Formentera, Spain vs. Santorini, Greece?

in Santorini , Greece by @que 9yr  | 5 comments

Hi,
Iโ€™m ready to start traveling again (looking at May through August, about). I have a little more money to spend and would like an island experience in Southern Europe. Iโ€™m a little older and looking for a little more comfort these days. I would plan to rent a 1 bedroom apartment if possible. Places that come to mind are Formentera or Santorini. Iโ€™d like to stay for 2 or 3 months. Does anyone have any experiences to share with these two locales. One concern I have about Greece is safety given the economic crisis. Any insight into there would be appreciated.

Thanks

I live close to Formentera, in Javea where I run a coliving space called Sun and Co (www.sun-and-co.com).

As far as I know, Formentera is quite naturally reserved, so not a lot options to live, what means itโ€™ll be more expensive than any other island.

Itโ€™s beautiful, though.

Maybe you can find more info here: http://www.formenteraliving.com/en/home/

Good luck!

Both islans are incredibly beautiful but quite different. While in Formentera you can find clear blue/turquoise water and white sand beaches making you think that you are on a Caribbean island, it doesnโ€™t have much else to offer in terms of restaurants, bars and places to hang out. Itโ€™s a rather quiet island. We never had any safety issues there, tourists and locals are quite laidback.
As for Santorini, I found it more varied in terms of beaches, villages, restaurants, people and places to visit or do. The landscape can change dramatically, it has more culture and you are more likely to meet interesting people. Just because it is bigger and becaise there are more people living there you are more exposed than Formentera, otherwise itโ€™s a pretty safe island.

Donโ€™t be afraid of your safety in Greece, just stick to the basic cautious behavior. Iโ€™m in Greece for 2 months already and I havenโ€™t got any problem. In fact people here are really friendly.

Hello. I am fifty years old and have been in Greece for 8 weeks (Athens, Crete, Halkida). The people are great and I have no concerns about safety because of the economy. Although I did get my phone stolen out of my hand while walking late at night in Athens. But perhaps I was flashing it around too much.

I havenโ€™t made it to Santorini, but can imagine it is quite nice. It is one of the more popular islands and with tourism I would think safety there is no problem.

Good luck

UK Expats travelling to Greece?

in Bulgaria by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi all, my husband and I have been living in Bulgaria for the past month and were hoping to travel to Greece next. Have any UK nationals entered Greece lately? I believe that anyone entering Greece requires a negative COVID test 72 hours before travel - is this what they are requiring at the borders please? (Reason we ask is for Bulgaria we filled out forms but weren't asked for them) Thanks.

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 5yr 5 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

April in Spain. Where to go besides Canary Islands

in Spain by @rynesweeney 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

So I head to Barcelona in a week for the next 4. I am reading some stuff online. I want to wing it and ask around when I get to Barce. But what I see online I may just spend the open three weeks I have in the Canary islands. The year round surfing and reasonable cost of living sounds great especially spending the first three months of 2018 on the beaches in Central America.

I fly out of Madrid the second week of May. I dont want to spend more than a couple days in Madrid. I had a week there last year. So if anybody could shed some insight based on their experiences that would be most bodacious.

For those who are still reading here are some interests of mine:

  • Hiking and outdoors activities in general.
  • Surfing/beaches
  • Food (this should be higher on this list actually).
  • Smaller and lesser known cities are ideal.

Thanks for any and all the help peoples.

See you in the forum, Ryne

Tips for nomads in Granada, Spain?

in Granada , Spain by @katieuniacke 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone. Iโ€™ve just moved to Granada in Andalucia to live with some friends I met in Mexico. Planning on staying a few months and then seeing where the wind takes me, but in the meantime, I wanted to know if there are any fellow nomads around, or if anyone has any tips for coworking spaces/cafes? Thanks in advance!

Dubrovnik vs. Mostar: Which Would You Pick for a Two-Month Stay?

in Mostar , Bosnia by @gigigriffis 7yr 7 years ago  | 18 comments

Hey guys!

Doing some travel planning for when my boyfriend and I have to be out of the Schengen in the spring. Iโ€™m looking at Dubrovnik and Mostar. Weโ€™ll probably get to both of them, but was wondering - for those who have been - which one would you recommend basing in longer-term?

Some context on us: we love food and the outdoors. Both of us are cyclists (and should have folding bikes with us by then) and enjoy hiking/walking. Great views are a must. And neither of us are bar or party people, so the night scene isnโ€™t a factor for us. Quiet places are great and I love small towns.

Keep in mind that this will be March/April/maybe May next year, so not high tourist season. I donโ€™t mind if things are generally bustling, but I hate super crowded touristy spots (for example: I love Rome in winter and hate it in summer).

If anyone has insight, would love to hear it!

Bali vs. Chiang Mai for digital nomads?

in Chiang Mai , Thailand by @snu6ew 8yr 8 years ago  | 16 comments

My girlfriend and I started our DN life this March and went straight to Chiang Mai because of itโ€™s ease of living. We love it. CM is great โ€“ we got a scooter for 2700 THB, a nice apartment for 8000 THB all in, we get our laundry done for 50 THB, eat out at nice places every day for less than 100 THB etc. Arriving here needed nearly no preparation โ€“ it just worked out all by itself.

We are still on tight budget and donโ€™t want to give up much of CMโ€™s quality of life but we want to see other places and we are now thinking about what could be our next destination. We are not really willing and able to spend more than what we spend now. Bali seems to be a good place according to what you all wrote.

How does it compare to Chiang Mai or Thailand in general?
CM can get very hot and we often acknowledge that we should have chosen an apartment with a pool here. Can I rent something in Bali for a few months with a pool for less than 250 USD?

Are there any Nomad-houses or similar projects at the moment that make it easy to connect to other people?

We donโ€™t really hang out in co-working spaces, more in cafรฉs. We source products in China and sell them to customers in Europe through e-commerce.

Any tips or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Suggestions for somewhere to spend Jully in northern Spain?

in Spain by @jb510 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™m looking for somewhere to spend July in northern Spain. (Not that it matters but June weโ€™re in Paris, August in Porto).

Iโ€™ve spent time in small Italian villages and loved the experience. Iโ€™m hoping to find something like that but in coastal Spain, I just donโ€™t know the area at all yet. Suggestions?

Somewhere roughly in or between Galicia and Bilbao. Somewhere walkable to a half dozen small resturants/cafes/etcโ€ฆ

Can you get an NIE number while working in Spain for a UK company?

in Spain by @sabolmm 8yr 8 years ago  | 1 comment

Has anyone stayed in Barcelona longer than 3 months as a nomad?

I realise UK citizens have to apply for a NIE number if they are staying longer than 3 months in Spain. But can you actually get an NIE number while working in Spain for a UK company?

My company is registered in the UK so I will be remote working from Spain, donโ€™t want to setup as a freelancer or sold trader in Spain as it will only be a temporary pit stop for 3-6 months.

Has anyone tried to apply for a non-lucrative residence visa in Spain?

in Spain by @i_am_aileen 8yr 8 years ago  | 29 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m planning on moving to Spain and Iโ€™d like to connect with those who have tried to apply for this special type of long-term visa called as โ€œnon-lucrative residence visaโ€.

Going from what Iโ€™ve researched so far, itโ€™s a good option for us nomads (more so: business owners) to stay longer in Spain (one only needs to prove steady stream of income of at least EUR 2.2K per month and that you should NOT work for Spain โ€” so letโ€™s say having a U.S. company and staying in Spain is fine).

So : my concerns right now revolve mainly on anyoneโ€™s experiences with applying for this type of visa. How difficult was it? How long did it take you?

Also, Iโ€™m wondering about how I can secure a rental space for a year if my lease depends on the approval from the embassy. Iโ€™m also wondering if Valencia is a good place to stay in?

Would you like to help revitalize a village in Greece?

in Greece by @lightmotif 9yr 9 years ago  | 48 comments

Hi all -

Iโ€™ve recently connected with an interesting community group called the Meraki people, based in a village in the Peloponnese of Greece, only 2 hours from Athens and its airport, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kalamata and its airportโ€ฆfull of cultural gems, great beaches and wild mountainous landscapes. They are trying to bring new life and economy to their villages, in a self-sustaining, technologically-innovative, and environmentally-positive way. And theyโ€™re interested in hosting digital nomads in a community experience where you could work on your own projects and/or volunteer to help the local communities, depending on your interests and availability. They have received some significant international recognition already.

Iโ€™m trying to work out details around a potential gathering approx mid-Nov to mid-Dec. but also want to gauge interest before getting too far. Cost of lodging should be reasonable/ off-season โ€“ apts or private rooms with heat and hot water, and there would be a co-working space + potential community kitchen. @alldreamedup and @munly_leong expressed interested in Greece this fall - have either of you made plans? Also, @srajan821 and @bradonomics - the Meraki people are trying to do something similar to an eco-village, so wanted to give you a shout too.

Hope to hear from some nomads interested this fall (or in the future). Thanks!

Susan

How to avoid Tax Residency/Wealth Tax in Spain?

in Spain by @palimpalim 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m planning to move to Spain this year, but Spain has a wealth tax for worldwide assets over 700.000โ‚ฌ if you are classified as a resident which I want to avoid.

Iโ€™ll try to be a short as possible:

  • I am a german citizen and Iโ€™m renting a flat in London, UK but havenโ€™t stayed there a single day in 2016. (110 days in different countries in Asia, 10 days in Spain, 30 days in germany)
  • I own a flat in germany that I rent out to tenants (limited tax liability for the rental income in germany), but besides that I donโ€™t have any income except for a few dividends from my stocks
  • I am planning to fly to Thailand for 2 months beginning of December 2016

Although I am renting the UK flat until December 2016 I prefer not to be in UK, which would mean that I would not be classified as a UK-resident because I would not meet any of the automatic UK or sufficient tie tests.

Iโ€™d like to move to Spain as soon as possible but would be willing to stay out of it for x weeks to avoid being classified as a resident and save wealth tax.

Can anyone help me in this matter? whats my best line?

How would you define "visiting" vs. "living" in a country?

by @krompson 9yr 9 years ago  | 11 comments

CouchSurfing.com profiles have a section where users list countries theyโ€™ve visited and countries theyโ€™ve lived inโ€“an interesting distinction for a nomad to think about.

Certainly thereโ€™s no one right way to define โ€œvisitingโ€ and โ€œliving,โ€ but how would you define each of these?

How is Malaga in Spain for digital nomads?

Has anyone been to Malaga before and if so, anything to recommend? Iโ€™m thinking of staying put there for December + January and then probably move on to Las Palmaโ€™s or Barcelona for a month. Maybe go to Asia again but weโ€™ll see what happens.

Iโ€™m looking for a nice place to stay, moderately cheap. Heard a place is quite easy to find for around 300-400 euroโ€™s, but can anyone confirm this?
