Hello! I'm a digital nomad and will be living in China for one month; Iโ€™d appreciate VPN recommendations that reliably provide full access not only to chat apps but also to Amazon Web Services (AWS), GitHub, and other developer tools and services.
LetsVPN

V1VPN worked great for me.

Hi, I'm planning on going to China for a few months starting in January for February and possibly doing remote work while I am there (through a foreign company, potentially my own American company if it starts up successfully). Does anyone have info on how this works in terms of legal logistics like visas?
khizrs 13d
I went to China recently, lets vpn worked almost all of the time, but I also used mullvad sometimes when lets was slow.
khizrs 13d
you need to floow the instructions here https://mullvad.net/en/help/connecting-to-mullvad-vpn-from-restrictive-locations
I use PureVPN and it works like a charm.

Yo I'm in Shanghai and can meet for coffee/lunch on weekdays if anyone passes by this city, hit me up
Thanks for the VPN recommendations. Perhaps I should've clarified I was more so referring to what type of visa I'd need without running into legal troubles in China like being fined or detained. Unsure about the extent to which the government would care
khizrs 12d
ah my reply was for a few messages above yours
Ohh haha my bad
khizrs 12d
are you planning to open a business in china or work for chinese companies?
Nah just do remote work for an American company
khizrs 12d
which passport do you have?
American
khizrs 12d
just get a tourist visa
khizrs 12d
you will get 10 year multi entry
Yeah I've got that already
khizrs 12d
oh then no problem then
khizrs 12d
fined or detained is only if you plan to destablise the government, work for chinese companies illegally or similar
Gotcha don't get me wrong I trust that you're being honest with me and have good intentions in mind but it would feel more reassuring to see a policy outlined like this from a firsthand official source haha, do you happen to have any links to pages that talk about this more?
khizrs 12d
What you're suggesting is a massive grey area that few countries clarify in writing.
khizrs 12d
Have you been doing simialr in other countries?
khizrs 12d
or is this your first time working online?
I haven't actually started the digital nomad lifestyle yet, so this would be my first time
khizrs 12d
ah dont worry then
I've been to China multiple times before, but solely for travel
khizrs 12d
I cant think of many countries that outline their position on digital nomdas working remotely on tourist/visa free
khizrs 12d
the main concern is your arent taking any jobs away from locals
I've worked online as a consultant in the U.S., but never officially been employed for an online position
That's good to know
I actually collaborated in-person with some companies in China for some one-off events and they gave my ex-girlfriend the money since she's Chinese. Not with her anymore though so gonna have to find other ways around that if I continue doing things like that...
That's definitely a base I'd like to cover ahead of time as well in case those types of opportunities present themselves. We did "oral contracts" because we knew each other, and money was given in the form of cash. Unsure if that's actually usable though without converting to digital currency since most places just use wechat/alipay
So if I'm making that cash, I'd be okay with spending it while in China so I don't have to declare it when leaving (at least for my first go at this), but if I transfer it to my card that's something that can be monitored, which is what I'd be concerned about
khizrs 12d
I think you're being a bit paranoid.
khizrs 12d
With the cash thing they dont care about that unless its thousands of dollars
khizrs 12d
but by the sounds of it you're looking to go and work for/with chinese companies
it's two separate things
remote work for my own company, and in-person collaborations with chinese companies
khizrs 12d
the remote work for your own company is no issue
khizrs 12d
in person collaborations is something else, it will depend on what you're doing and I have no idea about it
khizrs 12d
ususally visas allow you to go for business reasons, meetings etc
in case it ends up being thousands of dollars though, to what extent would they care/take legal action?
Rubik's Cube teaching lessons, so nothing super serious but since schools are state-owned idk
khizrs 12d
i think 10k usd is usually the amount of cash that needs to be declared when crossing a border
khizrs 12d
yeah this is paid work
khizrs 12d
you gotta find out what to do about it
So I just declare it and nothing else happens? Or does that raise alarm bells by them and have them look further into it
khizrs 12d
they may want to know the source of funds
khizrs 12d
its to prevent money laundering usually
khizrs 12d
if you have less you dont need to declare
khizrs 12d
but check the regulations in china it may be different
yeah the only thing I can think of right now is to have the money be going not to my account but rather a person with a work visa/citizen of China that I trust and then either use when doing stuff together or have them transfer to me when I'm outside the country
will do ๐Ÿ‘Œ
khizrs 12d
I think its hard to move money out of the country in china without a reason
mmm yeah probably
Would you expect this to necessitate a Z (work) visa, or would an M (commercial trade) visa suffice?
Since I wouldn't actually be getting hired, but rather being a guest at events and stuff
rgaaiugnhbkcevnver china is definitely a ymmv (your mileage may vary) country - every person and every institution and even every province has different understanding of the rules and they vary how they enforce them. I've heard stories of foreigners being denied renewals of their visas in beijing and taking the train several hours north to another province and getting approved. technically speaking, if you're receiving a salary, you must have a work visa. if you're tutoring on the side or doing one-off events, receiving money with a business / tourist visa might be a gray area. I know that specifically in the case of foreigners coming in with a toruist visa and doing english tutoring there was a crackdown a few years ago - the trouble with an autocratic nation is that the rules are whatever is enforced ๐Ÿคท
sorry that doesn't give more clarity - but I think JTB is correct in that if you don't move large amounts of money it's unlikely anyone will care too much
Thanks for clarifying, much appreciated!
You canโ€™t renew a visa within China. You have to do it at the Chinese consulate or embassy of your home country
I'm organizing a Shenzhen Tech Tour (Nov 14-20) taking you to explore the Silicon Valley of China!
