Hamburg is a generally clean, safe, and orderly city with good public infrastructure. The city is spacious and calm, featuring plenty of green areas and a strong adherence to rules and regulations. Flight connections are excellent, and even the airport runs efficiently under pressure. Food is quite affordable, especially when compared to other countries, and summer activities around lakes and rivers can be pleasant. For basic day-to-day living, German language skills aren't essential, especially in the city center.

However, Hamburg isn't particularly social or nomad-friendly. The local culture can come across as cold, distant, or hard-headed, with residents often prioritizing rule-following over flexibility. This can make day-to-day interactions frustrating, especially when it comes to paperwork or situations outside the city center. Freedom of expression has reportedly declined in recent years, and the atmosphere during and post-COVID has discouraged some longer-term residents. While it might work for a short work assignment, it may not be ideal for long-term digital nomads or those seeking a warm social environment.

I’ve lived in Hamburg for 5 years until I left during COVID.

German Gründlichkeit has its upsides - things generally function well - but the cultural downside is that average people are rule followers to the T; they will literally police your trash, yell at you for jaywalking at night, and be especially hard headed when it comes to driving: not only once have I watched them yell at each other wasting everyone's time because they prioritize following rules over applying common sense or just basic decency.

That sentiment has only gotten worse with COVID and beyond; I eventually left because the long term perspective didn't seem too bright, and I'm sad to say that was the right bet.

That said, the city has many fabulous things to offer (good weather is not one of them :) ). It's exceptionally green and very clean and orderly, depending on the area; people can be cold, distant and lack basic humor - and then there are other areas where it's quite the opposite.

Hamburg definitely has its own unique vibe and way of life.

Not sure it's great for nomads.

Been living here for 6-months. Not the most sociable place, people are a bit avoidant. Apparently a 'Northern' thing. On a good note not very windy.
Food is pretty cheap as In Germany in general. Summers are quite nice to spend around some lakes and river beaches.

Flight connections are amazing. Also airport functions even with staff shortages, not overcrowded.

You can get around without German language that's for sure. On a very basic level.

But having a conversation or dealing with paperwork outside of city-center can be tricky.

Crime is very low. There is a large party area. Some pretty fun clubs.

Probably for a nomad I would not recommend. A bit snobby/cold.

But for a short-term work-stop is okay.

Spacious and calm overall.

Lived in Hamburg for 12 years. Nice place, but on the brink on turning in a bad direction since around spring 2020. Freedom of speech and freedom are in decline.
