I also think Thailand is a place absolutely overrun by tourists. To me it seemed all is build to cater tourists. In Vietnam you can find this a lot too but it has still much more authenticity which I liked a lot.

(I’m comparing it overall in my experience. I personally LOVED Chiang Mai in Thailand, but very much disliked the experience on the islands)

The stay was good, my first tip is to go to this cafe called reality, they have so many event everyday at everytime and you make good connections there. They do like 3 events simultaneouksy everyday everytime so you will find something for u for sure

I cannot understand why you would want to stay next to Bui Vien, as someone living here for a year. Bui Vien is the walking/drinking street in TP.HCM and will blast out your eardrums. It is nowhere near the volume levels of the red lights in Bangkok. It's also about as peak tourist area as one can find in the city, so sky high price is to be expected as Vietnam is currently having a huge tourism boom

Prices are still quite reasonable a much farther distance away from D1

I'm not sure Vietnam truly has a peak season right now, it's more like peak year. Agoda is usually your friend in this part of Asia. Just don't AirBNB unless you're planning on staying at least 30 days. What is available is just what's available for that part.

If you have some flexibility there is also a rail system under construction, with one line solidly active, and the busses are pretty modern with Vingroup electrifying them. Grab is also quite cheap compared to other locations like Thailand, and significantly less scary speeds with helmets required by law. Significant walking is pretty rare as a primary form of transportation right now, but the city is trying to change that slowly
