Just spent a month there. Apartments are a mixed bag. Nanshan (Talent Park station) and Shekou are the most livable hoods. Anywhere near the water/cycle path is ideal. OCT Loft area nice as well. Didi is cheap and plentiful so no need to be right next to a station. There's a 30 minute ferry to HK airport from Shekou with literally zero people at customs so it's easy for foreigners to fly in and out without ever going to HK. Bao'an airport 30 min taxi from Shekou/Nanshan as well.

Loads of cheap 30-50$ options on trip dot com. Obviously totally depends on which city and which district. I find trip dot com by far the best site for booking all sorts of things in China, including plane and train tickets.

Shenzhen. Lots of good apartments for rent on Trip.com. Book for a week via trip then negotiate offline with the host, they'll usually cut you a deal. Not sure what visa you have but easy to pop over to HK when you need to 'reset' it...

Shit seems to change every month. Just load up on data with an Esim and you're fine. Tether your computer to your phone. I used Shadowfly for the past two months and it was pretty much fine (would go down now and then) but esims always worked

Like last week I was told by Vienna classic hotel that I was a security risk n they couldn’t check me in (think this was just an excuse for saying they don’t know how to register foreigners properly).

Ill find out, I think could be 6 months, maybe a year. Cheap enough to walk away and lose your deposit. Border runs to Hong kong if you only have 30 day visa entry. Ill try and gather some contacts.

Yeah meituan apartments are not really meant for foreigners but sometimes you get lucky. Technically they are required to but a lot don't bother. One time a local just handed me the police registration app and had me fill it out for them. I think they couldn't read my passport (not that I could read the Chinese app). The major issue for long term nomading in China is that there is not an Airbnb equivalent with vetted, honest reviews. Local Airbnb not useful and trip/booking are a mixed bag...

I can’t get past the WiFi / firewall. Have to rely on hotspot, are there any true unlimited eSIMs? Feel like they always cap at 50 of 100gb. I end up going through $50-$100 in eSIMs when in China

I use 3hk sim...just top up when I run low. Never bother with VPN or wifi. It's $$ but no issues ever

As much as I hate the slow connectivity in China, god it’s so perfect in every other aspect. I would pay $100+ a month if I had super fast unlimited internet. But even the eSIMs are slower than WiFi in most Asian countries.

Now that I left it sucks. Forgot now I need to bring my wallet everywhere and get cash. Every Thai atm is $7.50 fee, so basically 1-2%, then no 2% cash back credit card and I’m losing out on 4%+ in long run being here smh
