Alexandria offers a more livable alternative to Cairo, particularly praised for its better air quality and milder weather, especially in summer months. Compared to other large cities in Egypt, it’s considered less hectic and more relaxed, though still a bustling urban environment. Daily life is convenient with most goods and meals deliverable 24/7, which makes local living practical and accessible. Affordability is a major strength, with costs of living lower than many other cities. Local people are generally friendly and welcoming, contributing positively to the overall atmosphere.
However, cleanliness is a consistent issue, with the city described as dirty and having a rougher urban feel, which might not suit everyone. Despite this, the grittier atmosphere seems to coincide with a warm and unique social environment. Don’t expect a polished tourist destination—while it has a distinct charm, there are few tourists, and Western visitors are not very common. Alexandria is different from typical Western or even other Mediterranean cities, with its own rhythm and culture. It's a functional, affordable, and culturally interesting place, best suited to travelers or residents looking for an authentic, if gritty, living experience. Alexandria may not appeal to everyone, but it leaves a strong impression.

Very convenient, dirty, good weather and affordable. Overall it's a harsh city environment, which paradoxically typically shapes friendly people. I saw only a handful of westerners / tourists in my month (June) in Alexandria. You order everything. Food ie meals, groceries, clothes everything seems available 24 hours. People are nice. It's unique and different world. I thought it would be similar to Turkey. It's very different to any place I have been to.
Note I would choose Alexandria over Cairo just for the weather (I was here in June).

I lived in Alexandria from 2001 to 2003. The air pollution doesn't stagnate because it's blown inland, unlike Cairo, and the quality of life is better. I have happy memories. I went back for a visit in 2008 and it hadn't really changed, but since then Egypt has endured tumultuous times.
