knows of good online banks for Europeans?

by @kfk 9yr 9 years ago  | 6 comments

Ok, I was just writing a PM here on banks and the question popped in my head. I am not a digital nomad, but I am very close to that way of living, in the sense that I donโ€™t want to commit to any specific physical location, long term investment (maybe only private pension), long term in general actually.

Now, I use Deutsche Bank. Nothing against them, but:

  • I hate to have an account manager that calls me telling me I should invest my money
  • The online banking is good but not great
  • Services are ok, but I donโ€™t use most of them and the one I would like (online everything please) are not there

So, I was wondering if any of you is happy with any of the digital banks out there? Criteria for a good online bank:

  • minimal paperwork
  • no account manager
  • 90% async communication (I call them, they call me only if the house is on fire)
  • they donโ€™t request a physical address and they DO NOT SEND PAPER STUFF to my mailbox

Anything like this?

Non-Personal alternative to maintaing a corporation for online business?

by @blueblueocean 10yr 10 years ago  | 2 comments

So Iโ€™m finding if you have a small online business, maintaining a corporation in a country that has many rules is just a headache. Lots of forms to file and even if you use an accountant you have to bring them up to speed, give them documents and receipts, itโ€™s almost the same amount of workโ€ฆOn the other hand, you save some money and donโ€™t usually make pension contributions.

Has anyone found a solution thatโ€™s easier? Like giving the business to a friend or family member and they can wire you funds as an employee perhaps?

Where to do online shopping in Thailand?

in Thailand by @adrienbetweets 10yr 10 years ago  | 6 comments

Whatโ€™s up dreamers?

Do you have any recommendation on where to do online shopping in Thailand?

I just got an external screen & accessories from Lazada.co.th: the price was good & delivery of the screen (to Koh Lanta) took only 3 daysโ€ฆ! This was way beyond my expectations.

Any other tips (& shared experience) would be appreciated.

ps. created the same conversation on the DN Thailand facebook group if you prefer participating over there https://www.facebook.com/groups/1069582656437496/permalink/1075943859134709/

What I really want to know is what online businesses people actually have! As a noob nomad, enlighten me as to what you all actually do at your laptops while you travel! And why does this specific business fit into your lifestyle?

Can becoming a digital nomad help fight your anxiety and depression?

by @noam_lightstone 10yr 10 years ago  | 13 comments

Hey guys, I officially became a nomad in February, moving to HCMC in Vietnam. Now Iโ€™m living in Chiang Mai.

I used to suffer from really bad anxiety and depression, and have a blog that helps people who deal with them.

I wondered: could becoming a digital nomad help with these mental issues?

For the pro-side, you get to travel, meet so many people, see more things than many could hope to see in their entire lifeโ€ฆ

On the against-side, you have stress of sometimes not having money if youโ€™re just starting out, loneliness/isolation, problem with integrating into a new culture, etc.

Wanted to get you guysโ€™ opinions and thoughts. Do you think this lifestyle can help or hurt? Why or why not?

Any Apple users interested in beta testing my VPN service?

by @portable 10yr 10 years ago  | 19 comments

Hi,

Iโ€™m a digital nomad (coming up to 3 years / 30 countries), software developer and run a VPN network.

Over the past few months Iโ€™ve scaled up the VPN network to include a lot of new countries (and popular nomad destinations) including Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Chile and a load of others.

Several locations have been configured to route across Tier 1 networks to Europe and the US so should help improve international bandwidth. (often the problem with Internet access in some countries is that you have a great connection to local services within that country but poor international connectivity. By connecting to a decent VPN server located in that country and then routing across premium bandwidth you can often get significantly better results).

Iโ€™m wondering if any techy Mac/iPhone/iPad users in some of these locations would be interested in testing and providing feedback on the services. Iโ€™ll give you a free subscription and can work with you to give you the best connection. Youโ€™ll have a network of 50 servers in 30 countries to connect to, and with your feedback hopefully I can tweak the network to give the best performance for other nomads.

Iโ€™m not sure if I can post a link to the apps (donโ€™t want my first post to be seen as spam) so reply to this thread if youโ€™re interested.

Start an online business in Australia or Asia?

in Australia by @liztai 10yr 10 years ago  | 23 comments

This is something Iโ€™m really torn about. I really love the lifestyle in Australia, but the high living costs means that I have to work hard at my day job to pay the bills while I get things off the ground. I wonโ€™t be able to save much either.

In Malaysia, Iโ€™ll have a stable day job, free accommodation and lower costs of living, but am unsure if itโ€™ll be more difficult to get my online biz off the ground because Iโ€™m not sure about the business contacts I can get in Malaysia.

What do you think? Start a biz in Australia or Asia?
