I've never heard of someone getting it, and if you do it's highly unlikely you'll die even if untreated. For me it wasn't worth getting.

I wanted to do that but turns out the shot is only effective 3-4 weeks later so pretty much when I’ll leave haha

you'll be fine i stayed over 12months and didnt get or see a case, if ur worried just avoid the jungles etc

How often would such a shot be recommended? I'm planning on VN being something of a home base even if I have to keep border running or leaving an apartment mostly empty for a few months at a time. I haven't heard of this vaccine but I also have cardiac issues so I like to play it safe.

Did it two weeks ago. We were only on the loop for 2 days (came from Cao Bang), but they still got us. They asked 3mil per motorbike but I got it down to 2 (I made sure to have just the 2 in my wallet since I heard that was the going rate at the moment)

They showed me some law book where it said it they can ask between 2 and 4

They only fine you once in the Ha Giang province. They take a picture of you as proof, drop it in a WhatsApp chat and if you get stopped again, you need to tell them you're in the chat already 😁

They make a big deal out of it when they stop you, e.g. they threatened to take my bike, but I haven't heard of them actually doing that

After a month in Thailand and 2 weeks Vietnam (so far) I would agree with that statement.

I’d like to know more. I spent a couple months in Bangkok and looking to move to Saigon or da nang for a while.

I've never been to Thailand but I'm a fan of Vietnam's personality. The language is like trying to weather a storm, EQ can be low, and your experience in/out of tourist areas will vary greatly, but I'm down for a good challenge.

Depending on the region of VN you choose, the dialect can be pretty different. I went on a road trip with an old friend from HCMC and the dialect in Da Nang was frequently a bit of a challenge. Textbooks will generally teach you to Ha Noi dialect

Lived in both: TH, and Vietnam, presently. I love Thailand, and it's improved dramatically over the last 10 years. World class amenities, they win there, but my preference for living is Vietnam.

Weather's pretty similar between BKK/ Saigon, but BKK does get more humid.

I'm based in Saigon. Very easy to establish a day-to-day routine, and get stuff done.

While I love the BTS, reality is - I don't have much of a need to commute. I work from home. I prefer the convenience of hopping in a Grab.

You can get to most parts of Saigon in 12-30 minutes max by Grab. It's easy.

This makes socializing, building a friend network and community far easier. I often see friends of mine 3-4 times a week. It makes getting together easy. Meeting up ad hoc is also easier. There's a large, active friend group.

Living in BKK is like living in LA. You have to plan ahead to meet people. Feels more isolating to me.

Most people I know just do visa runs every three months. No issue, can do indefiitely. Others that are long term, either setup local companies about $2500 bucks or get an investment visa.

More of an annoying drizzle. But it can be days with no sun and also can get quite cold (<20)
