Hey all, about to book a trip to Tulum. I know Tulum gets mixed reviews but planning to give it a shot. Looking to stay in Aldea Zama and use the coworking spaces in town. May bounce over to PDC if it does become problematic. Will bring a backup laptop battery and 5G hotspot for backup internet. Anyone have recommendations/advice? Is the negativity overblown?

I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

I've personally avoided Tulum as ive been told its full of influencers and NPCs. I personally prefer to find like minded people to connect with, so its not to say there aren't great people over there, but im still to have met someone who has spent time there and would genuinely recommend it over other parts of México, especially considering more bang for your buck vs the quality you receive.

Either way, if you like it, win. If you dont, you have Bacalar, PDC and Merida to explore

The majority is safer than most US cities. I’ve lived here for half a year approximately and have had zero issues. In fact I’ve had zero issues in ALL my México travel

Well in SE asia like in Thailand and Vietnam you can walk around late at night alone pretty much knowing nothing will happen. I dont feel like that can be done as safely in Mexico. Those countries are safer than mexico imo (and the cost of living is half what it costs in Mexico for the same lifestyle). That being said, i regard roma norte and Roma sur in México city to be very safe

I live in Mexico City, at the southern tip of what that "hood map" called "Hipster mecca". I've been here since 2022. In my experience, it is very safe. Never once have I seen anything, even when I'm out at 2am or 3am, that has concerned me or looked suspicious.

Hey everyone, I’m landing in Cancún tonight but don’t plan to stay there. I’m looking for a calm, walkable base for 2–3 weeks before I head to Medellín in mid-December.

My main goals are: focused work (I’m a fractional CTO building new clients), learning Spanish in an immersive way, joining dance classes, going to the gym, and building a simple daily routine. Not interested in partying or heavy tourism. Mostly looking for a warm, grounded community, even for a short stay.

Does Mérida still make sense for this, or would you recommend somewhere like Valladolid instead?

Yes, Merida makes sense if you are talking ‘walkable’ after dark lol If you are accustomed to the heat you’ll be fine.

This place might still have networking events, they did when I patroned the place. The people are friendly and it’s a great place to feel productive.
For data security & privacy, they have a flat network. You’ll have to configure your own for security then connect to theirs…but that’s anywhere you go 🤷🏽‍♀️ Just a fair warning. Enjoy

Has anyone been able to set up a bank account in Mexico without having a “residency permit” (temporary or permanent) or visa? Based on what I read it’s not possible, however, I’m curious if anyone has seen anything else. Even neobanks like “Plata” and “Nubank” don’t seem to make it any easier for tourists.

Hey! I stayed at Pato de Perro in January. No complaints and it didn’t feel like a party hostel, but I was there during the week so I am not sure if that changes on the weekend.

You can't purchase Nyquil in Mexico. Air quality in CDMX is bad in the Winter. Hard to find a gym that has a sauna (or a properly working sauna). Was this weird and random enough? BTW, I am a software engineer as well.

Learned Spanish and Portuguese with the app called Tandem.

Check it out. You can connect with locals where ever you go to exchange language and help each other to learn. I’ve done it successfully multiple times and made good friends at the same time..

I recommend you to switch to listening only Spanish music, watching TV shows in Spanish (with English subtitles for the start) then use tandem. Just throw yourself into the language as much as you can. At the beginning you won’t understand anything but if you have patience and push through you’ll start picking up a lot quite fast. Then you can still do a traditional language course / classes on the side or just use AI as a teacher 🤖

Most importantly never be afraid to speak and make mistakes. That’s how you learn the fastest ;) good luck!
