Does anybody have a home base?

by @ld 9yr  | 19 comments

My boyfriend and I, from California, are starting our travels first around the USA. Weโ€™ve only stayed in a few locations, California and Colorado with Airbnb, and basically an entire semi-decent place to ourselves is $2k a month. And with payment securing our next monthโ€™s place - rent comes to $4k a month. Obviously not sustainable, and not to mention a place missing most functional items to live comfortably is not ideal.

Unfortunately, this has turned my boyfriend off to traveling in general. He proposed we get a โ€œhome baseโ€, live cheap and travel out from there.

Do any of you do something similar? Have a home that you stay in for a certain amount of time, and do trips out from there? My worry is that normal life will settle in and no traveling will happen. But we are thinking if we can be on the winning side of Airbnb (the renters) then we can rent our place while we travel, and come back as needed.

I appreciate your thoughts and input!

Hola! My home base is currently Barcelona. I usually take a winter break and go travelling in Asia. Up for a house swap or to rent it out to nomads

Over the last two years, my homebase has been in Charleston, SC, and Iโ€™ve also lived for a month at a time in Dublin, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Italy, coming back to my homebase in between for some periods. I wrote about in detail here (http://www.gohomebase.com/blog/2015/9/2/how-to-grow-your-business-while-traveling-the-world), but basically, the deal is you just have to offset your rental costs. I did it by giving my place up at first, but that was exhausting and unsettling, so then I did it by keeping my place and renting it out while I was gone, but I got lucky because it can be hard to find reliable longer-term renters like that. Iโ€™m building a startup (actually called โ€œHomebaseโ€) to try and solve this exact problemโ€ฆbecause Iโ€™m too old to backpack around like a legit nomad, and Iโ€™d rather feel like a baller with multiple homes living the dreamโ€ฆand clearly Iโ€™m not the only one. Letโ€™s connect and hopefully I can solve our collective challenge!

I personally feel more secure with having a home base, because with the passport I have, I do not have access to a lot of countries. Also, from where I was born, iโ€™m actually leaving a very cheap place to live in to go to my dream countries (Europe). Even Mexico or Costa Rica and Thailand are more expensive for me than where I am. So I guess itโ€™s relative. I am in Cape Town where Iโ€™d like to establish my home base. Itโ€™s very cheap, my rent comes to less than $300 per month in a very upmarket and safe area about 5 minutes walk from the ocean. If youโ€™re based in USA, you can always rent out your place and have some form of passive income too. This might help put your boyfriend at ease, at least for the first few months before he makes the total change to become a full-time nomad. For some it does take more time and thatโ€™s OK too, we have to respect their pace. :smile:All the best!

Iโ€™ve been using Calcutta as a base for four years. Trips range from a week of working up in the hills in Darjeeling to three months of motorcycle camping north - south through India and building websites from my tent. Back in Chicago this month, then off againโ€ฆnot sure where Iโ€™m headed next. Might wrap up a few things in Calcutta, then do Thailand next year.

I like having a home base because it lets me set up a desktop w/ dual monitors for code  And once you have a home base up and running, working nocturnal hours to match US time zones isnโ€™t that hard at allโ€ฆI worked better at night in the US anyway, so in some ways it actually becomes more convenient.

Iโ€™ve been nomadic in the US as well. Motorcycle camping down the Pacific coast highway and working out of a tent was wonderful. You could probably find an el cheapo apartment year a place like Yosemite, Yellowstone, or Crater Lake for peanuts and spend a couple of months at a time there, or if youโ€™re more into people / culture, maybe NOLAโ€™s your thing? I prefer being outside the US myself, but there are definitely US options that you could use to try and ease your boyfriend into the lifestyle without freaking him out too much.

Most of Latin America is in the same time zones as the US and is quite a bit cheaper. One destination very popular with retirees and reportedly both cheap & pleasant:

Perhaps easier since it is closer to home & English is spoken:

My home base is in Charleroi, Belgium: Iโ€™m not a full-time nomad, but I travel several times a year and work from a rural location using solar power, usb internet, and when all else fails, a hotel lounge in town (which is an hourโ€™s walk from the spot in the country).

I own 2 houses in Costa Rica and in the process of buying 1 additional for โ€œautomatedโ€ (property management company handles them) rentals, I think everyone should consider having a fix address in a place he likes (or home country) to always be able to go back to and I think every nomad in a good financial position today should look into investing in healty rental properties that can be automated (while we travel) so if dark times arise online you are always safe and can continue travel and exploring different projects.

I agree, a home base is certainly nice to have. My wife has a non-profit that she started in Nigeria, we were able to get an apartment there for $2,500/yr so we maintain that as we travel to different places. Honestly though, I donโ€™t think I would miss it too much if we didnโ€™t have it. There are many countries where you can get an apartment for a similar cost (places in EU, maybe even central US). It really helped us to have a virtual mailbox, so if you leave your place in the US, make sure to get that!

We have absolutely LOVED this approach. We establish a comfy home base somewhere interesting, then rent it out on Airbnb and go on mini-holidays in the area.

For example, we lived for 7 months in Ao Nang, Thailand, and rented it out 1-2 weeks of each month so that rent worked out to about zero, and we used that time to explore Phuket, Krabi Town, and cool nearby locations. We did the same in Hoi An Vietnam. Canโ€™t wait to do it again!

We wrote about it here:

The time difference in South America is also negligible. Because it is a few hours ahead of the US West coast it can work out nicely as it gives you a few hours in the morning to work uninterrupted before the clients come online.

There are also lots of cheap countries that are easy to live in which are in the same time zone. Give Mexico a shot for a while. You can get the same standard of living for a fraction of the price with no timezone issues and easy entrance back to the USA if necessary. Sounds like your bf doesnโ€™t really want to do this and is just humoring you until you change your mind.

Have you tried negotiating a price off? Instead of booking an Airbnb, try contacting the host and ask 50% off. That works in low-season.

Also, the US is big, so try to find places that are cheap and live there.

Hi, Iโ€™m writing this from my base in Central Bulgaria. In some EU countries, especially Latvia, Bulgaria and Romania the apartment costs are driven down greatly by migration to the rest of EU, so 250-300$ / m2 is quite common.

Traveling will definitely happen because Bulgaria will kick me out after 90 days.

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Anybody recommend US health insurance with global coverage?

by @tylertringas 6yr 6 years ago  | 18 comments

Any US nomads found health insurance with global coverage? My current approach has been to have US health insurance, essentially a waste of money but if I ever got very sick I could go home and have coverage. My actual healthcare is a combination of travel insurance (havenโ€™t really used it much though) and paying cash in cheap places like SE Asia and Latin America. The cobbled together approach is neither simple nor very cost-effective. Love to find a product with global coverage that also satisfies Obamacare requirements. Any leads?

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Is anybody a Digital Nomad in the UK and not a resident?

by @creative_nomad_ 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

The situation is that my BF is a UK citizen and I am not. We are traveling around SEA and planning to stop in the UK for 6 months to rekindle funds. Granted, the UK is not the cheapest place to rekindle funds, however, he can work and get a good job there.

I have already done my working visa in the UK so I canโ€™t legally work there again. Iโ€™m a graphic designer and web designer and have decided that I will try and get freelance work to support myself whilst Iโ€™m over there.

My question is more related to tax and visas. I am an Australia citizen so I can get a 3 month tourist visa. Iโ€™m just a little worried about how strict they are over there on visas and questioning finance etc

Do you have trouble deciding where to establish a home base?

by @jasonmwomack 7yr 7 years ago  | 16 comments

With so many places to choose from, I sometimes overthink where I should establish a presence(home base) . This thought pattern sometimes eliminates the spontaneous choices that are right in front of me  I am wondering if any other DNs deal with this as well. If you have any suggestions or resources that could be helpful, please do not hesitate to share!

Has anybody encountered a travel gear mfr that intentionally makes crappy-looking gear?

by @octavient 8yr 8 years ago  | 8 comments

Has anybody ever encountered a travel gear manufacturer that makes gear that is solid and durable, but that is intentionally designed to look old and crappy? For international travel, I want good, durable gear, but Iโ€™m uncomfortable walking around with slick, brand-new-looking, expensive-looking gear (especially with my family in tow). Iโ€™m happy to snatch up any good used gear (reduce, reuse, recycle) that weโ€™re lucky enough to encounter, but selection is limited, and durability is often compromised. Seems like thereโ€™d be a decent market for some durable but ragged-looking travel gear. What i have in mind is luggage, backpacks, laptop cases, smartphone cases, camera bags, infant/toddler carriers, etc. Iโ€™m sensitive to the preppy fad of clueless, well-off westerners dressing up like the poor in naive but trendy mockery, but thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m after, here. I just want good gear that doesnโ€™t put a target on my back as we traipse around various parts of the world. Anybody have any thoughts on thisโ€ฆ?

Anybody around Europe over the next few months?

by @paulrose 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

Hi All

Soโ€ฆ a few months ago when I was in Asia, for some reason I decided that it was gonna be too hot over the summer months and I wanted to mix it up with a few months touring Europe. So I had the idea to buy and RV and drive round for a few months.

Meet Teagan

Itโ€™s taken a few months going through the process of getting my license to drive the RV, because itโ€™s so large it wasnโ€™t covered on my standard driving license. Add to that, I had some solar panels fitted for unlimited power, and a massive satellite dish for internet wherever I go.

Iโ€™ve now got my ferry booked out of the UK for September 11th and at the moment have no plans past the first few weeks.

Has anyone on here done anything similar before? Any places recommended, or anyone around Europe over the next few months?

Iโ€™m doing about 3 months worth before heading to Vegas for NYE and around the states for a few months after that before back to Asia for a bit.

Has anybody with a Hong Kong company been through an Offshore Profits claim?

in Hong Kong by @prof 8yr 8 years ago  | 23 comments

Iโ€™ve just hit the 18-month mark of business in Hong Kong ready to submit by first Profit Tax Return. I also have the option of filing an Offshore Profits claim.

The Offshore Profits claim itself seems to be a convoluted, long drawn-out process with significant costs to bare in working with a certified CPA to answer Inland Revenue Department questioning.

Iโ€™d love it if somebody who has been through this already were able to answer the following questions:

  • How long did it take for the claim to be accepted or denied?
  • What was the end result?
  • How much did the IRD dig into each transaction?
  • How much did you pay your agent to deal with the offshore claim?

Any insights are much appreciated! :slightly_smiling:

Is Singapore a good nomad and business base?

in Singapore by @msurocks99 8yr 8 years ago  | 11 comments

I am thinking to change my base to Singapore .

I have some queries regarding it,

Hacks of Price of Living : I donโ€™t want to live in hostels where 4/8 persons live in a room, want to live in a room may be in a shared apartment, gym and other facilities would be nice, I am getting in 800 to 1000 SGDโ€™s pretty good Condo rooms, can I turn it down to 500-600 ?

Food : I stayed there for a month recently, so pretty much know the food hacks now, if I am eating at home its cheap and hawkers places are also cheaper.

Howโ€™s it for business Base ?

I run a Software Development Company mostly into building MVPโ€™s for Startups and running extension teams for SMEโ€™s. So I think it will be pretty good for me based in Singapore for finding new opportunities and Client Communications.

What do you think about it and any suggestions would be great.

Anybody knows of good online banks for Europeans?

by @kfk 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Ok, I was just writing a PM here on banks and the question popped in my head. I am not a digital nomad, but I am very close to that way of living, in the sense that I donโ€™t want to commit to any specific physical location, long term investment (maybe only private pension), long term in general actually.

Now, I use Deutsche Bank. Nothing against them, but:

  • I hate to have an account manager that calls me telling me I should invest my money
  • The online banking is good but not great
  • Services are ok, but I donโ€™t use most of them and the one I would like (online everything please) are not there

So, I was wondering if any of you is happy with any of the digital banks out there? Criteria for a good online bank:

  • minimal paperwork
  • no account manager
  • 90% async communication (I call them, they call me only if the house is on fire)
  • they donโ€™t request a physical address and they DO NOT SEND PAPER STUFF to my mailbox

Anything like this?

Does anybody have experience with setting up an offshore company and bank account in Labuan (Malaysia)

in Malaysia by @nomads_and_drifters 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi there,
We are a husband and wife who travel a lot and have a small company set up in Fiji. We offer services to clients all over the world, but the Fijian banking system isnโ€™t very accommodating for a digital based business with a lot of overseas expenses.

To make our life easier we are planning to set up an offshore company and bank account in Labuan.
We have a Fijian, Belgium and Uk passport but have residency in Fiji.

Does anybody have experience with a situation like this? and any advice how to go about setting up an offshore company and bank account ideally in Labuan (or Singapore)?

Anybody living (or that used to live) in Aruba?

in Aruba by @erikahlehmann 9yr 9 years ago  | 8 comments

Hi there!

Iโ€™m doing my research on nice places in SA/CA. Iโ€™ve been living in Argentina for the past 4 years and Iโ€™ve only been at the beach for 2 weeks (in Rio) almost 2 years ago. I know, itโ€™s sad

I want my next home to be close to the beach, and Iโ€™ve been hearing great things about Aruba. Iโ€™m not planning on staying another 4 years at the new location, but at least a few months.

Has anyone lived and worked from there? Do they have fast and reliable internet? Is it affordable?

If not Aruba, which other places would you recommend to spend a few months close to the beach that are affordable and with high speed Wi-Fi?

Iโ€™m thinking about staying in SA/CA because of the time zones. I work for an American company, so I think Iโ€™d rather stay in a time zone thatโ€™s not to far away from theirs.

Some other places that have crossed my mind are Guatemala City or Antigua, Quito, Costa Rica (although Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s expensive)โ€ฆ

I still have a few months to think about it while I finish some paperwork in Buenos Aires, but Iโ€™d like to leave around August/September.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Does anybody else change hotels everyday?

by @waylandchin 9yr 9 years ago  | 44 comments

I work at night so I have free time during the day. Every day, I would change hotels. This lets me experience a different part of town every day. At around 1pm, I would check out, then load up the hotels.com app and find the next 3-Star hotel under $40. Then Iโ€™d grab an Uber and make my way to the new hotel. And then repeat the next day until Iโ€™ve lived in every 3-Star hotel within my budget in the city. Does anybody else do this?

Has anybody tried the Surface Pro?

by @creative_nomad_ 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi All,

I am a freelance graphic designer. My biggest hassle with traveling is carrying around my Mac. I always carry a tablet (for reading) and a computer for work. The Surface Pro combines these and has the power to run my Adobe design programs. The extra space it would enable would be great.

There are a few things that worry me. The small screen, getting use to Windows and not Mac, the large price tag and just knowing if it will really be powerful enough to run my Adobe programs.

Has anyone had experience using the Surface pro? Could you recommend anything that might be better.

Any advice would be appreciated
