Does anyone have info on how this works in terms of legal logistics like visas?

yeah the only thing I can think of right now is to have the money be going not to my account but rather a person with a work visa/citizen of China that I trust and then either use when doing stuff together or have them transfer to me when I'm outside the country

rgaaiugnhbkcevnver china is definitely a ymmv (your mileage may vary) country - every person and every institution and even every province has different understanding of the rules and they vary how they enforce them. I've heard stories of foreigners being denied renewals of their visas in beijing and taking the train several hours north to another province and getting approved. technically speaking, if you're receiving a salary, you must have a work visa. if you're tutoring on the side or doing one-off events, receiving money with a business / tourist visa might be a gray area. I know that specifically in the case of foreigners coming in with a toruist visa and doing english tutoring there was a crackdown a few years ago - the trouble with an autocratic nation is that the rules are whatever is enforced 🤷

You can’t renew a visa within China. You have to do it at the Chinese consulate or embassy of your home country
