how hard is appartment hunting in medellin? Im now in asuncion and its really bad, they usually only do 12 months deals foreigners/nomads are often required to pay the full lease upfront. Is it like that in columbia as well or is it more relaxed?
markus 3mo
I know someone who has many monthly rentals. Many AirBnBs are open to direct deals as well
It's not hard. Medellin is offering a lot of places for reasonable price. I would recommend Laureles for safe, calm and affordable environment with a lot of great places. Poblado is not as good as it used to be but still it's one of the safe districts. I am sure you will find a nice place that you feel comfortable.
gigabee 3mo
Asuncion Paraguay?
Yes
Who wants to come to a Karaoke bar this Friday for Halloween ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽƒ (Medellin)

Currently got 14 people confirmed (expecting ~20 people)... Just DM me so I can add you to the group chat.
jermane 3mo
Just DM you.
blaise 3mo
Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹
Iโ€™m Blazej, currently in Medellรญn, at least until December. Iโ€™d love to grab a coffee and meet some fellow nomads.

Iโ€™m into outdoor sports and hiking. Always up for mountain trips if anyoneโ€™s planning something! Also happy to join padel games (still a beginner though ๐Ÿ˜…).

PS. I just proposed a Nomad List meetup on Saturday: https://nomads.com/meetups#62acb8dbf916acfcd38456e4ecf19e58
jermane 3mo
Hey everybody, I am a digital nomad and entrepreneur and I'll be living in Medellin for a month or two. Let me know if you want to link up for some drinks or hit the gym.
markus 3mo
Hey, I had a look at your LinkedIn. Super interesting what you do in B2B.
I found a unique way to refer business through leads in Slack communities like Randโ€™s leadership (for engineering leaders) and Lennyโ€™s Newsletter Slack (for product managers).

When do you arrive? I hope to be back in a few weeks.
markus 3mo
Hey, there are quite a few hiking groups on WhatsApp e.g. on mdecommunity.com
blaise 3mo
Ah, yes. I signed up for the paid and self-organized hiking group via mdecommunity.com but itโ€™s been a week and my request for the self-organized group is still pending approval ๐Ÿ™„ Is that group active or pretty much dead?
markus 3mo
Great question! That group was often full due to WhatsApp limits. There are many other hiking groups. I will DM you.
jermane 3mo
I'm here in Medellin now.
clemgo 3mo
Hey everyone ! Weโ€™re a small group of friends currently in Medellรญn and wondering if there are any regular meetups or communities around. Meetup app doesnโ€™t seem very active here.

Weโ€™re staying in Poblado, but aside from the red-light vibe and some questionable gringo energy, weโ€™re not totally convinced by the area yet
paul040 3mo
If youre not convinced with poblado, i doubt you'll find something you like tbh ๐Ÿ˜
paul040 3mo
But everyone's different
paul040 3mo
Most of what i've seen is "cool, but i'm not sure if i'd want to live here"
My favorite activity for meeting new people has been the Language exchanges... There's many Colombians, and Nomads in those events!!
Also depends on the types of people you want to meet... If you're ok meeting A LOT of tourists

Considerer creating a deal with a tour guide you like:

Ex: Soccer Match tour guide, Horse riding tour guide, Communa 13 tour guide...

Get them to agree to discounted rates, and agree to become a regular customer for them...

EX: every week, you can go to a soccer match.... with a guide... that brings 10 new people you can meet... doing something you enjoy... at discounted rates
I went to a language exchange this past Tuesday called gringo tuesdays and it was awesome!!
Hey
I m planning to visit Medellin next month
Any tips or ideas abt the accommodation? Which area are best for digital nomad ? Intresting coworking?
Jo guys, I am flying out to Barranquilla today. Is anyone of you right now there and would like to co work or grab a drink? Or does anyone have good connections for WhatsApp communities around that area, would be neat. Just DM me. :)
edudeleon 2mo
Is there anything going on in Bogotรก? I've been to Medellin couple of times before the pandemic and it was cool but curious about Bogota. My other other option is Mexico City which is a safe bet, good cafes, lots of activifes, nice walking areaa, etc.
naser88 2mo
We were just in Bogotรก and really enjoyed it. Underrated

https://youtu.be/opsAnSe9j7M?si=N-DSye5LjYVg3PXc
markus 2mo
Are you still in Poblado? I move back to Medellin on Monday. I like Laureles much more and looking for an apartment there but Poblado has nice spots. I know tons of events in Poblado and Laureles. The language exchange at Black Flora had some nice locals when I was there earlier this year. I have to check my list for regular events in Poblado.

Hey everyone, the weather looks terrible. Iโ€™m considering cancelling my flight from Cancun to Medellรญn tomorrow, the 26th. Is it still worth heading over despite the rain across this part of South America?
The weather forecast is misleading. It is raining a lot but usually intensely for an hour or two then clears up.
Hola! Anyone staying or has stayed in Bogotรก for long-term, mlre than 3months? I'd like to have some intel, for rent, where is best to live, where to eat and all. Gracias !
markus 2mo
Hola, Scroll up a few posts and there is a video from someone who stayed in Bogotรก for 3 months.
I only stayed in Bogotรก for a few days but my buddy lived there for years and recommended El Chapinero. I really liked it. Bogotรก is cold, has a lot of traffic, is polluted and the people tend to be much more closed up than in the rest of Colombia.
Colombians say that restaurants are better in Bogotรก than in Medellin but I still have to find these. A Chinese expat just recommended Bao to me for authentic Chinese food.
markus 2mo
Hey, Did you make it here? Weather has been perfect for the last few days since I moved back to Medellin :)
brigadirk 2mo
I have spent quite a bit of time there and the guy who made the video did a great job.
Ah good to hear. For now Iโ€™m in Merida for another week and will head to Medellin next week.
Did you find any?
Hey guys Richard Taty here im Bogota anyone available this weekend to hangout?
emdottie 2mo
Hey everyone, Iโ€™m planning on returning to MDE in February. I came across this platform called nomadbarrio for rentals, has anyone used this service before? Trying to make sure itโ€™s legit before signing up.
markus 2mo
Hey, I know the guy who started it. Itโ€™s legit ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not at the time, but it seems there's a new one now

anyone in Medellin January 21-27? I'm staying en Colores north of Laureles
markus 1mo
Whatโ€™s a good coworking in Laureles or closeby which is quiet and has a good community? Preferably more locals.
markus 1mo
I really enjoyed Bwork in Bali during Covid

When were you there? A Google reviewer was there 4 months ago and told by the security that it doesn't exist anymore
faun 1mo
I was there last year.
More locals? Difficult, Laureles is 90% foreigners

Hey guys. I wanted to asked you fellow nomads who live in Colombia, especially Medellin and Bogota how is it life there? Is really dangerous, that you can be robbed and that you can be cautious, and what are your experience with dating Colombian girls? I heard a lot of things they will drug you and robb you and all of things bs. I start my nomad journey with Bali in february and plan to go to Da Nang and Chiang Mai later, but I am interested is it safe for digital nomads in Medellin and in Colombia in general? Because in Asia that is something that is big plus, it is generaly safe.
Btw dude is very dangerous, especially if you deal with local girls. When I lived in hostel, crimes occurred every day. On the photo case when a guy was scopolamined and robbed.
Colombia is safe if you take the necessary precautions.
Watch your drinking. Don't use dating apps. Be suspicious of women who seem too keen.

If your gut tells you something is off, then don't do it.
I am in Medellรญn and seems really safe. Just be careful much like anywhere else.
paul040 1mo
Also felt mostly very safe when i was there
paul040 1mo
I also engaged with lots of girls, and nothing bad happened. Strange things happen though, and if you're careful you will know when something's off
stef2710 1mo
Iโ€™ve been in Medellin for 3 months, be careful with who you engage with, especially women but overall it's safe if you take the right precautions
Like others say, robberies and scams do happen and they can happen to you too, but if you're careful, you can minimize the risk and you'll most probably be fine.
I love Medellรญn, but the truth is you need to stay alert and watch your back at all times. For example, don't work on your laptop at a cafรฉ terrace that's easily accessible from the street. Thieves on motorbikes can just snatch it and speed off before you even react. I saw this happen in Laureles in day light.
Don't get too drunk when partying. Just don't.
Dating: yes, it can be risky, but I've personally only had good experiences, both from apps and meeting girls in clubs. Maybe I got lucky, who knows.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned much: never open your door to strangers who ring your bell, no matter what they say (the landlord sent them, etc.). This is unfortunately the scam I fell for. Stupid in hindsight, but they caught me completely off guard.
Colombia is amazing but requires a different level of awareness than Southeast Asia. Stay smart and you'll have a great time.
theproper 1mo
So what happened when you opened the door? Thanks for the info btw, I second all of that.
brigadirk 1mo
Make sure to use taxi apps and don't get into random taxis. For the most part, Colombia is safe except for certain parts in certain cities, probably especially Medellin. You could go to the countryside and it will be completely safe.
markus 1mo
It feels really safe here in Medellin but it isnโ€™t ๐Ÿคฃ Especially at night or before dawn but you can use Uber
markus 1mo
Yes, Uber is safer than other taxi apps and still super cheap.
markus 1mo
I just read something interesting from my foreign landlord: When walking, always walk against traffic. Most robberies occur from behind.
When using ur cell on street, step away from street before taking out your cell.
nenadboka 1mo
To be honest with you guys all of this doesn't sound like good life, I need to be always alert and watch my back like I am some most wanted criminal always watch around my shoulde. So they're a big cons. If all of this is true why you choose Medellin? What is your main Pros? Girls? Or you are there for food and culture?๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Hahahaah.. And how you navigate dating to avoid scaming? I understand that you avoid apps and tinder, but realisticaly you never know if it is easy is it scam or she is really into you?
oxyc 1mo
after 10 years in latam i still struggle with the mentality to be careful :D i dont want to be. at least being aware comes naturally
markus 1mo
True. You donโ€™t have to be always careful especially in Laureles during the day.
Have the laptop in a backpack. Donโ€™t wear jewelry, donโ€™t wear a a watch, be aware of risk if you use an expensive DSLR, donโ€™t wear flashy clothes or t-shirt from Bitcoin conference ๐Ÿคฃ
markus 1mo
True, Nenad.
Laureles is super livable. Top 1 or 2 in the world. I have lived in many nomad hotspots.

People look very happy, are very present (look you in the eyes when talking) and are embodied. Very touchy culture.
Itโ€™s super green and walkable. Perfect weather most of the year. It feels very local in most places in Laureles.
Great events from meditation events to ecstatic dance.

Easy to get into nature for half a day up to a weekend.

Colombia is super diverse in so many ways. Medellin is a great base!
markus 1mo
Serendipity of running into friends, old dates, etc. in Laureles๐Ÿคฃ while being able to talk to anyone like Uber drivers makes me feel at home. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
I meet many like-minded Colombians.
A few days ago I ran into a local friend I hadnโ€™t seen since moving back a few weeks ago and his Japanese wife. He is building and selling an apartment building with units for nomads.

Feel free to reach out if you are in Medellin are interested in Medellin!!

I easily join a group convo in Spanish (they talked slower because they have foreign partners). People speak clear Spanish.

A few days ago I went to a somatic dance event and the owner of Somatic Saigon, a place I hadnโ€™t even known despite the gallery I always passed by, happened to be a wonderful American woman I met at a real estate event a year ago where I had also met the local above ๐Ÿคฃ
jojo23 1mo
Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹ Iโ€™ll be in Medellin in January and thinking of doing a few days in Cartagena.

Any recommendations for coliving (more on the nicer/older crowd with cowork, not party)?
brigadirk 1mo
It doesn't sound good because it's a conversation specifically about dangers. It's like reading the news and concluding that the world is horrible. In reality you take a handful of precautions and use common sense and you spend 99,9% of your time not thinking about any of it while you enjoy a beautiful country and culture.
paul040 1mo
This. I had a GREAT time in medellin and never felt unsafe
paul040 1mo
I always remind myself that there's millions of people living in these cities day after day and for the absolute majority, nothing ever happens
paul040 1mo
It's like watching the news about plane crashes, and then watching skytracker and seeing thousands of planes safely landing every minute of the day all around the world. It skews your perception
keshev 30d
what's up everybody. I'm new here. Gonna be in Medellin and Cartagena in Feb
keshev 30d
anybody gonna be around?
rcsligar 30d
Nice to hear you had a positive experience, I wanted to share some about mine. My favorite visit to Medellin was my first in 2019. People were really excited to meet a foreigner and always wanted to practice English. A warm environment that was very inviting. I went to the skatepark most days and had a lot of fun at Parque Arvi among other things.

But it seemed like each year I went, I liked it less. After covid, there was a huge influx of undesirables that came, to the point where โ€œno to the sex tourist,โ€ placards were posted in front of restaurants I used to eat at. I noticed people started having a more negative attitude towards foreigners, and laureles was fast on the route towards major gentrification during my last visit (Jan 2024).

I also learned more about the โ€œno dar papayaโ€ concept, basically meaning that you shouldnโ€™t give people any leeway to take advantage of you, and after getting the โ€œgringo priceโ€ several times not just in Medellin but other parts of Colombia, I started having a sour taste, and left after a few months.

Colombia is a beautiful country with a lot of neat ecotourism activities, but itโ€™s not at the top of my list right now because of the changes that have taken place. Just wanted to share my thoughts on that.
sinclair 30d
woah this is such a cool telegram
How you guys are celebrating NYE?
Any recommendations for where/ how to celebrate NYE in Medellรญn?or should we create a meetup ?
Hi guys, who else is going to Bitcoin Medellin now in January?
markus 20d
It wasnโ€™t so great last year so I doubt that I will go again
maristia 15d
Anyone in Bucaramanga (or Santander) at the moment, or haven been recently?
markus 14d
I was there for a few days a year ago.
What's the question?
maristia 11d
What were your thoughts about it? Considering it to spend a few weeks or a month in April or so
maristia 11d
What are your thoughts about it?
that's sad to hear
out of curiosity what would be at the top of your list right now and why?
markus 11d
I really liked it. Good weather, nice people, walkable. Much easier to find an apartment than in Medellin.
The nature around the city is beautiful.

That said absolutely limited food options and really boring.
maristia 11d
Food is boring or the whole city ?
markus 11d
bump
markus 11d
There is nothing going on in the city besides nightlife.
xcesco 9d
Hi! Did you find something that match this? I'm also very interested for February / March
markus 9d
Colombia increased minimum salary by 23% from January so prices go up a lot
