Strasbourg is a relaxed, walkable city that offers a pleasant lifestyle with short distances between most locations. The city center is especially convenient to live in due to its compact size, and it’s surrounded by a scenic river. Public transport, including trams and buses, is efficient and easy to use. The city also serves as a great base for exploring nearby countries like Germany and Switzerland. The mixture of Alsatian, German, and French culture, along with a diverse student population, creates a cosmopolitan atmosphere that feels vibrant and welcoming.
In terms of safety, Strasbourg is generally secure and has a positive atmosphere. Grocery prices are standard for France and comparable to neighboring Germany. For digital nomads, working from cafés can present some challenges. While there are a few quality coffee shops available such as Coffee Stub, options are limited in terms of space and amenities like Wi-Fi. Large chain cafés like Starbucks may be more suitable for those needing consistent Wi-Fi.
Housing via Airbnb can be expensive, though longer stays may allow for rental negotiation. Overall, Strasbourg is a strong option for longer stays or those seeking a balanced lifestyle with cultural depth, good transport, and convenient access to nearby destinations.

I loved this city! We stayed for one week, but could easily stay longer. What I love about this city is its beauty, walk ability and convenience to other places such as Germany, Switzerland and other parts of France, just to name a few. It’s a big, little city. It has an airport as well, for when you want to go further. The cost for groceries were not any different than other parts of France or Germany. There are many students here and a rich culture of Alsatian, German and French cultures interwoven. The orange park is a fantastic place to walk, relax and picnic. Getting around on the tram and bus is very easy. City center is highly touristy, so if you don’t want that, I advise staying a little further out of the area.

I stayed 4 months in Strasbourg. The city is very pleasant, the architecture is nice, there are lots of places to stay and chill out on the weekend or before/after work.
I strongly advise to live in the city center surrounded by a very nice river, which is not very big but very convenient because everything is less than 10 minutes away by foot.
The airbnb are not affordable but are in the average of the French cities. I got away with 870 euros for a studio the first month via airbnb and then negotiated to 700 for the next 3 months. The city is safe and there is a good atmosphere.
As far as work is concerned, I rarely go coworking but I like to work in coffee shops. There are not many in the city that are of good quality and have a big space to work. But there are some good spots and quality coffee shops like Coffee Stub : good coffee and nice atmosphere to work with your laptop (but no wifi).
For those who are not necessarily looking for a quality coffee, there are some nice Starbucks to work with your laptop.
Strasbourg is a city where it's good to live, it's a good place to settle down, it's quite cosmopolitan because there are many students. I lived in Japan and I was happy to see that there is a big Japanese community in Strasbourg.
In terms of walking around, we are not far from Germany and there are cities like Colmar which are cool for a relaxing/discovering day trip
I warmly recommend, it's a city that I really enjoyed in France.
