Podgorica is a quiet and safe city that works well as a base for travelers looking to explore Montenegro. It's centrally located with good road connections to both the coast and the north, making it convenient for day trips. The city is generally affordable, less crowded than coastal areas, and has decent internet, making it a practical choice for longer stays and remote work. Restaurants, bars, and cafes cater mostly to locals and provide a relaxed social atmosphere, especially in the evenings during summer.
However, Podgorica itself doesn't have much to offer in terms of tourist attractions. Many visitors describe it as unremarkable or even unattractive, especially when compared to other Montenegrin destinations like Kotor. Some parts of the city seem neglected, including abandoned structures right in the city center. It lacks the historical charm and scenery that draws tourists to other Balkan cities. Overall, it’s better suited for living or working than sightseeing.
AI-generated summary of reviews
Small city, very safe and chill. Internet in general was good, more affordable much less crowded than Kotor and all the beach cities in Montenegro.
Bars and restaurants during summer nights were full, mostly with locals, nice atmosphere.
There is nothing much to see in the city, besides the river and some parks, but it's good to work and focus.

It's a small city and a great place to work and go about your day.
Not very touristy and there are much better places in Montenegro to visit as a tourist but Podgorica is great as a base to explore both the north and south of the country as it's very well connected with roads in each direction.
It's very affordable compared to the coast and there are a lot of restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Google "ugliest Balkan capital city reddit" and you see what is the most popular answer. I've been to all the Balkans, and Podgorica is probably the most "meh" and uninteresting city I remember visiting. Abandoned building without windows right on the main square of the capital of the country, are you kidding me? Really boring and although there are some things to see, but overall it's extremely generic, and you'd be better off going to other cities of Montenegro instead of Podgorica. Kotor for example is much more interesting, as well as some other cities on coast, or nature on the north.
