San Cristobal has a mixed reputation among visitors and nomads. On the positive side, it's considered one of the most affordable cities in Mexico, especially compared to major hubs like CDMX or Oaxaca. The region offers plenty of things to do—hiking, visiting lakes and waterfalls, and exploring surrounding indigenous communities and rebel-controlled territories. The city also has a lively cultural scene with many cafes, bars, and nightly live music. The population is diverse, with locals, nomads, and indigenous groups contributing to a unique social mix. The climate is generally agreeable, with warm days and cool evenings.
However, there are consistent downsides. Reliable internet is hard to find outside of coworking spaces, making remote work more challenging. Food safety is a repeated concern, with several reports of food poisoning from local food or water. Though small, the town struggles with traffic congestion. Most notably, several reports mention increasing safety issues, with some describing the place as potentially dangerous due to rising crime. While many nomads stay insulated from these issues, it's something to consider before planning a longer stay. Overall, San Cristobal may be suitable for short visits or adventurous travelers but comes with notable trade-offs.

San Cris is actually dangerous and getting more dangerous, so know that if you go there. Of course, nomads in their bubbles will rarely see it but do a simple google search of news related, there's been a huge uptick in violence over the past few years. I experienced it while living there. Personally really wouldn't recommend to people unless you like the idea of being in a city that is going to eventually become a warzone

San Cris is one of the undiscovered gems of Mexico - it's growing fast, with lots of great places to stay (see Casa Satoshi on Instagram). There are loads of coworking spaces now, the climate is awesome (warm days and cool evenings), there are a tonne of great restaurants, cafes, bars. There's multiple options for live music and events every night, and the population is a wonderful mix of nomads, locals and indigenous population. The local region has lots to do - hikes, lakes, waterfalls, even the opportunity to visit rebel-held territory, currently under EZLN control. I can't recommend it enough.
Oh, and by the way, the cost of living on here is totally off. It's WAY cheaper than places like CDMX/Guadalajara/Oaxaca. In fact, it's the cheapest *great* city in Mexico. A must visit :)

San Cristobal is more suitable for vacation and backpackers. It is complicated to find a good wifi and mobile internet connection, but there are some coworkings. Didn’t like the town itself - too much traffic for such a small place, not to mention that a lot of tourists got food poisoned from food/water, but it’s worth visiting because of marvellous nature of Chiapas
