Where to live as a location-independent online entrepreneur with a family?

by @michael_kay 10yr  | 2 comments

Hello, My name is Michael and Iโ€™m an online entrepreneur, I have a wife who works together with me and a 2 year old kid. We have a company registered in the UAE freezone and have lived in Dubai for 2 years, we have decided to move to another country where we can live a better life with the same income. We are looking into Thailand, Maldives, Sri Lanka and other Island nations, as we love living near the sea. We are looking for a nice comfortable villa near the beach with everything needed for a comfortable lifestyle, we need good internet for our work. We are looking for a safe country/city and a peaceful lifestyle. Our monthly budget for everything is around $4000. I guess for this budget we can find a place anywhere, but weโ€™re looking for a best quality of life we can get for this amount of money. It would be great if any of you kind nomads suggest such a place for us. Thanks a lot!

From my subjective experience, Thailand is the best amongst South East Asian countries - it has decent infrastructure, fast internet (probably, except few remote locations), good food, friendly people.

Sri Lanka also nice, but less developed and more crowded.

Maldives probably would be not an option, as it is basically hugh bunch of small islands, with mostly tourist infrasctructure (i.e. high-end resorts), and not much else. And commuting is not so easy there (basically either boats or planes, which is not so cheap).

Another decent and quite developed country is Malaysia, which comes second in my subjective list of top SEA countries.

I not mentioned Singapore or HK, as those are huge cities, which are interesting to visit, but I would not stay there for longer period of times.

What's the best place to incorporate an online business?

by @octave 6yr 6 years ago  | 63 comments

I have an commerce website. We get around 1000 orders per month and this is going to get quite a bit bigger in next few years.

I am British. I live in Thailand.
Im not allowed to majority own a Thai business and small foreign entrepreneurs are not really welcome. So i need an offshore company.

I need PayPal and an ecommerce internet merchant account. Also looking at alternatives like worldpay. 2checkout etc

Does PayPal need me to be a resident to the country i register my account to? Are there complications being a non resident to get other payment solutions?

Apparently in Hong Kong you need 2 years trading history to get an Internet Mechant Account and they generally turn their noses up at those with less than $1m(us) a year turn over. Singapore seems a bit easier.

I really want to avoid paperwork and book keeping. I hate it.

So i was looking at Seychelles, Panama, BVI, Belize.

Does anyone have experience with payment providers in these countries?

Most nomads i see donโ€™t really have a high volume of small monthly transactions which i do. Im going around in circles and donโ€™t know where to start.

Ill also need a bank account for business and a personal bank account to pay my salary into

Pacific islands with decent internet speed to work online

by @paxai 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Any digital nomads that have lived for an extended period of time on a pacific island? I am planning on moving with my girlfriend for a 6 month period to a pacific island, and planning to live of copywriting and some other online work.

Have been looking at islands like Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands ++. Main problem is that many places seem to have expensive/bad internet speeds and access.

I dontยดt need superfast internet, but it has to be good enough for me to surf, send e-mails, download pictures, update webpages and so on. Either good internet cafes or the possibility to rent appartments with internet that doesnt suck or blow our budget.

Any recommendations for the perfect pacific island for working online?

Internet Speed (Teaching English Online)

by @teacher 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi guys.

Iโ€™ll be travelling to Peru soon to volunteer and thinking to teach online in Cusco. Iโ€™m wondering what the best set-up would be for speeds high enough to teach via video-platform online. Iโ€™m open to getting a SIM Card with a data package, getting a dedicated internet provider for a private apartment or using an ethernet cable to increase speed.

Thank you,
Seda

What nomads are out there traveling married and/or with a family?

by @danielgenser 7yr 7 years ago  | 37 comments

Iโ€™m curious to hear from the nomads out there who are traveling as a married couple (or long term committed couple, no matter). Many of the articles, guides, and tips one reads are understandably written from the single travelerโ€™s perspective (even if they are traveling in a group).

What nomads are out there traveling with a marriage mate and/or family?

Anyone working as a social entrepreneur?

by @thomaspichon 8yr 8 years ago  | 18 comments

Hi there,

I see that the large majority of the questions on this forum are coming from business people, and I was wondering if some of you are working on not-for-profit projects, on initiatives that aim at solving social or environmental issues?

Thanks!

Good Eastern European tech and entrepreneurship hubs?

by @gigigriffis 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Hey guys!

For those of you who have spent time in Eastern Europe, Iโ€™d love to know where youโ€™ve found good tech and/or entrepreneurship communities? My partner and I are going to spend a good bit of time in EE next year and would love to know some good spots for both networking and just finding like-minded people. Would love any tips you can offer, especially on non-capital cities or places that arenโ€™t as well known.

Where should we go as a family? Manila, Cebu or Bangkok?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @kaizenpreneur 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi all,

I am looking to get some advice from the collective on where to set up a temporary base for 4-6 weeks in either BKK, Cebu or Manila.

Iโ€™m looking to spend 4-6 weeks somewhere with my wife and 3-month-old boy as a trial run on being a little more nomadic in work / life balance. In the months leading up to the birth of my son, my work situation become a lot more flexible. So, although I am doing all my work from my home-base, I really am not tied to being here for any other reason than it is where I am at present.

I am keen to spend a few years slow travelling with my family while working as a DM. My wife is open / curious about this but needs a little more experience and convincing, hence a trial run somewhere.

Why these cities?

My wife is a Philippino-Australian so we have family and familiarity with Manila and the Philippines (although neither of us have been to Cebu).

BKK I have been too several times in the last couple of years - we both like the city and have a few contacts there.

Requirements

  • Relatively safe
  • Not too remote - for hospitals etc w/ a young child
  • A house / condo / decent apartment at a good cost
  • Possibility to hire assistance / nanny
  • As relatively low cost as possible
  • Reliable and as fast as possible internet access

I currently spend time mentor at some of the accelerators schemes in Australia - so Iโ€™ll be interested to also explore and network the startup / entrepreneur and nomad communities while I am there. As well as having potential conversations around hiring local staff, either as remote workers or if I come back to open up a business.

By way of a little background, I have a history in digital marketing, internet marketing startup consultancy, mentorship and business advisory services.

Based on the above - which location would you recommend that best fits the criteria? any recommendations on property rental? tips or advice for DCers on the ground?

Iโ€™m in BKK for DNX in a couple of weeks if anyone is attending and/or interested in meeting up for a coffee or talking further.

Cheers

Jon

What's the best location to incorporate an online business?

by @dmftaras 8yr 8 years ago  | 14 comments

Hey nomads,

Iโ€™m looking for the best location to incorporate my online business (offshore programming and so on).

The main requirements:

  • Low cost incorporation/yearly fee
  • Preferred with no audits (or other kind of paperwork)
  • With no local office/secretary/director needed
  • With low or 0% taxes
  • Easy to get paid from US/EU
  • Easy to send payments worldwide ( I can use Transferwise/Stripe or something like that, i donโ€™t care )
  • With corporate credit/debit cards

Iโ€™m only one owner of the company (not EU/US resident).
Iโ€™ve checked jurisdictions like BVI/Belize/Nevis and iโ€™m interested in it. It would be appreciated if you could give me some kind of advice, if you have experience with one of these jurisdictions.

My budget for incorporation < $1500

Thanks!

Anybody knows of good online banks for Europeans?

by @kfk 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Ok, I was just writing a PM here on banks and the question popped in my head. I am not a digital nomad, but I am very close to that way of living, in the sense that I donโ€™t want to commit to any specific physical location, long term investment (maybe only private pension), long term in general actually.

Now, I use Deutsche Bank. Nothing against them, but:

  • I hate to have an account manager that calls me telling me I should invest my money
  • The online banking is good but not great
  • Services are ok, but I donโ€™t use most of them and the one I would like (online everything please) are not there

So, I was wondering if any of you is happy with any of the digital banks out there? Criteria for a good online bank:

  • minimal paperwork
  • no account manager
  • 90% async communication (I call them, they call me only if the house is on fire)
  • they donโ€™t request a physical address and they DO NOT SEND PAPER STUFF to my mailbox

Anything like this?

Who is a solo-traveling digital nomad, who's traveling in a group or as a nomad family?

by @naii 9yr 9 years ago  | 25 comments

It feels that being a digital nomad / remote worker also means a lot to be a solo-traveler. Iโ€™d like to see how much this is the case here โ€” out of curiosity. And whether there are actually groups or families traveling in the (digital) nomad lifestyle.

Non-Personal alternative to maintaing a corporation for online business?

by @blueblueocean 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

So Iโ€™m finding if you have a small online business, maintaining a corporation in a country that has many rules is just a headache. Lots of forms to file and even if you use an accountant you have to bring them up to speed, give them documents and receipts, itโ€™s almost the same amount of workโ€ฆOn the other hand, you save some money and donโ€™t usually make pension contributions.

Has anyone found a solution thatโ€™s easier? Like giving the business to a friend or family member and they can wire you funds as an employee perhaps?

Are you a remote employee, freelancer or entrepreneur?

by @vincentnguyen 9yr 9 years ago  | 29 comments

Thereโ€™s a pretty good mix of nomads here. Itโ€™d be interesting to see if thereโ€™s a significant difference in terms of amounts of people belonging to certain camps.

Some are remote employees working for a specific company, others are freelancers who are picking up gigs here and there to fuel their travels, and the others are location independent entrepreneurs who are building businesses (however you may define it).

Which camp do you belong to? Do you belong in multiple groups? What does your past look like and were their transition periods?

I myself started out in the first group and transitioned into the third.

Where to do online shopping in Thailand?

in Thailand by @adrienbetweets 9yr 9 years ago  | 6 comments

Whatโ€™s up dreamers?

Do you have any recommendation on where to do online shopping in Thailand?

I just got an external screen & accessories from Lazada.co.th: the price was good & delivery of the screen (to Koh Lanta) took only 3 daysโ€ฆ! This was way beyond my expectations.

Any other tips (& shared experience) would be appreciated.

ps. created the same conversation on the DN Thailand facebook group if you prefer participating over there https://www.facebook.com/groups/1069582656437496/permalink/1075943859134709/

What's your online business as a nomad?

Iโ€™ve read so many articles, blogs and posts about โ€œhow to set up an online businessโ€, โ€œonline business tipsโ€ or โ€œbenefits of having an online business while you travelโ€ etcโ€ฆ

What I really want to know is what online businesses people actually have! As a noob nomad, enlighten me as to what you all actually do at your laptops while you travel! And why does this specific business fit into your lifestyle?
